Arlington Cemetery. A moving place of meditation where JFK's grave is located.
Nicole Jorquera
It's gigantic!!!! You have to go with a lot of desire to walk because it is tremendous. It is a special place.
Marcel Campos
Incredible place to visit.
Thanks! Your review is awaiting moderation.
There are guidelines but also PLENTY of political exceptions.
every half hour in the summer and every hour in the winter
No, there is not. We would recommend you check with your hotel, or if you're taking the metro, see if any of the metro stations you're traveling via have luggage lockers.
In 1901, Confederate soldiers buried at the Soldiers' Home and various locations within Arlington were reinterred in a Confederate section that was authorized by Congress in 1900. On June 4, 1914, the United Daughters of the Confederacy dedicated the Confederate Memorial designed by Moses Ezekiel. Upon his death in 1917, Ezekiel was buried at the base of the monument as he was a veteran of the Confederate army.[83] All Confederate headstones in this section are peaked rather than rounded.[84] More than 3,800 former slaves, called "Contrabands" during the Civil War, are buried in Section 27. Their headstones are designated with the word "Civilian" or "Citizen".[85]
Mike, you must call them directly!
Within the military, there is a tradition that leaving coins on headstones of deceased service members is a way of showing respect. Different coins mean different things. A penny means you know someone who was associated with the deceased (relative). A nickel means they trained with the deceased. A dime says they served with the deceased. A quarter means they were present or assigned with the deceased when they lost their life. The tradition of leaving coins is not limited to the military; it has become a way for anyone to show that they were thinking of someone, which is why you will see coins left on graves of non-military members as well. Stones or rocks are left on headstone to indicate the same. It is believed to have originated as a Jewish custom and indicates respect for the dead.
No permission needed - go for it!
There is also an App for finding locations which features a moving map to guide you. See you app store depending on you device.
An you Drive in your own car if I am 97 and cannot walk any distance?
Hi Carl - there is no required dress code for funeral services. Most people wear business-casual outfits or what is commonly referred to as "church clothes." Uniformed service members typically wear their service uniform.
A ) Oswald is buried outside Dallas in an unmarked grave... Robert Francis Kennedy is to the left of his brother John Fitzgerald Kennedy on the hill of the Lee Mansion
I asked the same thing, and they said that all roads in the cemetery are accessible.
Use the Memorial Avenue gate for parking. Follow the parking officers directions to the designated parking areas for the general public. There are several different parking areas and it can get confusing, particularly when it's busy.
Use google maps to figure out what buses run to the cemetery.
You can leave a coin in most places though there are some gravesites that specifically advise you to not place or throw coins
Did you mean John Key?
Sorry for your loss! There is an app for smart phones, or you can look on their website.
Yes you can walk through or take the tour bus to the 3 main parts. My family has a forever pass that we can drive through the entire cemetery due to my great grandfather being buried there. You can't drive your personal vehicle unless a family member is buried there.
If it is someone you know or family. Flowers. But if you dont personally know him or her ask at the desk. The ladies are more than helpful. If you have family you can take the free shuttle bus to where they are at. My dad is in the columbarium. Wall. I put a poppy. Everything about it is stunning. Very well kept. Enjoy your time. And remember the fallen.
Yes, blue line Arlington national cemetery stop.
(Please forgive our Italian - we are using Google Translate) No, there is no luggage storage area. If you are taking the metro, please check at another station, or inquire at the hotel.
There are more than 400 MOH recipients laid to rest at ANC. Check out our website for more information: https://www.arlingtoncemetery.mil/Explore/Notable-Graves/Medal-of-Honor-Recipients
Arlington National Cemetery is the final resting place for over 400,000 veterans and their eligible dependents.
If you search up Arlington National Cemetery there is a “Find a Grave” button that will direct you. There is also an app! Good luck :)
All flags are removed after Memorial Day before the cemetery reopens to the Public.

https://www.arlingtoncemetery.mil/Funeral-Information/After-the-Funeral/Vehicle-Passes
Once you come through the main entrance of the cemetary, through security of the building, the staff can tell you where the grave registry is. I think people get thrown off because it's Arlington, it's the same marker system as any other Veterans Administration cemetary.....hope this helped!
You will have to check with the cemetery to find out where this person is buried.
Yes you can and blessed be 😂
We only saw people walking. It's a respect issue - there are also park employees that will yell at you if you sit in certain areas (on the steps at the memorials for ex).
Business professional in conservative colors, preferably dark suit and tie. Or, service uniform identified by branch as appropriate for funeral and internment services/ceremony.
Yes that's the home at the top of the hill overlooking the cemetery.
I would use Google maps to locate hotels near the cemetery. :)
C A L L Yes. Call for Information. Spouse will be bury on the Backside of Headstone. Call for Details
It's open, I was there today 1-19-19 (also watched the changing of the Guard)
Hi Mary - It is very common for families and loved ones to hire a florist to deliver flowers or a wreath to a specific grave at the cemetery. Unfortunately, we’re unable to provide any recommendations for florists as they are non-government commercial entities – but there are several within the immediate area who offer this service and are familiar with the property. A quick internet search should find you several options.
Hi Doug - there are several cemeteries across the country (and world) with memorials for military working dogs. There is one in Guam that is named the National War Dog Cemetery.

Hi James - if you are visiting a grave and do not have a family pass, you can request one when you arrive. Simply let the gate guard know you need to get a temporary pass, and they will tell you where to park while you go into the Welcome Center to get one. Alternately, you can request the graveside shuttle take you to and from the grave you're visiting.
Yes there is bus parking
You can walk thru the whole cemetery.
Hi Ralph. Call up there. I have never heard about the paperwork. If your attendance is with the procession it should be fine. But I would call the number first. There is always someone there to answer your questions. We did not have special paperwork for my dad. He is also buried there
We are open 365 days a year. From April-September, we are open from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. From October-March, we are open 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
I think its west my uncle is buried in there
They began interring Federal dead on the grounds of Robert E. Lee's plantation, named Arlington, that he had inherited from his wife, who descended from Martha Washington and her first husband. The Federal government perceived this as a way to punish Lee for siding with the Confederacy, after being offered command of the Union army and turning it down. So graves first found a place at Arlington about 1862 or 63, during the opening years of the Civil War.
Hi Courtney - the process to schedule a burial at Arlington National Cemetery can be complex and we handle each family's request individually with the utmost care and professionalism. Each request is unique and the length of time it takes for scheduling is typically several weeks to several months and depends on many factors, including the family's ability to provide all documents to verify eligibility, any special requests, requests for full military honors (which can take take longer to schedule than standard military honors because of additional military resources such as escorts and the caisson), requests for one of the chapels located on Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, etc. When an eligible next of kin calls to schedule a service, the cemetery representative they work with will be able to provide specific details.
Some live on Ft McNair as well as it is very expressive to live in DC in Soldiers pay.
There are both. The open vehicles are used during the warmer months and the closed vehicles are used during the colder months.
Yes. The US government has proof of service. Contact your local VA on line or in the phone book.
As of Saturday 01.20.18 the answer is yes. The National Park Service is doing their best to keep the parks open. However, there may be some services thay are limited in capacity including access to buildings like restrooms. Additionally, staffing may be limited. If you plan on visiting our National Parks, park officials are asking that people be viligant in their efforts to "leave no trace."
I think everyone have to come through the main gate.
Additionally, Astronauts
If you have to ask that it's probably not your kind of place. -Sincerely, a perplexed Sailor
In the parking lot, yes; I don't believe you can ride bikes though the grounds.
The grave of a William Christman is the oldest grave. Dont think he was of Native American heritage.
WE SAW IT AND AS FAR AS I KNOW THERE IS NO WAY TO GET PEOPLE TO STOP. SORRY
We just walked in. We bought tickets for the train tour. It was worth it, because the cemetery is so big.
No. Only on holidays.
No
If you can get permission from the coordinator but I definitely would run it but then especially when soldiers are involved.
First and foremost, I'm very sorry for the loss and I wish I could help with the Garrison. Once you're in the cemetery there's a lot of help here that help with families. Just seek them out and they will help you. Welcome home and God bless.
You must have at least one day of active duty military service other than for training. That will soon change with new eligibility
Just Google Arlington National cemetery grave locator 👏
Fresh cut flowers may be placed on graves at any time. ANC provides portable temporary cones for flowers that the public may use. These cones can be found throughout the cemetery in centralized containers. Artificial flowers may be placed on gravesites from October 10 through April 15. Flowers may be placed at the bottom of a column at the niche wall or in the columbarium.
I suggest you contact Arlington directly. I don't think they respond to questions posted here on Google.
The standard grave markers are made of Vermont Marble. The Cemetery only allows these since 2017 because of space and maintenance concerns.
Yes there is for the tour. Make sure you bring your veterans ID card.
Extremely difficult to accomplish because the soldier would have to show documentation that he is the sole surviving relative and that's he was actually taking care of him. Additionally, he would have to commit to being buried at Arlington as well.
They do have an app available where you can search for gravesites
Is it open to the public?
To close April to October 8 a.m. M. A 7 p. M., From October to April from 8 a.m. M. At 5 p. M., Every day
Arlington National Cemetery is almost exactly 1 square mile. It is 639 acres.
Please call to confirm this but on my several visits I have seen identical wheelchairs near some of the tour stops. I believe they have them for Disabled Vets.
Yes, it is always proper etiquette to fold a flag properly. It shows respect for the flag and the veteran.
He's the commander in chief. I would say Yes Robert Kennedy didn't Serv his buried next to John F Kennedy. WW 2 war hero.
Don't know. Not sure they can have to check at ft Myers or the cemetery office sorry
If he is buried there they should have a list of names in The book of records on all who are buried there if not you can call the Hall of records in Ohio as you have the social security number they should be able to give you copies of his records.
Yes
I don't believe it is, at most, fenced off. Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is also fenced off. You can still see them from distance, just obey the signage and fenced areas.
As far as I'm aware it is open to the public still.
Absolutely not!
When you walk into the gate proceed thru screening and there's a visitor assistant waiting to answer all your questions
Families may visit Arlington National Cemetery any day between sunrise and sundown
Arlington Cemetery will open up on August 16th Sunday 2020
At the visitors center
Sections are not specialized in any manner. Veterans from all eras and branches are interred in all sections.
Yes, the cemetery is still closed to visitors at this time.
I suspect the bad attitude of the staff members turn customers off
You can make arrangements with the gate official by calling the Arlington Cemetery main line.
No they have water their but that is it. Eat somewhere in DC before you come or eat after you come to Arlington.
There are so many,Veterans that would like that honor, they just don't have the space? But also many factors involved into the process.
Yes but you have to let them know in advance that you are handicap so they can make accommodations for you.
The metro is nearby. It might be inadvisable to seek and follow instructions on the internet. Get off. Come out and ask someone for clear direction. Generally, everything is to your right when you emerge from the normal out.
Tomb Guard Sentinals
Maybe 180 to 220 seats. There are 2 x 12 or 13 rows with 6 to 8 seats a row.
Yes you can. At least, don't get lost!
You can take a guided tour, or a self guided tour. Try this. https://freetoursbyfoot.com/self-guided-tour-notable-women-buried-arlington-national-cemetery/
There is an app that can search for a grave site, then it will guide you to it. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mil.anc.mobile.android.ext
Yes. It is a very safe place to visit. The police there, the military, and also the other employees are very helpful, mindful, and respectful. Please, please do make sure to mention yr concern to them, so they will be even more mindful to watch out for you and make sure you are safe. I hope you can visit Arlington and that you have a good experience. My very best wishes to you ma'am.
Yes. The Pentagon is a short walk or metro ride.
For specifics on services being conducted at ANC and services that will end at ANC for the internment, please contact the funeral home directly. It will be difficult to get the appropriate information that you are looking for through Google Maps. Calling the coordinating office at ANC may be your best option. Good luck!
Alington is a military cemetery. I don't think the lady you looked for is buried in a military cemetery. In any case you have to ask the municipalities I think.
There is no cost for visiting the cemetery. When you enter to the main visitor center, there are a few interactive displays where you can search the graves by name.
If not it would be a good idea.
Sorry, i do not know
Only in visitor center, before entering actually, none in Cemetery.
Call a florist shop and they will deliver
Yes
There at the front office on the cemetery
The hours in which it is open
Arlington National Cemetery Is No Longer Pet-Friendly. WASHINGTON — Pets will no longer be allowed to accompany visitors to Arlington National Cemeterystarting Wednesday, one of several new policies announced by the Army.
Yes ask at the front desk they will help you
If it's true you do not need passes, there's parking in the street and it's free.
No ghost, but there are over 400,000 brave, honorable men and women that gave their lives to defend and secure our liberty.
There are vendors near by and there are items to purchase at the welcome center, but nothing actually inside the gates due to the hallowed nature of Arlington
Yes, if you stand facing JFK's burial site look to your left and you will see a small white cross that marks RFK's grave
You might want to call the cemetery and get that info.
You would have to talk to the staff and the VA more than likely.
Any veteran that has served for at least one full day and has an honorable discharge is eligible for burial in a National Cemetery. Due to space restrictions, Arlington has more strict requirements for in ground burial. Above ground is less strict (cremated remains). Rules for internment are managed by the Department if Veterans Affairs. The definitive answer on individual cases can be found by contacting them about Arlington and all National Cemetaries.
They have electronic database in welcoming center.
The tomb of the unknown soldier is about 15 minutes walk from the entrance to the cemetery.
There is a pay parking lot near the entry gates.
Free and they have a bus tô the graves far but s all free
It is free to enter and walk through the cemetery. If you drive, parking is $2 per hour. Best to go by car or bus as it gets full. There is a hop on hop off trolley that runs through the cemetery and it has a fee if $13.50 per adult. Less for seniors and children. Trolley tour is best as it covers the whole cemetery and you can get off anywhere and get back on as often as you want. It is really the only way to get anywhere especially to see specific graves as the cemetery is beyond huge.
It looks like this link right here should give you the form you need! Thank you all for your service! https://www.arlingtoncemetery.mil/Funeral-Information/After-the-Funeral/Vehicle-Passes
This should hopefully be just as useful for you as it is for those looking for a burial marker! https://www.arlingtoncemetery.mil/Explore/Find-a-Grave
Runs every 30 minutes starting at 9:00. It requires a ticket you and runs in a continuous loop. There are at least a couple dozen stops where you can get off, walk around or watch the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers, then hop back on and get off somewhere else.
Free
This sounds like something best handled via a phone call to them.
Of you plan on going to Arlington cemetery they have a map a guides throughout the cemetery. You can download the map online.. have a great time
To those who have fallen for our country, you are not forgotten. For those who we may not know who you are, your country honors you for all you have given.
Yes
Hi William, thank you for reaching out. Arlington National Cemetery has up to 30 funerals per weekday (Monday - Friday) and up to 10 on Saturdays. Thank you for helping us honor the fallen who rest here.
They have an important job to do. Their whole focus is to perform that job, even during a crisis. This is exactly what they did on 911. While the plane crashed into the Pentagon only a few miles away, they performed their duty.
If you're attending an actual funeral, I'd recommend the dress. Just visiting:It can be more causal.
They have a few "Wheelchair accessible trolleys" that go around the cemetery. They usually don't allow Electronic scooters(which I would assume golf carts too)on them though.
It started as Martha Custus plantation. Once her 1st husband passed, she then Married George Washington (yes that George Washington). The tomb of the unknowns were being watched over by the guards of the unknowns even when the Pentagon was attact on 911. They perform the changing of the guard and all other functions required of their duty.
There are actually three different gates. I would call and ask bcuz t bff e huge main gate is very busy. Was there last week but with the government shutdown they may only one gate oen.
Wreaths Across America places Remembrance Wreaths at Arlington each December. At the request of ANC officials they do not place wreaths at any marker that has the Jewish religious symbol of the Star of David out of respect of the Jewish tradition to not decorate a headstone. All others receive a wreath, regardless of the religious symbol shown.
You should contact them directly via a phone call to have this answered.
Thank you, they have all the paperwork and we are having full military honors. I just hope we get enough notice so we can arrange our flights from the UK.
Call & ask? Maybe Hire a professional photographer in the Arlington area to do it & mail it to you🤔📸
This might be best answered by contacting them directly via a phone call.
Around 400,000😭
They are the selected Honor Guard. A subset of the Old Guard who are chosen via an extremely rigorous selection process...to wit, the badge they wear is the second-rarest military badge that can be earned. First being the Astronaut Badge.
I think Herbert Hoover is also buried at Arlington. My brother in law was a member of the Old Guard, he was the wheel horse rider on the cason at Kennedy's funeral and we have pictures of him also at General McArthur's and Hoover's funerals.
Yes, but check with the family to be sure.
Hi Duncan - weapons are not allowed on the cemetery property.
Hi Henry - the wreath-laying starts at 11 a.m. at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Immediately following it will be the national Veterans Day observance in the Memorial Amphitheater. More information is available at https://www.arlingtoncemetery.mil/Media/News/Post/5963/.
Hi Dane - the cemetery is a military installation. When the cemetery is closed, the gates are all closed and locked so there is no way to visit afterhours. Please note that from April-September, we are open 8 a.m.-7 p.m.
Hi John - we're not sure what FD stands for, but the other two are typically used for Legion of Merit and Purple Heart. if there's a headstone you've seen that acronym on, please send us the grave location and we can look into it. For a full listing of headstone and marker inscriptions, please visit https://www.cem.va.gov/hmm/abbreviations.asp.
Hi Sylvia - yes, flowers are allowed at gravesites. For more information, visit https://www.arlingtoncemetery.mil/Funerals/After-the-Funeral/Floral-Wreath-Tributes-at-Gravesite.
Hi Kelvin - urns should be no larger than 9x9x9 inches (does not include companion urns); if the urn exceeds this size, Arlington National Cemetery staff should be made aware before the interment date.
It is located in section 35, near the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
The ANC Explorer app for Android and Apple is perfect for finding loved ones graves and will even show you their location on a map of the cemetery. I believe the arlington cemetery website has similar features. If all else fails there are resources at the visitor center with helpful staff and volunteers.
It's two Gates that may be available for you. The main gate which is off of Memorial Drive the secondary gate may be available to you which is off Columbia Pike which is the service complex gate. The closest hotel is the one directly off of Columbia Pike which is the Sheraton National. Otherwise the rest of hotels will be in Crystal City and Pentagon City and then you have to take the Metro ito cemetery stop. Due to security measures that is subject to change. Always check after Thanksgiving on wreaths across american and the cemtery website for changes.
Hi Shantanu - the Arlington Cemetery metro stop is right outside the main entrance of the cemetery. The Pentagon, Pentagon City and Rosslyn metro stations are all about a 10-15 minute walk away.
Hi DiAnne - unfortunately we do not have wheelchairs available to rent. Handicapped visitors with ID are able to go on the tour trolley along with one companion for free. You also may want to consider taking the complimentary graveside shuttle to the grave. After you arrive, let the ticketing agent at the tour counter know where the grave is and they'll take you right to the grave and pick you up when you're ready to leave.
Hi Dan - yes. Fresh cut flowers may be placed on gravesites at any time. Artificial flowers may be placed on gravesites from Oct.10-April 15. For more information, visit https://www.arlingtoncemetery.mil/Funerals/After-the-Funeral/Floral-Wreath-Tributes-at-Gravesite.

Yes there is. There is a trolley bus you have to get a ticket from the counter inside the main building
Hi there - each request is unique and the length of time it takes for scheduling is typically several weeks to several months and depends on many factors, including the family's ability to provide all documents to verify eligibility, any special requests, requests for military funeral honors with funeral escort (which can take take longer to schedule because of additional military resources such as escorts and the caisson), requests for one of the chapels located on Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, etc.The cemetery representative assigned your case can give you a better estimate based on your specific situation.
Hi Bridget - there is parking at our main entrance for visitors. People with family passes are able to drive onto the cemetery property to drive to a specific grave. Other visitors who want to visit a specific grave can either walk, take the trolley (there is a cost associated with this), or request a drop off and pick up from our complimentary graveside shuttle.
Better to call them to check. Parking is limited
By the cemetary interpretive bus service or on foot.
First burial was May 1864 Official authorization for burials was June 1864
The cemetery covers 624 acres -- most people on foot tend to spend 2-3 hours here. Depending on what you want to visit, your visit could take longer. We recommend you download our mobile app, ANC Explorer. You can put in sites you want to visit and it will create a walking tour for you and tell you how long it will take.

Yes - we stayed at The Virginian Suites.. I highly recommend it and it's right there around the corner from the cemetery.. I mean 300 yards walking distances very easy plus your car is parked.. Furthermore, the shuttle from The Virginian Suites takes you to the metro station which then can take you into DC or anywhere else but there are many other motels in and around.
Hi Judy - yes. When you arrive, let the gate guards know what funeral you're here for. They'll direct you where to park. Typically funeral attendees will park near the Admin Building in our queuing lanes. If we expect a large turn out, we will have attendees park on Memorial Avenue (near the main entrance). Families will still be directed to the queuing lanes so they can go inside the Admin Building to meet with their assigned cemetery representative.
Former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis is laid to rest in the Kennedy family gravesite, which is in Section 45.
Arlington National Cemetery is named after the original name of the estate the cemetery grounds are on - the Arlington Estate. The name 'Arlington' won out over 'Mount Washington,' which is what George Washington Parke Custis first intended calling the 1,100-acre tract of land that he had inherited at the death of his father when he was three years old. Arlington was the name of the Custis family ancestral estate in the Virginia tidewater area.
Hi Jaime - yes, there is parking at the cemetery. There's a garage at our main entrance on Memorial Avenue. More information is available at https://www.arlingtoncemetery.mil/Visit/Getting-Here/Parking.

Upon the death of the veteran or veteran's spouse, the Primary Next of Kin or Person Authorized to Direct Disposition should contact a local funeral home to arrange for any desired services in the hometown. The PNOK, PADD or the funeral director should telephone the Arlington National Cemetery's customer service center at 1-877-907-8585 to arrange for the interment/inurnment service.

Many families hire private photographers or videographers to capture a funeral service. Other families have someone in attendance take photos or video; it is up to the family what they want to do. If the cemetery, ceremonial guard or branch of service sends people to cover the service, all footage is available to download at no cost because it is in the public domain. Please note not all services are covered by military public affairs staff.

If you are attending the funeral as a guest, you should check with the family members who organized the service. If you are a visitor and see a funeral happening within the cemetery, you should not take any photos of a private ceremony.

There are a few close to Arlington National Cemetery. The Sheraton Hotel is two miles away from the cemetery. There is a less expensive hotel close by, Days Inn, 1.5 miles away from the cemetery that will put you close to the Iwo Jima Memorial entrance of Arlington National Cemetery. The other hotels are in Arlington, Crystal City, and Washington DC. Another option is to try one of the Air BnB's in the area. They are friendly, within your price range, and you will have a better chance to get close to the things that you want to see.
I think the closest is in Lorton.
Yes there is its on the blue line and labeled for the cemetery it is just a short walk from the station to the cemetery

As a disabled veteran (100%) but no WC needed...I wonder, after being at Arlington this Veteran's Day weekend... Has those in charge considered either some type of electric/ battery scooter or small golf cart type of transport for us to use. Its sad to have to minimize the sites because of long distance walking.
Go to the official website and click on " find a grave" and download the app.

If you have the time you can easily do 4-6 hours. Besides you will be walking to all of the sites you will see the Soldier walking his post at the Tomb of the Unknown. You can also be lucky and be there during a wreath lay ceremony like I have seen.
There is no precise number since several people are being buried there every day. All known resources state greater than 400000 people are buried there at this time.
You can get street parking over by the Iwo Jima Memorial (parking lot itself is currently under construction), on Meade St. or up in the neighborhood, then it's about a 1/2 mile walk to the main gate.
