It's free the whole month of September. What i did is I got there early with my family used street parking stayed there for two hours and parking was 4 dollars. If you can manage to have someone in your group leave the sheds after an hour and a half to feed the meter again every two hour you can stay longer and pay half the parking fee

Tough to do alot with a big group, especially with kids. They have a tendency to get tired. I'd do the aquarium one day, and the science and industry possibly the other. Boat tour is great for adults, but most kids won't be interested and it isn't cheap for the time. Lincoln Park Zoo is super nice and is Free. Big bonus there since you will be spending quite a bit at the other places. Also the lakefront is awesome.

There is parking around the museum campus on the street metered and lot parking down by the planetarium. It is $25 however you can park all day and take advantage of the other museums in the area, take a bus downtown and in the summer ride the water taxi from there to Navy Pier.

When I went on Sunday they only briefly checked bags at the door so yes you can bring in your lunch. There's plenty of eating areas with tables downstairs in the dolphin viewing area and on Sunday there were families having lunch there with outside food.

Shedd aquarium's website lists out the free days for each year. If you have a Bank of America credit/debit card you get free entry to aquarium and museums on first Sunday of every month. But that is just basic entry and you need to buy other tickets for aquatic show, string ray touch(seasonal exhibits) and other special exhibits.

Although we did not bring in snacks, i saw many families with drinks and snacks for their children. They do state on their website, no large back packs except diaper bags. However, they let families in with large bags and inspected them.

Visitors are allowed to bring their own food and you will find places to eat. One of the places they have is a café located on the bottom where there is a huge glass to see the dolphins. You will see signs though that will direct you to a cafeteria dining area.
