This was very cool! I’d recommend you pay the money and go a little early and take a short hike as it is in a beautiful area. My only recommendation is buy tickets that sit on the side with three seats (even if there are only two of you- the view is better!) I added some photos I took on the trip up and on of the ravine we followed as we hiked. It was a 15 minute hike out so we didn’t go far. It was very cool area and train!

The Cog Railway to Mount Washington is something I truly believe everyone should go on in their lifetime. The trains themselves have that classic, nostalgic look that’s so fun to be on. The views on the way up are incredible and there’s a guide on each train that gave plenty of information about the area and history of the white mountains. Everyone was very helpful giving information and answering questions. The train takes you to the observatory at the top and let’s you stay an hour. The views at the top are breathtaking in every way and there’s a museum that gives a lot of history information. All this is possible through the cog railway, which takes you all the way to the top with scenic views without the hassle of having to drive or hike. This is a must do experience.

The Cog Railway was an excellent ride. The View and history are amazing. And once you get to the summit the view is spectacular if you get a clear day. And here's a fun fact: they said the railroad would go to the moon when it was built in 1869. 100 years later we actually went to the Moon.

From the lady on the ticket desk to the people who worked the rails this was an amazing New Hampshire experience! We have seen some beautiful views on our travels but the view from the peak of Mount Washington is phenomenal!! (Check the weather before your trip.) We had clear blue skies and could see Maine. The other tip would be you can enjoy an ice cream in shorts in +60f at the bottom take suitable clothing for the top otherwise you will be ice at the top. Temperature was +40f but with the wind chill made it a lot colder. Make time for the museum at the base station. Check with staff if the building at the summit is open. Enjoy!

Last train of day is the discount one. Regular prices vary whether steam or biodiesal but neighborhood of $70. You can pre buy on website or buy in person. The popular times and steam will sell out in advance.
Yes but in advance notice
The very nature of Mt Washington makes any trip by any means up the mountain subject to change at the literal last moment. Especially in the autumn. Taken from the cog railway website: "All schedules, fares and motive power are subject to change without notice. Train trips may be shortened due to extreme weather. In this event, passengers will be provided a credit toward the purchase price of their ticket." It may not be "maintenance" but rather ice. And sometimes things do break, requiring maintenance, and those things are not planned ahead of time.
There are stairs in gift store, but I believe there is a elevator, the cog is not but they will help hadicap on and off cog and there are wheelchairs at both locations for public to use
Both are good. Becoz if A is in the front while climbing up the hills and B behind, it will be the opposite while coming down. B will be in the front and A will be at the back. In fact getting a window seat is good. It's 3 + 2 seating arrangement.
It varies. $72 is the base all the way up to peak foliage steam train price of $89. For the most part almost all tickets are priced between $72-$80 for the bio-deisels. If you are looking for the best price look for seats on the "A" platform they will be the cheapest and sell out first.
78$ is for a to and fro ticket... if I am not wrong... one way ticket is 51$
I had a different experience. My tickets were refunded less than 2 hours before the trip because of pouring rain.
It is close to 1 hour to get up the mountain. You get 1 hour at the top to enjoy the views, shop, and eat. Then it's a 1 hour ride back down to the bottom. So a 3hr experience all together.
Get an aisle seat, near the middle. You'll be fine. Just remember that you are always on the ground no matter how high you go.
Nov 1 to December 31 train goes upto Wumbauk station, 3400feet
About 45 minutes up, an hour at the top, and about 45 minutes down.
They open the windows but wear a mask to make sure for higher protection. We wore a mask throughout
Service animals are allowed. They prefer you give them notice but it is not required. I saw this answer from the Cog Railroad representative on Trip Advisor.
I believe you go on standby for the next train if there is room.
Corina, That posting was not ours and is not legitimate.
I believe the steam takes longer to reach the top
We went on the 21. October. Only went half way up. Might want to call them.
I'm sure its fine. But it was 36 degrees up there when I went a couple weeks ago. Bring warm clothes. Also you need to make a reservation to get into the Observatory. The Cog Railway doesn't do that for you. You don't want to be stuck outside for an hour with the wind blowing in cold weather.
No, it is a scenic town in the middle of white mountains
All week, most of the time the summit is in the clouds.
It is a total round trip about three hours. I'm pretty sure you can get a one way ticket and hike up or down the other way.
May be open upto Oct. No idea about stay.
Don't know there price for this year as it changes every year but you can check out their website for current prices. You can also make a reservation on their website. https://www.thecog.com/schedule-tickets/
Yes you get smoke smell. It depends on the wind. And if windows are open in the car.
There are some restaurants on Route 302, but at the Base Station and the summit of Mount Washington they have cafeteria's with food options.
3 hrs. 1 hour up then you get 1 hour to take in the view and visit there gift shop and get something to eat, then 1 hour back down
No you don't need to buy ticket
We stayed at Lodge at Jackson Village on RT 16.

Be sure to check website and schedule. Some of the trips are with the old coal burning steam engines. We thought that more authentic, and it was just too cool!! Excellent experience. We overheard some rather condescending enviro types complaining about the coal and pollution. They would have no part of coal engine. I don't think the diesel, is any worse, considering the energy to find it, make it and haul to site. But most important, DON'T MISS THIS FANTASTIC TRIP!
Not sure of exact cost, but I think it was around $20 for 2 of us to drive up yourself. Awesome drive with breath taking views, but if anybody in the vehicle is afraid of heights, may not be a very enjoyable ride to the summit.
As long as it's not the last train for the day, it can be sorted I guess..
It's about 3 hours round trip. An hour each way and an hour at the top to eat, shop, learn, send a postcard, and explore!
We've been several times and it's amazing and a thrilling ride up and down. Be sure to do the "stand up" half way up. And go outside on the deck and see the world and the presidential range. There is food, a gift shop and nice people from all over the place. It's a great experience. Check weather and temperature before you go. In spring and fall, yes a coat. And in summer, a sweater. You're on top of the world. It's great.
We have a specialty parking lot for busses and such :)
There is a heated station at the summit, and the train cars are also heated. However, the mountain is now covered in snow and ice, so I'm not sure how much longer the train will be going. Call ahead.
Yes, you could buy the tickets on line. They have discounts for veterans and if you take the last train at 330 pm it only cost $55 PER PERSON. Really nice ride up and down.
45 mins to an hour. If you have great weather its not enough time to admire the beautiful view.
Each boxcar has it's own advantage points. If your a camera shutterbug like myself, I prefer the first seat. Just be sure to switch sides on the way back down so you don't you don't miss any of the amazing views.
Hello Johann, it is possible but always be prepared to hike back down just in case. It is not a guarantee that we make it to the summit. Tickets can be purchased at the Post Office on the Summit.
About $50. I think they have revised the rates. Please check their website
The story is in the visitor center of a young woman that died of exposure many decades ago.
Mt. Washington Cog Railway. When Sylvester Marsh was building it, his contemporaries laughed and referred to it as a railway to the moon.
No pets allowed on the train but i think you can drive up the mountain with your animal
M 6 is being built in the shop on site. There was no mention about a name for M 6. Call and ask.
Tuck a hat and gloves in your coat pocket. You will be glad you did.
Think of a bicycle, the pedals are attached the cog wheel (that spikey round thing that the chain goes around). Well the cog train, like the bicycle has these 2 giant cog wheels that run on the track like a giant bicycle chain laid flat all the way up the mountain. When youre going up a 5,000 ft mountain, its much safer as the cog locks in and out of the track
The answers already provided are correct. Not cheap, but the views are worth it.
