As long as it's not the last train for the day, it can be sorted I guess..
It is hard to miss it back down. They give alot of notice over the PA system. They repeat it many times. They also have the numbers of how many should be on. Beautiful scenery, well worth it.

Just make sure you don't miss the train?! If you think there's a reason you may, don't take the chance going up. We are responsible for ourselves at the end of the line so don't expect anybody else to have to pick up the slack.

They say you have to walk if you miss but they wouldn't really do that to you unless they had no other choice. There really is no reason to miss the train back down you have forewarning and you see long line boarding. If all the seats are accounted for they won't let you on a different one, they can't.
