I believe you go on standby for the next train if there is room.
Happened to us we took next one which was still parked
They also make an announcement when the train gets there.

They will put you on next train, if there is one.
If there is room you can get the next train, but seat IS NOT GUARANTEED. Long hike down 3 to 4 hrs
The staff is excellent they make every effort to get everyone that goes up goes back down
You go to standby, and wait for a open seat on a different train. It is on a first come basis and you may have to wait a while.
