The hike up to Compton Peak was beautiful and not too strenuous. Everyone at the visitor center was nice and knowledgeable. They have maps, calendars, a museum and other wonderful affordable gifts. I recommend that you take pics at every overlook. Remember to take water and throw away and recycle at designated areas.

This is the first National Park I've been able to see with my own eyes. The views are breathtakingly beautiful. There are plenty of scenic viewing areas on the way up so that you can stop and take pictures or eat lunch. They also have picnic areas if you want to enjoy your lunch and let the children run around. There are tons of trails to explore on foot or horseback. Oh, did I mention the breathtaking views. This is a bucket list must see.

Beautiful National Park, absolutely gorgeous! All the Park Rangers were exceedingly nice. Big Meadows campground had everything I needed. The camp store attendant was very friendly and helpful. The washing machine and dryers were reasonable. Showers do cost $2.50 for 5 min. It was enough time to take a shower, I was surprised. Highly recommend! I am definitely going to return.

Great place to enjoy nature. Tons of hiking around and opportunities for views, waterfalls and just being surrounded with beauty. The skyline drive is an epic drive with insane overviews throughout the entire length. Highly recommended.

Most trails allow pets. But be mindful of the mosquito and tick population. Pets will be particularly vulnerable. Dont know what they sell in terms of animal safe bug repellent but id look into it
Yes. Anywhere secluded with a pull-off is good for car camping. Some places charge for parking, but payment is usually on the honor system.
Yes, lots of them. In fact the The Appalachian Trail goes right through the Shenandoah Park.
Shenandoah National Park prohibits visitors from bringing any firewood into the park that isn't certified as being heat treated, and instead advises purchasing or gathering firewood within the park.
Typically around the middle of October. If you're looking for a "full fall view experience", I'd say first week of November.
Yes and no, there's always something to see, something to explore, though the rain in the clouds kind of impede that. We visited last week and only saw one really bright yellow orange beautiful tree. The rest were Brown and spotted and look dead :-) :-( my saying is this, a bad day at the Shenandoah Park, better than a good day at work :-) :-).
Only one trial is wheel chair accessible and that is Lumberlost trail. No wheelchairs to rent.
Isabella Mitchell ... Hello! Depends where you go and what you want to do? Our Shenandoah Valley is Beautiful with the Leaves of Fall turning Colors. I Hope I have Helped you. Enjoy and come Visit Our Shenandoah Valley for The Bear are Sleeping in their Dens.
yes it is beautiful but if you are a strong hiker or bike you might have to go downward because there are strong hills
$30 per car. If you walk or ride a bike in it is cheaper $5-$10 depending on mode of transportation. They also do senior, military, first responders, and season pass discounts.
Pretty much - it runs along skyline drive.
https://www.nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/lodging.htm
The Shenandoah National Park is in Virginia. Is that what u mean by Shenandoah National Park. And also Shenandoah is about 45 minutes away from the National Park. I hope this helps. NOT sure where your coming from but GOOD LUCK!!!!
You can also take pictures from top of hill. You can easily drive there and park
I didn't see no electric sites When I was there I didnt see no dog signs
It depends on how much time you have... hours or days or... The Skyline Drive is through the Shenandoah National Park and spectacular - make sure you give yourself plenty of time. At about Waynesboro VA is where it ends and where the Blue Ridge Mountain Highway starts. There are lots of hiking trails though you must be prepared and reasonably fit.. You can do longer hikes and camp along the way - the Appalachian Trail, which starts up in Pennsylvania, wends it's way along through the mountains. Alternatively, you can spend time driving through the Valley, off the freeway, and visit the little towns dotted through the area.
https://www.nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/basicinfo.htm
This is a drive with stops along the eay to hike. Book eariy for the hotels.
When we wentblast weekend they were still green on Skyline drive. We were at 2000 ft altitude.. that could be the reason.
In the campgrounds there are fire pits. Always pays to bring your own wood though. Don't scavenge wood from the forest floor. It breaks down and helps the forest with needed nutrients.
If you want to be in a cabin you have to make a reservation bc it goes fast
Just there 2 weeks ago 30 for a vehicle a week. Also you can buy a pass for 80 a year that's good at 'll national parks
Drive the Blue Ridge Parkway. Stunning view of the valley. And then continue on to DC
Look into the area of Luray, Va. Days inn is at the base of the entrance.
Yes. The park rangers are sticklers about food being left out and trash
We didn't see any bears at all. We had bear spray and bells for when we hiked. Also, in the camp grounds there are rangers. If people follow the food rules, there shouldn't be any trouble.
Stayed Skyland 6/17. WiFi in main dining room but not in rooms which are in separate buildings. Knew in advance and was satisfactory for me. Rooms regular motel type but lovely views.
In the northern half of the Shenandoah AT segment there is one composting outhouse maintained by volunteers. Other than that you will have access to a few of the waysides to use those restrooms. So bring your trowel, and please follow the guidelines for properly burying human waste along the AT.
Moderate is how i would quantify the waterfall we wen to. Nothing of the scale out west like Yosemite
Go to visitor's center and get the trail map, its about $9.00 it gives you much more detail than any of the other maps we used including some of the on line apps for natural parks. Yes you can see the mountains.yes you can also camp.
It will be better if you make reservation as it tends to be busy around this time due to fall colors..
It depends on the foraging regulations of that specific forest. You'd have to contact them to find out.
"Shenandoah River: Many commercial mining projects have been carried out along the Shenandoah River. You likely won't see any of these mines in operation today, but recreational prospecting continues along the river. The North and South forks of the Shenandoah River remain reliable sources of placer gold. They can be accessed via the towns of Front Royal and Luray." All above the answer is correct. There are many of picnic area.
There are several ones; such as Overall Run Falls, Dark Hollow Falls, South River Falls, Rose River Falls, Lewis Falls, Doyles River Falls, Jones Run Falls, Brown Gap Waterfall loop, ...
Look for the lines of people. That's where you'll find them
Colors are beautiful right now, but if I had to guess I'd put peak on the day you arrive. Nice timing! 👍
Check the web as to where the picnic areas are. I know the one around mile marker 39 had grills.
No! You can either hike into the park from the Appalachian trail and stay on the trail. And hike for free but to go into the park and hike you have to go through one of the gates pay the entry fee. And then either get a spot in one of the campgrounds or go to the ranger station at apply for a Backcountry permit.
Sorry, we didn't do any tubing. There is tubing and whitewater rafting on the New River.
Along the river, yes, at your discretion but if you are taking about the park itself, then no
Reservation needed for all campgrounds located in the park. Big meadow's is most popular and would need a year in advance reservation
Yes .. but visitor center not . Some shops and exhibits are at the Byrd exhibit. Must wear face masks .
Yes they are
Yes there is. And most are open
I would go to the Byrd visitors center near Big Meadow's. They will be able to give you great advice!
If it's open I went last weekend
The days needed will vary depending on your activities. If you're going to hike some of the trails, you'll need more time than if you're just going to cruise Skyline Drive and take pictures at the scenic vista stops.
About 75 miles west of Washington DC. The northern entrance is near Front Royal Virginia.
https://www.nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/biking.htm
Yes. The ones at the Dickey Ridge visitors center are open. Full "comfort stations" facilities with running water and lights. There are several pit-toilets around (like at the Elk Wallow picnic area. The full toilets at the Elk Wallow shop are closed, just like the shop). And the toilets by the Thoron Gap entrance were open. Sinks, toilets, lights, etc. We were there last weekend. I'm sure the rangers at the enterances have more info. But make sure you grab a map! Your cell service (and internet data) may not be available when you really need it.
Depends on which track you're talking about. Most of the smaller and lesser known ones are hardly marked at all. It's best to follow trails listed on maps available with official kiosks. You could also follow other people going about. You can get lost on unmarked trails.
I believe so, but I would contact the park directly, to make sure there are trails and they can update you on wildlife in the area. They were great about letting me know about the bears and deer.
A lot of the facilities are closed, but the drive is open. Have plenty of gas, snacks and drinks
No I don't know that's possible
Confirming that Front Royal is the northern entrance to the park
Big Meadows campground, Skyline Dr, Stanley, VA 22851
Big Meadow
There are also plenty of places to stay in Paige County (on the Luray side of the park).
Nope, just a few waterfalls and soaking pools
Its going to be upwards of 20 degrees colder than the valley. Also more likely to have snow.... but if you enjoy that, its probably absoutely breathtakingly gorgeous.
Brown is a color. It's extremely dry. Peak colors in 2-3 weeks.
No there are no dog park. All NPS are leash only where dogs are allowed.
The visitor center closes by 5 pm. The skyline drive is open 24*7 I believe.
Yes! There are! Pleasantly found enough facilities such as BBQ grills on srounding of Huts, drinking / washing Water tabs and wash rooms 👏👌👍
You are limited to the 4 main campgrounds in an RV. https://www.nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htm
$30 just for park admittance (for the week).
The 40 minutes is if you go straight through. If you're taking time to stop at overlooks and enjoy, you should plan over an hour. And depending on your plans, you'll need to plan the return trip :-). I suggest taking some picnic supplies and stopping at an overlook.
You must pay to enter the park and camping along the drive must be done in the campgrounds which are not expensive. To camp for free you must be backpacking
I for git the name but there is one site out of 3 that has cabins like places but as far as good food you will need take a ride for that it .the northern end of park is your best bet for good food or fine dinning and if I'm right the cabins are to the south but the ride is lovely with every nice over looks I my self made all my meals that part of the experiments but that me
I agree with Kevin. No swimming areas only brooks and streams that vary in depth according to rain fall. Many also are used by anglers.
Bring plenty of Deep Woods Off. Ticks are here also.
Saturday better than Friday
Iam sure you can enter the welcome center. Also as other guide stated all of the overlooks are flat surface. Give it a shot. You'll enjoy.
There's an entry fee. Not necessarily a permit. You just keep the receipt. It's good for a week though I believe.
There are a couple or three lodges with spectacular views, trails and ammenities. Cannot think of the names. Must make reservations and are open to the public for food and souvenirs, etc. Must follow park / forest rules!.
Yes
Chris is correct. I think you can stay for two weeks, but the Shenandoah website should lead you to that info.
Probably early May. See https://www.nationalparkstraveler.org/2018/05/celebrate-spring-bloom-wildflower-weekend-shenandoah-national-park
You need to reserve a camp site, or get a back county permit.
Hello Richard In Ireland it depends on the weather when it comes to camping but reservations are needed best of luck enjoy
No
They do not allow because protect the habitat of the animals
They are people and it is a park for people to enjoy so it's very possible
If you want to up to you.
According to this you are allowed. https://www.nps.gov/grca/learn/management/upload/Firearms-in-IMRparks2-2010.pdf
Yes
Wikipedia says its Native American in origin. Theres an entire etymology page on there
Black bears, rabbits, birds, deer, snakes (too cold for snakes now though), frogs, fish
this time of the year is the best time of year foliage in Shenendehowa Park. But this year same as last year the foliage hasn't been the greatest because of the warmth and a lot of rain. But some of the best places to view foliage in the Shenendehowa Park are Greggy pinnacle, the viaduct and graveyard fields.
If you want to camp, you have to see the Shenandoah website. If you want to walk or drive, I think so, it's open.
No the town beside it is paris but the laws state that you can not launch land or operate a drone inside of a national park but nothing about launching landing and operating outside a national park ive heard of people using this loop hole alot and even had a park ranger find them and asked where they launched and landed and when they said outside the park he said that was leagal aslong as you dont crash it in the park or disturb nature you can fly over the park
You can make a payment per person of $ 15.00, also for 7 days $ 30.00 and you can also do it for a whole year $ 55.00 if you are older than 62 you can do it for life $ 88.00
My age is 60, but the navigation is broken in New york from Los Angeles I got up at the drive to the sky road to show up in the first place. There are places like this in the eye and feelings and feelings that are surprisingly good. Ask and ask the Internet to find it. Do not forget the place.
There are many areas.. you can choose.
Yes, there is a couple places in Luray to have a picnic. Luray Caverns and Ralph Dean Park.
I literally just asked a ranger this question last week. She said show up at 7 or 8am and get on the list for sites to become available. The sites have to be vacated by noon but I forgot to ask if people can reserve them for multiple days and just get them from say a Friday through Sunday. She said that if you get there early and are one of the first to sign up for the next available site, you usually get one. Check all the campgrounds in the park to see if any one has plain old reservations available. Also, don't forget that you can backcountry camp for free with a permit. This means that you just have to find a site that is x number of feet from the trail and bodies of water. There are also a few other regulations so check all of the rules when you go get the permit. I believe some areas may require a bear canister. Good luck and enjoy the park!
You would need to direct this question to the national park service not the Google community
Premier hiking destination, to the top is relative to the trail.
All NPS Sites are $20 per night. Been this rate for a while. The price per vehicle to enter the park has gone up this past year to I believe $35 for a week or $50 for a year. Great bargain for what you get.
There are cabins at Skyland, Lewis Mountain and I believe Big Meadows. If you go to the park website, you can get info on cabins.
$25 for a pass. One pass will allow you to enter the park for 7 days.
The northern entrance is Front Royal. About 35 miles south of there is Luray, VA. Skyline drive is about 100 miles long
Yes..the are a couple of campground up there as well. Some are just roughing it, butbthere are 3 that have hookups.
Matthews Arm Campground is typically the last to fill, so it is the safest bet for finding an open first come site.
absolutely. All of Virginia has civil war history. A great place to tour for that!
Skyline drive is incredible I actually went for my two year anniversary. We stayed at the Skyline Drive Resort. They have many discounts, and the views from the rooms are breathtaking.
Not sure about folk tale song but it is mentioned in Take Me Home Country Road by John Denver.
Shenandoah is not your place for navigable waters. Plenty of camping, hiking, waterfalls, and swimmimg holes as well as camping and hiking. Check out the national park website for more info. Id suggest the Potomac for kayaking / river related fun.
We were there in September just for the drive. The road through the park is well worth the time. It can be done in one day, or a stop overnight is a nice way to see more. There are visitor centers and waysides, gas stations, ranger stations along the way. We came in by the north entrance at Front Royal. We were given a map of the entire park road with information of everything available. It was an enjoyable day. Relaxing and beautiful scenery... And the smell of the trees!!! Just wonderful!!!
Yes. $25 for a week-long vehicle pass, $20 for a week-long motorcycle pass. $10 per person by other means. $50 for a Shenandoah Annual Pass. $80 for an America the Beautiful Annual Pass (all national parks). $0 (Free) for Active Duty military.
Call ahead and check remember they have no snow removal but it has been rather warm
Yes, unless you happen to camp over the entrance to their den. Just don't keep food that smells good in your tent because they will be powerfully hungry😂. Bears are really friendly until they decide to eat you, and then it happens so fast that it's not stressful...
Shenandoah website has many maps and other things in PDF.
I took a commuter train from DC to Harper's Ferry, WV (about an hour), then hiked the AT 55 miles from Harper's Ferry to Front Royal, VA to reach the northern entrance to the park. So it can be done!
Hi Susan. Weather is humid, typically a little windy. Temps run a little lower than surrounding areas due to the elevation. Expect nice weather and 75-90° days. Perfect for camping at night!
No
For $ 25
The gates are manned during park open hours. Hours are seasonal so check the website
This is One of the most beautiful parks I have ever seen. I have driven the whole length many times and I have hiked through the Rockies and even seen Mount Everest and what I say to everyone is every park has their special things about them you just have to find them. This in the fall with all the trees make it look like waves of leaves from 4000 feet
If you go to the park often enough, you can buy a yearly pass for $50
I stayed at the Colony House. It's was a nice room.
I-64 crosses the Blue Ridge at the bottom of Skyline in Afton. I-81 parallels it and there are entrances at Rt 33, and Rt 211, and at the top in Front Royal
On leash, there are five trails that do not permit dogs- check with the visitor center or at the pay station as you enter
The Park website will have good information on the status of the Park.
If you are looking for "fall views", then yes. First week of November is when the leaves are in full autumn colors.
Yes they have spots all the way up to pull off and get pics its awesome enjoy and be safe
Currently, during covid and winter ur best bet is a friend on the trail somewhere. Or a post office box in one of the towns right off the trail
No u can not. You have to go thru the state. However, it us a national park so ur pass will work there. A Va state pass u will need to go to vastate.gov
