Drive the Blue Ridge Parkway. Stunning view of the valley. And then continue on to DC

You can drive through pretty much anywhere. The question is what you want to see. If you just want to travel through the park to get to the other side, you can go through the E/W passes without seeing much or paying. The Skyline Drive itself runs N/S and costs $30. It's scenic, slow, and only has one gas station in Big Meadow.

Make sure you allow time to look at the views. It's beautiful! We drove it S to N when we were headed north. We had reservations at Big Meadow Lodge. It's at the halfway point. We stayed the night & drove the rest of the way the next day. They charge $30. per car.
