Matthews Arm Campground is typically the last to fill, so it is the safest bet for finding an open first come site.

Are you looking for family fun or just a getaway? You can tent camp in the National forest for free in several locations. There are also at least a couple of campgrounds in the Fort Valley area. If you're looking for something for families with kids, Jellystone campground in Luray offers some neat things, but I can't vouch for tent camping, fees, or availability.
