I believe about 2 miles, but you can take a ferry from the space needle to Westlake center then you walk down to pike street market and the ferries are on the other side. The farther you walk the shoreline the steeper the hills are to space needle so that is the path I always took.

I agree that it is very expensive! For the experience though it is worth it. You're welcomed in with a photo, the guides are knowledge of the surrounding area and explain the view as you ascend to the top. There's a bar, refreshments and restaurant. If you want to get your money's worth, plan to stay all day!
