It is one of the best shelters I've ever seen. Still breaks your heart to see all the animals there.
Venus
So I have adopted 3 dogs from here. The German shepherd the little one with the shirt and the smaller black-and-white. All lovely beautiful dogs I love this place they're willing to work with you they really do care about the animals. Please adopt.

Very helpful staff

I took my cat to the rabies vaccine/microchip clinic today. They did a fantastic job and installed the chip quickly and without upsetting the kitty! The staff was very friendly and even offered us umbrellas in line since we were waiting outside in the rain. The staff was also educating people in line about other services they offer there such as their spay/neuter clinic. I think this a fantastic place and I'm glad they offer such vital services to the public. I took off one star because it is like Social Services, you cannot get anyone in the phone but once you get in person help at the facility they are extremely helpful and friendly. I wish our state would contribute more money to important public services like these.

Here's everything you need to know about owner surrender days. https://charlottenc.gov/AnimalsCMPD/PetServices/Pages/OwnerSurrender.aspx
Right now kitten adoption is free but they suggest a donation. It's $10 to adopt a dog right now. Adoption fee varies depending on the time of year.
There are restrictions to tethering a dog on property. However there in not an ordinance that forbids it. If you feel a dog is in danger call 311 and have an officer go out to check.
About $80-90 from CMPD.....BUT they come spayed/neutered, shots are up to date, and chipped. It's definitely worth it
animals.cmpd.org is the short cut to our page. It’s still there!
Every pet is as up to date as possible on vaccines. Of course the young kittens, under 4 months, don't have rabies shots because they are too young but have what they need for their ages. Spay/neuter is also covered as well as microchips.
Yes! Now through the end of Dec 2019 all fees are waived when making a monetary donation.
No. They are not able to take bottle babies. You can bring them to us as strays and we can place them in our kitten nursery.
Yes. Call 311 to have an officer investigate. Call 311 each time it happens so a case can be built.
Yes, as long as you are a current Mecklenburg County resident. Here's what you need to know: https://charlottenc.gov/AnimalsCMPD/PetServices/Pages/OwnerSurrender.aspx
Yes! If you are looking to adopt, please come 30 minutes prior to closing times and be sure to sign in!
Yes we take canned and unopened bags of pet food. We cannot take opened or expired food. Thank you!
There's not really any free locations but there are several low cost options. Humane Society of Charlotte, Stand for Animals, SnipWell
We can only remove him from your home. If you want to remove him from your yard you need to contact a wildlife agency.
No. We do not handle wildlife. Leave it alone and it will move along.
Aiden you have to be assigned there by the Mecklenburg County community service
Lions and other exotic animals like that are not legal to own in this county or this state.
You have to make an appointment on our website at animals.cmpd.org but we are super full so we highly recommend taking other measures and looking elsewhere to rehome your pet
If you are looking to adopt, No appointment needed. If you are looking to surrender, an appointment is required and you’ll need to make one on our website.
We do not handle wildlife unless they are visibly sick or injured. If you have a nuisance wildlife issue, you need to contact a private company.
Call 311 every time there’s an issue. Have an officer come talk to you as well.
311 is still the number. It transfers over to non-emergency.
The Humane Society of Charlotte does not have a program like that but we do. It's called a staycation. Come to the shelter, pick out an adoptable dog, show ID, sign a waiver, take home for up to 5 days. Bring a leash and collar if you can.
Yes we do. Our health checks are basic so we always highly recommend getting your newly adopted to pet to a vet to establish their on-going care.
The only restrictions that would prevent someone from adopting: negative history with us (citations, found cruelty investigations, etc.) or multiple surrenders of animals over a period of time.
thank you for adopting! send us your story and pictures to our facebook page. find us @animalscmpd
Not really sure. To my knowledge they are pretty full shelter so I think they are having to use appointments.
And microchipping for just 10.00! If your pet gets let out of the gate or, God forbid, stolen. That chip can get them home. Permanent ID. Awesome and a great price.
We do not offer deworming but we do offer free rabies shots on the second Saturday of each month from 8-1045am. You can register them at the same time.
You are required to fill out the owner surrender form found here: https://charlottenc.gov/AnimalsCMPD/PetServices/Pages/OwnerSurrender.aspx Surrenders are by appointment only so once your form has been processed, you'll be contacted with a surrender date. There is a $10 surrender fee.
No, they only adopt and foster out animals. Animals that need additional care are sent to other places
Yes. Call 311 and give your info so an officer can come out and make a report.
In reality, we do not encourage dog breeding unless it is by responsible breeders who are dedicated to a specific breed and are extremely careful to maintain the integrity and health of the breeds. We have too many animals in our shelter that need forever loving homes to encourage breeding for whatever reason.
Is your neighbor bringing their cat to us? Because we will not euthanize it without giving it a chance for adoption first. If there no serious medical or behavior issues that cannot be fixed or treated then we will place them up for adoption. As for rescues: listed on our website at animals.cmpd.org is a large list of groups we work with that the owner can contact.
311 and the call will be created with Special Services.
Nothing. You can no move or mess with wildlife and we can’t either. Don’t leave food of any kind outside and don’t leave the puppy unattended. Especially if puppy has no rabies shot.
Yes we do. You can come to 8315 Byrum Dr between 11-7 weekdays and 11-5 weekdays to get a license. Bring proof of a current rabies certificate.
We are not taking any applications for spay/neuter at this time. We will be re-assessing opening applications on spay/neuter mid to late July. Keep a close eye on our main website at animals.cmpd.org to see when the applications will be accepted.
You do not! Come to the shelter, pick out a dog, tell staff, show your ID, sign a waiver, and take home for 5 days.
They will take them in but you make an appointment after you fill out a form online.
You must be 18+ years to volunteer. Kids under 18 cannot volunteer, even if they have parental guidance/supervision. This is a CMPD policy and we are under their umbrella.
Yes we do. Volunteers must be 18+ years to volunteer. We need help with walking dogs, interacting with cats, providing enrichment, and much, much more (which can include off-site events). To get started, go to animals.cmpd.org to fill out the online application. You'll find all the things that we need help with at the shelter daily.
If you live in mecklenburg county and have an ID you can surrender pet. Surrender says are Wednesday from 11-2 and Sundays 9-11.
Visit our website to see if your puppy is there. https://charlottenc.gov/AnimalsCMPD/lostandfound/Pages/default.aspx
It depends on how the animal came to us. If it’s a stray, there’s a required 3 day hold. If an owner steps forward, there’s an additional 10 day wait before we can place it for potential adoption. If it’s a surrender: some cases the animal can get a health check and placed to adoption same day; other cases may require a day or more before potential adoption (too scared, needs an evaluation by our trainer, has medical issues); in some cases they may never reach adoption due to aggression medical conditions beyond treatment.
You need to call 311 to report this and have an officer respond.
Well, there is no leach law on cats. It may well be that this is a community cat. You could ask around to friends to see if they are familiar with the cat
Yes! Absolutely. It doesn’t matter where you live. Come see us!
You have a feral cat you want to get TNR’d? You’ll need to take her to the humane society of Charlotte to get that done but you’ll be responsible for picking her up and bringing her back home. We do not do TNR at the shelter.
Still call 311
Yes we will as long as you found them in Mecklenburg County.
It depends on how long your pet has been there. You need to head to the shelter to talk to the staff about your options.
You can call 311 for a possible update.
We don’t offer training classes but the Humane Society of Charlotte does. Contact them directly for an appointment.
We do. Second Saturday of every month Rabies is free to Char-Meck pet owners only. We also offer $10 microchips for all pet owners. Here's what you need to know: https://charlottenc.gov/AnimalsCMPD/PetServices/Pages/RabiesVaccination.aspx
Yes
Right now we are running to specials. All cats, kittens, and dogs over 4 months are free with a monetary donation toward our shelter programs.
It depends on what your vet care needs are and if you live in Mecklenburg County. You'll need to come to the shelter and talk to the staff to see if you are eligible.
If your daughter lives in Mecklenburg County she can surrender them on our surrender specific days/times. Here is a link to the web page on our site that gives all the info you need to know when surrendering. Please leave us a last resort as we are very full with dogs right now.
Right now our adult males are $93. Some are reduced price at $48 or $40 and some are only $10. When we eventually start our You've Got to be Kitten me campaign, all of our kittens will be free with a financial donation, and our adults will be minimum of $10 with an added donation. They are all neutered, microchipped, up-to-date on age-appropriate shots, and have a basic health check. Keep track on our website or social media pages to find out when that special will start.
18 years old to work and volunteer with us.
When holding on to a found dog, you must hang on to it for a minimum of 14 days before rehoming or sending to rescue.
Just your ID. If you are still looking, you can check out the adoption webpage on our site for all the adoption day reminders of what you'll need. https://charlottenc.gov/AnimalsCMPD/adoption/Pages/Petsearch.aspx
Check here first: https://charlottenc.gov/HR/Pages/default.aspx It has the application process, where to send resumes and applications, and what jobs are currently available for AC&C. If you don't see anything listed for animal control right now, it's because we're not yet hiring.
If you are a Charlotte-Mecklenburg resident/pet owner we do provide owner surrenders requested euthanasia. The service is free. Owner surrender days are Sundays 9-11am and Wednesday 11am-2pm unless your pet is dying or suffering.
In case this situation isn't resolved, please call 311 to have an officer respond and investigate. We have Spanish speaking officers that can respond.
Please call 311 right away. You can remain anonymous and an officer will respond and check on the situation.
We hold free rabies for Char-Meck pet owners the second Saturday of each month. We also provide microchips for $10. The clinic is from 8-11am (arrive by 10:45am). If you need other shots, the Humane Society of Charlotte on Toomey Ave provides low-cost shots every Wednesday.
Go to the website to the volunteer section. For kitten nursery volunteer there is an online option for cmpd full volunteer you email the Volunteer Supervisor and she sends you an application. Or you can go to animal control and pick up an application
Visit the website at animals.cmpd.org
Yes. They may also take it to the closest vet or vet hospital. Rescue workers also recommend posting on Nextdoor, Facebook, Craigslist- really any social media that you can find and contacting all local vets (within you neighborhood area) to give a heads up in case someone brings a (possibly injured, or found) animal in. I hope you find your fur baby soon.
They are taking blankets and towels. They are also sharing the donations with the public.
Yes. 8-11am. Line cuts off at 1045am.
Our next offsite event is Jan 5 from 11-3 at SouthPark mall. Prices are 103 to 113.
We do offer free rabies clinics for Mecklenburg County residents. However, rabies is the only vaccine we can give. Learn more: https://charlottenc.gov/AnimalsCMPD/PetServices/Pages/RabiesVaccination.aspx
Not at the moment but watch our website at animals.cmpd.org. We do get them.
Hopefully she is okay. We do offer vouchers for treatments at a vet but it would be a limited amount. If you still need this, come to the shelter to find out what we can do to help.
If you still need this service and you are a Mecklenburg County resident, you can sign up for a free surgery here: https://charlottenc.gov/AnimalsCMPD/PetServices/Pages/SpayNeuter.aspx
If your dog is microchipped, you can give them a call at the # listed on Google Business and confirm whether or not your dog is there. If not, youll need to drop by and see if any of the dogs there are yours.
They give free rabies shots once a month but not a complete exam
We have the ability to find the vet's office using an internal database for the rabies tag but you will need to bring it to us so we can attempt to find it.
Sweet of you to provide food an water, but just like a bum if provide food and water they come back everyday..shelter has lots of Pits..especially with these recent floods..thank you for being so kind.
M
Hopefully your situation is resolved but for future reference. Call 311 every time you see the dog. Have an officer come talk to you to see if a trap is available to be set. If not, they have other options of safely capturing the dog.
We do not have the ability to provide any kind of vet care to animals outside of the ones that are considered to be our property. We also cannot perform sonograms. If you find a stray, you can call 311 to have it picked up or bring it to the shelter. Place your name down as an interested party so they can contact you if they become at risk for any reason.
No, how the best can be kill animals and keep them in cages
I'm looking for a dog, do you still have it
You must be 18 years old to volunteer and the process can take some time. However, you are welcome to fund raise and hold donation drives for us any time. Our website has a whole list of items that we always need, including things that can be built, bought, or found in your own home. animals.cmpd.org under the donations page.
Best place to keep an eye on all of our adoptables is at animals.cmpd.org which is our website. It is updated every hour.
Call the shelter and they can send it to you.
It could have been an exotic cat that someone considered bringing home as a pet. If you see it again the future, please call 311.
We are open 11-7 weekdays and 11-5 weekends. If adopting, be sure to come in at least 30 minutes prior to closing. We are not open on major holidays and we do post when we will be closed on our Facebook @animalscmpd, Twitter @CMPD_ACC and Instagram @animalscmpd
You can only surrender an animal 2 days a week. Sundays from 9 to 11 a.m. and Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
We post our adoptables, lost and found pets in the community, as well as strays in our shelter. The website updates every hour. animals.cmpd.org is the quick way to get to our website.
Talk to a local vet about what shots are needed for your pets. The rabies vaccination is required by law. We offer rabies vaccinations on the 2nd Saturday of each month. The hours have changed slightly so learn more here: https://charlottenc.gov/AnimalsCMPD/PetServices/Pages/RabiesVaccination.aspx The Humane Society of Charlotte also offers low-cost shots and other services on Wednesdays. Food, water, and shelter are required by law as well. To know what kind of food to give, consult a veterinarian.
The rabies clinic is on the 2nd Saturday of each month. The hours have changed slightly so learn more here: https://charlottenc.gov/AnimalsCMPD/PetServices/Pages/RabiesVaccination.aspx

When you see our adoptables, best thing to do is check the website first. If you don't see them, you can call 311 to find out where they may be. They could have been adopted or transferred to a partner rescue group.
When taking a look at our adoptable pets, always check our website at animals.cmpd.org first to see if they are listed. If not, you can call 311 to see where they may be located. They could have been adopted or transferred to a partner rescue.
We are a municipal shelter for the City of Charlotte. We must take in every animal that walks in our door no matter how full or empty we may be at that time. This means that we cannot guarantee that your pet will make it to adoption but we do everything in our power to get them to adoption if they are safe and healthy. Even pets with medical issues can make it to adoption if we can treat them. We also call upon our partner rescues before we consider euthanasia on anything that comes in.
You can, but a better bet is to go to the Humane Society on Toomey Ave. They are a no kill shelter. Also advertise the pet first. I'm sure someone would give your dog a good home. Dogs are expensive from breeders and finding a good one for free would really be a blessing to someone.
Thank you for adopting! If you still have him you can send us a private message on our Facebook page @animalscmpd with his ID number and we can try to give you any background we might have. If he was a stray coming in to us, then we likely don't have much info on him. We'd love to hear about how he is doing in his new home.
We do offer 2nd Saturday rabies vaccines and microchips. Those are the only shot we can provide. Learn more at https://charlottenc.gov/AnimalsCMPD/PetServices/Pages/RabiesVaccination.aspx
We do provide those type of services but we do offer 2nd Saturday rabies and microchip clinics. https://charlottenc.gov/AnimalsCMPD/PetServices/Pages/RabiesVaccination.aspx
We do pick up stray animals. Call 311 if you find another stray dog.
I'd check with the North Carolina Siberian husky rescue organization. Believe it or not there is such a group that dedicate themselves to rescuing that breed, fostering them until a loving permanent home can be found.
You can learn more about our owner surrender times and days here: https://charlottenc.gov/AnimalsCMPD/PetServices/Pages/OwnerSurrender.aspx
They do free rabies shots the 2nd Saturday of every month I believe. Must be a resident of Charlotte/ Mecklenburg
If Aster isn't at the animal shelter, there's a chance the dog was transferred to another organization: the Human society, a foster family or rescue group. Animal control keeps records so you should be able to find out. If you call, it's best if you have the anilmal ID # or go in person to learn more. Midday the lines are shortest. They get slammed when they open and near closing time. Good luck finding Aster!! She'll be worth the time you take to find her♡
Try harbor Baptist Church they have a food pantry that includes pet dog and cat food. Most food pantries do now. Where are you located? What kind of dog is he? Send your info to me and I will try to help if I can. Utica Williams on facebook.
Apologies for a late reply. If you are not currently a nursery volunteer and are still interested, we always need volunteers to help with the kittens. Get started here. https://charlottenc.gov/AnimalsCMPD/volunteer/Pages/Foster.aspx
