AZA accredited zoos (Like the Lincoln Park Zoo) have a requirement for their animal habitats that the animals are freely allowed to go outside where they be be viewed by guests, or they have private spaces inside where they can retreat to. Most zoos try to place much of their enrichment and treats outside to make that space more appealing, but ultimately, it is up to the animals behavior on any given day. Especially if it is a hot, dry day, they may prefer to be inside where there is more shade, possibly cooler air, and such

Both the 151 (Sheridan) and 156 (LaSalle) stop right by the zoo. It just depends where you are downtown (151 runs up Michigan Avenue whereas 156 runs up LaSalle Street from the Loop). You can get off on Stockton either at the south end by the Brauer gate, or the next stop at the West (main) gate. Alternatively, you can also take the 22 (Clark) or 36 (Broadway) buses that run up Dearborn Street from the Loop. They both run along Clark Street by the zoo and you can get off at Armitage and walk one block east to the Brauer gate entrance.

There is some parking @ Main gate (but you'd have to be a local & very lucky to get it), round the back is best if you come to main front gate, just follow around fences & you'll find it. There are other parking near by & you could then walk over, 5mins walk max.
The 151 is a nice bus, regular (if this helps), $2.50 per adult, cash, card, no change given.
Opens @ 10am.

There is no Metra stop at Armitage or Clybourn. I believe you both are thinking of the CTA "L" train stops. If you are coming in from the north u will have to take the Metra to Union Station. Once there you take an uber, cab, or multiple trains and buses from there. Its not that convenient from downtown. It would prob save you time and money to just drive Wisconsin.
