Its a great place to walk around in the summer near the lake, and as a free zoo its fantastic. For maximum fun spend the day at Museum of Science and Industry instead, but for free fun, Lincoln Park Zoo and the Lake like North Ave beach can't be beat.

Yes, if you are looking for something for a day, the park is one of your best options. It's pretty in the summer, has the zoo, playground, lots of space to run around or have a picnic and some times they have special events going on. It's also less than a 2 mile walk to the jelly bean and mellininum park.
