By far my worst-ever car rental experience! My expectations as Preferred member were to look-up my car in the phone app and pick it up from the lot, potentially stopping by at the customer service desk for any questions/adjustments. The reality was hugely disappointing: 1. A quick look at my phone app told me I had been assigned "an upgrade" to a 15-passenger Ford Transit, which was actually a far cry from the "Elite SUV" I had reserved and something I don't feel comfortable driving at all with my family of 4. OK, so I had to stop at the customer service desk and quickly clear things up. 2. I was third in line at the Preferred-only line at AVIS LAX, so fairly hopeful I would be in-and-out in no time. Unfortunately, the line was not moving at all and after waiting patiently for 15 mins and all agents idly staring at their monitors, I had to ask what is going on - turned out the computer and logistics system was apparently completely down! I guess someone could have at least told that proactively to all the waiting customers, which at this point were already more than 15. Each car had to be individually searched through the lot with many error-and-correct iterations. 3. I finally got to an agent after about 1 hour wait time, got a confident reassurance that there is no problem and he'll take care of me. Then came the blank leisurely stare at the screen (no rush at all) and offer for Ford Transit or a pick-up truck. I told him I am very uncomfortable driving either of these large vehicles and need an SUV (ANY SUV) to load my family and 4 large suitcases. Another 45 minutes later, the whole line of customers went through, including at least one couple who got a RAV4 SUV, and I got offered a Malibu, which clearly couldn't fit my family and luggage. I saw a Cadillac SUV, which would do the job, but the agent coldly explained that he cannot give it me because it would cost $200 more, completely oblivious that I had been waiting there for 2 hours, still without a car. Extremely infuriating! To preserve sanity and energy for the coming 2-hour drive, I cut my losses and reluctantly accepted the only available option - a pick-up truck. It was a very uncomfortable first-time drive... Before leaving, I requested the name or some ID number of the agent - he mumbled something and just left the customer service floor. The rental receipt he promised is sent to my e-mail also never came. 4. While driving on the I-405 freeway, I suddenly noticed that the gas tank cap is freely hanging out on the side of the truck, so had to pull over and put it on the tank. Does nobody in AVIS even go around the vehicle to look it up? Overall, it was a complete nightmare rental experience, fully unexpected from a company like AVIS. Stuff happens with electronic systems, but the staff at the LAX AVIS Preferred office seemed completely unwilling to show care for the customer needs and the actual reservation I had. Not even the decency to identify themselves. I know AVIS can do better...

never again! we have been waiting over 3 hrs line up for our reservation. too slow. the our malibu is 6200mi new, but too noisy on highways. The workers are friendky, but this spot is too crowded unless you are willing to wait 3 hrs to get your car.

I was assigned a black Nissan Altima, that smelled like old socks, was visibly filthy from a road trip (lots of bugs on it), and was already damaged with the fender detached from the car, with scratches all over. I’ve included photos in this post. When I went back in to the “preferred” office, the employees made it seem as if I was just trying to get into a nicer car or an upgrade by complaining. I literally had to convince an employee to come look at the vehicle before they would switch me out. I spent over 45 min trying to get a vehicle that was actually ready to be rented, and missed an important work meeting. Fortunately, after having to “prove myself”, the employees were willing to help me get into a better conditioned vehicle. There is clearly something wrong with your on-site team that inspects the vehicles and places them back in service… as the original vehicle should have never made it back on the lot.

This was my first time booking with Avis, and it went great!! They gave us a free upgrade to a red mustang 😎 no extra fees, we made sure to return the car with extra gas so we wouldn't get charged. The agents working on location were all very helpful. The customer service on the phone though had no idea what they were talking about. We were trying to ask how much extra we'd be charged if we returned it with less gas, and the guy kept saying 'okay so you'd like to rent a car?' Finally we gave up and talked to them in person. Other than that phone call, it was a great experience!

They should have a line for people who has reservations and a line for people who don’t to be more efficient
Unfortunately whilst ridiculous it's not uncommon
78 shouldn't be a problem. Only a valid license needed to be able to drive at any age.
Supposed to be but not always
There is an Avis shuttle. After you exit from baggage claim. You can across street to a concrete isle between airport and parking deck. There you will see signs for area to wait for shuttles. Safe travels my friend!
With that number, you have to go to the branch
Yes, there is one that passed very often.
You can download Avis app and add your flight information. The app will notify you once your land to the airport. You can also be able to select or change your car. I use the app all the time it is very handy when you have to deal with delay or flight change.
They are quite slow. It took me 30 mins despite the fact that there were just 5-6 people ahead of me in the line and there were over 7-8 counters.
We took the bus. Didn't have a very long wait.
What about the cost for second driver?
Have you tried the Avis app? If you ‘register’ then find your agreement details should be in there? ( I’m only a customer-but that’s where my info was)
Yes, as long as it's a credit card and not a debit card
No one can help
Its a shame Avis did not go the extra mile . Missed opportunity for them to make your experience a positive one.
almost in all
I returned my vehicle on full and got a eighty two dollar charge in gas. I called my credit card company immediately. I took a picture of my gas hand and gas receipt. I advise no one to rent from avis.
There are buses running all over the city but I would suggest texting a Lyft or Uber driver to the rental car lot.
Yes also there is a trash folder you can look there for it.
That's not a helpful answer Linda. If you read my message i clearly stated i have rented before at other offices with debit Mastercard and never an issue. But this office lied to me. Probably were overbooked and used it against me or anyone who had a debit card. I should sue Avis. Because i flew in from another country they ruined my trip.
I'm not sure about that call the customer service number and check with them. You should be able to Google Avis customer service phone number
Avis accepts major credit cards, like visa, Master, discover
Depends on what airport your going to. LAX I would recommend at least 2 hours because of traffic and construction around the airport. Avis LAX is open 24/7 for dropping off your rental car, Thank you for renting from Avis LAX. Please note that if your early for your flight it's better then having to rush and be stressed out about missing your flight.
It can be quite pricey, like over $5/gallon here in LA area
They run every 5 to 10 minutes 24/7 Unless traffic at the airport is bad due to construction, if so please be patient they are working hard to get you to your airline or Rental Center. Welcome to Avis LAX
We changed our date with without any fes
If it can be rented from anywhere in the USA but you will be charged or will have to pay a little more to leave it in another Avis office in CA ok.
You can get picked up and dropped off at visitor parking. The entrance is on Manchester
Without any problem, there are no restrictions
Yes. Also some agencies require you to have a DP driver's permit
I believe yes. Whenever I have rented overseas, I've used my US based license without an issue.
Between 2:30 -3:00. No later than that. The shuttle takes about 10-15 minutes to get there to your terminal. And if you are checking in your bags, give another 15-20 minutes.
Actually, I'm reading various official sites and in California it seems not. Thanks anyway
My friend made it to Terminal 4 in under 30 minutes. Bear in mind it was a light Monday in the early afternoon
No not at all..
Renting AVIS does not require an international driver's license, but is recommended for police checks
I really don't think so. I didn't see a wheelchair lift
You shouldn't need a special license for i.e. a CDL for 12 passengers. If you were planning on 15 or more people, then yes you would need a special commercial drivers license. I would just double-check local and state laws which rental companies should know the answers to. Hope that helps. - Christy
There is a Avis shuttle that passes in front of each terminal. Follow the signs for ground transportation or Rental Shuttles.
No, the shuttle is going to/from the airport only.
Yes
Yes
Call Avis
If the car comes with the user manual check it out, if not try to surf the internet. But probably the most reasonable option it's to call the car rental.
Your French license will be fine. Being under 25 limits the types of vehicles you can rent. Please refer to Avis' website to see which vehicles you are eligible for.
Yes, first stop is preferred
Baggage claim carousel 6 cross street to avis shuttle
The shuttle I was on was wheelchair accessible
I got LT trim when i rented
Ask Avis
10 seater van is not considered "commercial". The answer is : no problem.

With the government shut down, i would sugest having your car returned 3 and a half hours early because you will need to be there 3 hours early to get to your departure terminal..and yes Avis LAX gets busy and they try to make it as quick as possible. But at times it gets challenging.
You can call them for a bus, or use their app to find out if a bus is heading your way already.
If you're driving through the mountains especially with that vehicle with a smaller engine vehicle definitely get the chains. that gives you added grip, especially in the higher elevation regions. Check forecast for the area, definitely get the chains
Yes
They list everything that gets left behind online and slso call you. It id really hard to find a number for them. I left a one dollar pair of glasses in the car and they tracked me down. Aftet going through the lost and found site i finally came up with their phone number.
They charge you one more day
It took about 10 mins. And this was at a VERY busy time.....so the buses were very full.....but they were efficient. It took about 35 mins from the time we turned car in to the time we were at the airport.
Well, Los Angeles is also a huge market as there are days when no stock reaches
You will be charged the additional days. You should always call and let them know you need to extend the rental period too.
All you will news is a valid driver's license from your couuntry.
When you leave the airport after you pick up you luggage, its located between the purple pillars right outside. Avis shuttle buses are red with little white. It's easy to find.
If you have the avis app downloaded on your mobile device/tablet, you can skip all counters inc. the preferred counter and do everything at the touch of your finger from choosing/exchanging your vehicle to selecting additional amenities to returning the vehicle. Otherwise, go to the preferred counter station and look for you name & assigned vehicle on the screen.
If is credit car $0 if is debit $200
Catch the shuttle and the wait was 10 minutes unless there is a line, avis got me in and out no worries
29 June
Shuttle service is extremely low in frequency. Hertz, enterprise and even dollar have a great frequency of busses. There is always a long wait to get your car even at odd hours.
Yes
I know it's on Airport Blvd off Century close to LAX airport. Look out for the " Rental Cars" signs on the street as you drive towards the actual airport and then zero in on "Avis"
Big red bus wait for at the signed car rental areas outside of the terminal building
Ive picked up cars from here regularly and only required my British license. Does make it easier if you sign up for Avis Preferred though.
Also, pre-payment has a $50 cancellation fee (just FYI)
At the outside (away from baggage claim) curb, and they run every few to ten minutes...be on the lookout and flag 'em if you must.
Yes but if you didn't pick it up from LAX there maybe a different return fee price varies per location
I sometimes rent with a debit card; Avis will "hold" $100 (extra) until the vehicle is returned.
As a preferred member you have an option to select from selected cars if you don't like the one assigned. Their fleet is so large, if they have one available, I'm sure they'll upgrade you. The staff are wonderful and everything worked smoothly. I selected a different car, only to switch back to my original car. Also they have great car options... one guy was renting a Porsche!
Anyone can hop on board
We rented a car now in february - they said that all vehicles are with All Weather Tires. It is not allowed to use chains on rental cars (otherwise your insurance is not valid). We were driving to colder aerias and there was snow/icy roads sometimes, it was still ok. Of course you cannot drive where chains are needed...
Ask at the counter. You might need to pay a daily fee. Sometimes the car will be equipped with one.
My credit card covers the rental car insurance as a 'perk' so i save quite a bit skipping the ldw.
That would be a question for Avis but it should not be a problem.
No they require you have a credit card or debit card. However with the debit card they take a significantly larger amount out immediately when you pick up the vehicle as a deposit. Some avis locations will only take debit cards from out of state licensed drivers not sure why this.... Also if you make a reservation over the phone or online be sure to call the actual location to confirm and to get any additional info. because for some reason the two dont communicate at all with one another and what one says doesn't seem to ever be what the other one says so just a heads up get clarification and always ask who you are speaking to. Good luck.
Yeah. Just ask any LAX employe where the shuttle picks you up at LAX arrivals. Make sure you get into the Avis shuttle
You can book through costco if you have a membership for a good price..
I would give them a phone call
Yes you can it will need to have a credit card logo on it, like visa or MasterCard
