If you're driving through the mountains especially with that vehicle with a smaller engine vehicle definitely get the chains. that gives you added grip, especially in the higher elevation regions. Check forecast for the area, definitely get the chains

When you get to a certain elevation, chains on your tires are required if you don't have winter tires on the car. We once drove from LA up to Lake Arrowhead and it was above freezing. A week later a big snow storm had blown through. We had to go to the local auto supply store and buy chains and get them put on to go down the mountain. Then when we were far enough down that it was above freezing, we pulled over and took them off. I'm sure Avis doesn't provide chains or winter tires in LA. It would be worth contacting them to see if you have any alternatives. Good luck!

Are the chains free within the rental agreement ?
