Steam Ship

Sorry ! Very sad to say - seems this historical imminent important ship cannot be rescued any more.

I absolutely love this beautiful and historical ship. Someone needs to take control and turn this into a hotel and casino/shopping destination before it rots away to nothing. The ship holds records for fastest transatlantic crossing and doesn't deserve to be in this condition. I wish that I had the money, because I would definitely restore it. Edit: Norwegian supposedly purchased the ship a while back, but it still sits rusting away. Sad to see her in this condition. If I ever win the Powerball big money I'm going to purchase her and transform into a partial hotel with shops and restaurants for everyone. "If you build it, they will come".

Inspired by the service of the British liners Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth, which transported hundreds of thousands of US troops to Europe during World War II, the US government sponsored the construction of a large and fast merchant vessel that would be capable of transporting large numbers of soldiers. Designed by American naval architect and marine engineer William Francis Gibbs (1886–1967), the liner's construction was a joint effort by the United States Navy and United States Lines. The US government underwrote $50 million of the $78 million construction cost, with the ship's prospective operators, United States Lines, contributing the remaining $28 million. In exchange, the ship was designed to be easily converted in times of war to a troopship. The ship has a capacity of 15,000 troops, and could also be converted to a hospital ship.

Sad This is Our History
I have read that if you donate at least $1,000.00 to the SS United States Conservancy then they will give you a tour. Go on Facebook and look up SS United States Conservancy, give the page a like, and then send them a message. Edit: I would also like to add that it costs them $90,000.00 a month just to keep the ship from being scrapped so your $1,000 would definitely help towards that!
That's what we're after
This ship is faster then all Olympic class ships.
No it has been gutted for asbestos removal and never redone it is a shame
It was all my son wanted to see.
We can only pray that somebody wises up and put some money into it
We saw it sitting, docked, and looking in very poor shape last evening. Sept 1, 2022. No tours or even a way to get to it except to go past it on a boat.
Nothing, I think. Its disgusting that a national treasure like the Big U is being left to rot when we burn so much money elsewhere. They could easily afford to polish her up and repurpose her.
There ARE still rooms throughout the ship, many are just gutted shells now but check out the picture of the movie theater my brother took on a special reservation only tour he participated in just 3 weeks ago --- look at my review pictures and the movie theater is still fairly intact! That's a PERSONAL picture, NOT an internet image! So are ALL my review pictures!
Well I am going to say no if they use my idea which is to use a 3D printer and print out the same parts for the SS United States then there will be no problems
it was bought by some Philly society
I work at pier 80 right next to her I love this ship hopefully 1 day they restore her
It took 3 days, 12 hours and 12 minutes
I believe that it is
They had a few buyers it was to go to new york a few yrs ago but fell thru. The man that owns it is trying everything he can to save it for its historical value. It still holds the record for the fastest trip across the atlantic.
No I don't think so there is a lot to it go on Google and read the story to it there is a lot of interesting things about it
Nope not for now is just sitting there getting worse and worse every day they should fix it up and make like a Museum in there that will be kool
Restoring United States would be a better investment, regardless of the cost. She's a genuine piece of transatlantic history, the fastest ocean liner ever built, and believe me, she'll clean up nice. I think if some multi-billionaire bought her and had her restored to original, fully operational condition, they would get their investment back in positive publicity.
No it is not. Unfortunately it is still waiting for a big overhaul.
I haven't heard anything more since the last talk by the Conservancy to contract with a group specializing in retro fitting old ships for repurposing them as floating something or others? The S.S.United States is most definitely not seaworthy in any remotely dreamable way & likely will never be again. Last May my brother & sister took a reservation only private tour of the ship along with past passengers & families of the past crews. And while much of the ship is now dismantled & many rooms within left as only hollow shells, it is by NO means completely gutted despite many posts to the contrary. I have personal pictures posted under my personal review here from less than a year ago showing the movie theater still intact & much of the ship still intact but just empty. The engine room still has it's massive boilers & gear housing motorworks. Unusable to be sure, yet still there. You can still see the markings on the top deck outside where shuffleboard was played. Sad...
The Conservancy recently signed a contract with a real estate company to do a feasibility study of various scenarios. Last summer I had the opportunity of touring this Great Ship, what an experience, even tough the interior had been stripped. Still a Grand Ole Gal!!!
It would be great if you could dry doc the u.s. United States, paint the hull , repair the weak spots and make the ship seaworthy , if not the engine, but it still would cost Millions and you probably can't afford that, but all in all, she is a beautiful ship
Translation?
That would be a great idea and that was thought of but it would cost entirely too much money to redo
The Conservancy has a donation table where a contribution amount for the Captain's Quarters level allows you the possibility of a potential future tour IF one becomes available... a big IF!--- BUT... if you check out my review posting you'll see pictures taken on a special reservation only tour my brother & sister went on just this past Memorial Day weekend. It included past passengers & families of the Captain & Crew! And regardless of the terrible deterioration of the ship & its internal rooms in various states of disarray, there's still much remaining intact albeit showing alot of uncared for age!!! Engine room, movie theater, pool, - all still there! A walk through the dusty promenade deck is still possible! Outlines of the shuffleboard & golf tees can still be made out through all the deterioration! And this was only a few months ago! Sooooo... I don't think anyone can promise you a tour --- but tours HAVE been given!!! RECENTLY!!!
I think we all should start a petition and take it to the US Senate and see what happens
Absolutely not i work right next to it see it everyday im working seems like its going to waste costs about 90,000 to keep it docked there everyday thats all i know reminds u of a titanic type of ship i could be wrong im just saying.
Thanks for your quick response! If you go on the Conservancy website they state specifically that a donation at the Captain & Quarters level rewards you with a POTENTIAL tour --- my brother & sister just took a tour this past Memorial Day weekend & although the ship is in quite bad condition, it's still very impressive to tour & it most definitely ISN'T completely gutted!
Check out my previous q&a responses --- my brother & sister recently went on a special reservation only tour (I'm not sure how they arranged it... I don't believe they had to donate a bunch of $... perhaps there is a website aavailable by the foundation that cares for it...) - anyway, people on the tour included former passengers & families of the original Captain & Crew. The tour was quite extensive & included access to much of the interior & exterior (engine room, crowsnest, promenade deck, tennis & shuffleboard areas,& movie theater) - please don't take any answers telling you there's no tours available or that the ship is completely gutted or too derelict to safe ok? Take a look at my pictures included with my review... those are NOT internet or website pictures... they are ACTUAL personal pictures taken this past Memorial Day weekend while ACTUALLY touring the S.S.United States! So don't give up researching possible opportunities ok? Good luck!
I can't answer your particular question as to Bremerhaven to NYC but I know when I sailed from Southampton,England to NYC in 1967 the voyage took 5 days!
Norwegian Cruise Lines purchased the ship in early 2000s. The economy turned, NCL lost interest, and they sold her to the conservancy. Crystal Cruise Lines looked at her a few years ago but after an extended study they determined it would cost too much to retrofit and re-engine her as a cruise ship. It seems the most we can hope for is some sort of mixed use / hotel / convention cebter
Again, please see my previous answers --- special reservation only tours ARE available --- I KNOW this for a FACT because my brother participated in one just 3 weeks ago! See my review pictures!
No but they have a donation going on to keep her where she's at and decide what they going to do with it
That really nice then you should go down and take a look , they are not giving tour but they do have a salvage group that you might be able to assist you
Would be nice to see her be set up like the Queen Mary is in Long Beach California, at least The SS United States is an All American ship not some English Ship🛳️🛳️🚢
And once AGAIN, please see my previous answers because special reservation only tours ARE available --- I KNOW this for a FACT because my brother recently participated in one just 3 weeks ago! See my review pictures ...
Not exactly sure but the boilers & condenser reduction units are HUGE!!! Just ONE propeller weighs 62000 lbs!!!
That would be Awesome,Yes thats what the Conservancy is working towards, please donate to save her
I was there a few months ago and it's just tide to the dock that's where it has been for years now
