I'm not sure how this business has 4 stars. I have made a phone consultation twice and they NEVER call you back. After calling them and leaving a voicemail, asking what is going on, Charles decides to call and leave a text saying he's returning my call 2 hours after the scheduled appointment. Completely unprofessional and I think that's a testament to what kind of lawyer he is/will be (absent).

Charles Drennen was able to get me more than enough time. About 3 months maybe more. Went to him last minute and he assisted with my case. I called him I believe the same day I had court and he went to represent me. His prices were fair and he was very knowledgeable. This is not my first time using this law firm. I highly recommend this law firm!
No he can't if im mistaking its has to be a 5 day notice follow by a 30 day notice and its not like ur behind in rent just late but u can always follow up with a tenant right lawyer and if ur in Chicago Charles drennan is a good lawyer
Hi, this is my first time renting in the City of Chicago. I do not want to resign my lease because I prefer month to month. Can the leasing agency force me to re-sign my lease? If not, can they post the unit and limit my opportunity time for moving?

Yes. Once you are outside your lease, the owner only needs to give you a 30 Day Notice to vacate.
My landlord refuses to get the mold out me and my son 7 y/o bedroom. I called the city. Do I have to leave the apartment if I have proof that he don’t want to fix it. Should I take him to court ?

Chicago Tenants Rights Law | Oct 11, 2019
Hi Calvin, I’m so sorry your health has been compromised in this way. Have you gotten the city to confirm the mold? We can help you break your lease. If you feel your landlord has been aggregiously negligent, we can help you sue him - but often these cases take a lot of time and energy and patience. We charge between $200-400 for these cases at the outset to get some work started, but the consultation is free. Come in any time.
Are there any laws against not paying rent due to serious repairs that need to be done such as; sewage has been found in the crawlspace under the house. Due to the smell/toxic air, I am unble to live in the house full time until fixed.

you cant withold rent due to unlivable conditions and continue to stay there. you would be better taking the money and finding a new place. the courts will say if it's that unbearable then why are you still staying there???
I am a Section 8 tenant in Chicago, Illinois.
And I need to know if I can legally and without threat of eviction hold my rent for repairs needing to be done in my apartment?

Chicago Tenants Rights Law | Oct 10, 2020
If you live in Chicago, you are under the RLTO. If you need help understanding how to withhold, please call us.
You can sue him for damages if you want. First, ask him if he’s aware that he’s been doing that. You can write a letter if you wish; if he doesn’t respond or if you don’t trust him, you may come in for a free consultation about your options. There is a YouTube video on our website under “In the News” about suing landlords.
Great question. Many people are misled about withholding laws. In Chicago, the law allows for legally withholding of rent – but only after following very specific rules! You can look up the RLTO and follow the directions in the city code, or we can do it for you. We do charge for our work but if you want to do it yourself, be very certain to follow the laws in writing and with certified letters!

Short answer is yes, but look at your lease. The terms should be enumerated there.

Hi, we are so sorry that you are experiencing this! We get a lot of calls about noisy neighbors and the lot is pretty and big US on this – Chicago’s municipal codes provide that neighbors should live among each other and peaceful habitability and enjoyment Hi, we are so sorry that you are experiencing this! We get a lot of calls about noisy neighbors and the lot is pretty and big US on this – Chicago’s municipal codes provide that neighbors should live among each other and “peaceful habitability and enjoyment,” which is, of course, I relative term. If you want us to help you draft a letter to your landlord asking him to intervene, we could do so – but understand that we cannot make your landlord do anything. If threatening letter from a lawyer often helps, but because the law is relative, it’s tricky. If I were you, I would write a polite letter siding the laws and hang back to see what he does. We do charge for our work, so start by writing your own letter and see if that helps.

Hi, Ms. Lee:
Do you have a lease? If you have a current lease that has not lapsed into month-to-month status, your rent is locked at the rate for which you signed your lease.
However, we don’t have rent control in the city of Chicago. That means that your landlord or management company are legally alllowed to raise the rents. After all, property taxes they pay can also be raised every year as well. The walkthrough is a typical way of assessing fair market value and the condition of your home - I can’t speak to the personalities involved, but this kind of assessment is not personal and is something landlords and management companies should do occasionally to take care of their properties.
That said, you should always be given 48 hours of notice before they enter your apartment and it is illegal for them to enter your apartment without your knowledge or consent except in the case of an emergency. You are also legally required to grant them access for maintenance.
No he can't do that the sheriff have to put you out you have to go to court first cpd can't do nothing if it's non criminal cpd can't do nothing call tenant rights now they will help you call today.
I never been late on my Rent and all of a sudden my job hasn't paid me and I'm late on paying.and all of a sudden my landlord took the only thing I had for rent while I got paid and told me to get out in five days with my kids .Can they?
I've been living in my building for 7 years now and my landlord sold the property. I was paying $1000.00 a month for rent. The new owner is saying if I want to stay the rent will increase to $1500.00. Is that even legal to raise the rent by so much?
Pablo Gonzalez | Oct 10, 2021
Machelle Latrice Davis | Oct 10, 2021
Of course it is. Illinois does not have a rent control law in which a landlord or owner can at any time (if there is no binding agreement) increase your rent.

I would say no she not behind in her rent and she has not cause damage these are money hungry people all they only think of.them selves get a lawyer quick
No he cannot. It's against the law for a landlord to evict you. Only a judge can order an eviction. Landlords cannot force you out, change locks or stop utilities either. That's against the law. If your landlord served you an eviction notice, call the police right away.
I agree with Damian. A landlord must give 24hr notice to enter your unit and unless the leaking toliet was flooding or causing damages. And they must have made attempts to contact you before entry. However I also advise for you to call Chicago tenant rights immediately

I have never heard of this , so. I cant answer that. I mean if the apartment needs to be touched up or fullu painted you can ask him to do it or ask if you can buy the paint an do it yourself an have it taken off the rent. Good luck
