A really great place to learn about monarchs. Don't get to see many butterflies here in September but it was nice. We did see one butterfly on the ground that was beautiful!
Shawn Slauson
Only saw one butterfly when I was there. I walked around for a half hour before asking someone where all the butterflies were and they told me they are only there in November.

A nice, leisurely walk along the dunes with easy access to Grove beach. We'll need to come back during the butterfly season.

Pismo State Beach Campground and the Monarch Grove are open to pedestrians only. The nearest facilities are at the ocean end of Grand Avenue. At this time, Sep 2020, it is unclear as to when the campground will open for camping ànd the Monarch Grove will be staffed with Docents.
Depending on the seasonal variations yes you might catch a big array of butterflies especially since californias fires, slowed the migration down.I hope your family vacation is fun either way..
I think they've left by now unfortunately, but the area is beautiful so it might not hurt to go and see and walk the beach
Yesterday we could sight some of the remaining Monarch Butterflies, so it is likely that you will get to see a few of them until mid-March
Across the street is the best place to park. Drive straight to the Monarch Butterfly Grove and then you will find a parking spot on one of the sides. Very easy
No reservations needed! Free and open to public! Bring your binoculars or a long lens for a better look at the butterflies.
No.i have nothing to do with it
August through October there was a few around
I visited last week. There were some butterflies but the majority that create the large clusters huddled together are there in Nov. The volunteer told me that Thanksgiving week was the best time to visit especially due to the warmer weather as of late.
Yes
No the best was October thru February
Late October to February is the best time to go
The butterflies should be there through the end of this month (Feb.).
Best time to visit is late October to mid February. Yes you should be able to see some Butterflies
Nikki Ortega answer is correct
We were there last week. Didn't see even one.
No not till November is when they start to arrive in the Grove hopefully we see more than last yr as of spring of this year only 23,000 were counted due to decline of the monarchs.. for sine reason their not eating milkweed so it's really sad because that's all they eat and lay there eggs on.. hopefully we can get this figured out real soon or we will no longer be able yo enjoy them I'm a Inaturalist for national geographic I count and raise monarch thos spring I had 5 monarchs last yr I had about 50
Go to the California State Parks website, and select Pismo Beach Campgrounds.
I've seen people ride their bikes...push their strollers nd all...
Not really. They migrate in March. They'll start returning in Sept to overwinter. Best time to see them in clusters and numbers is Nov and Dec.
In spring branches were full. I think those little guys flew to Mexico... wouldn't you vacation the same...lol
Late October thru February is when you'll see the masses. It is still a beautiful and serene place to visit any time of year.
Always open, but docents may or not be there. The season is Nov through Feb. 😊
I'm there often, family lives around the corner, I ALWAYS walk my dogs through there no problem👍
Went on Valentine's weekend. We saw a few and they told us there were only 188 at peak this year.
Sorry we have not. Would suggest you call to find out. Google it to get the number
We were there at the end of October and we only saw a few. Last year the trees were loaded.
I was there this past weekend and didn't notice an abundance. It was one here and there. I certainly was expecting to see more.
True ..there are not as many as this time last year
There are a few, they're just starting to arrive. Peak season is Thanksgiving through Valentine's Day.
Sweetie, northern CA is on fire. Will it effect the area? Yes it will. But the park is on the ocean....so maybe breeze will remove smoke. It was not Smokey a few weeks ago when we were there, I'll recommend find restaurant on the ocean...FINS Restaurant
They tend to arrive in November and last until feburary. You can usually see alot around christmas.
I think i remember seeing on their board at the garden that they come in September. Just didnt say early or late
Can I see them mid September? I want to take my young sister for her birthday on the 21 wondering if I will be able to see the butterflies?
Likely pretty.much gone for the winter season.
We went a few weeks ago and there were barely any butterflies left
3000? Did you count them? Lmao
Not sure if you can do that online. The guides at the Grove give that kind of info. But I can't recall what they told us.
Yes. They have great trails
It's free to go see the beautiful 🦋 and the 🌲
Same as above response not many there.
You wo t see much around this time. Give it a few months
It was pretty warm yesterday. Don't know about today but it looks to be the same
We were a month to early to see the swarms of butterflies. There were not a one.
You can not camp ayi.
October to February. Nov and dec seem to have alot more butterflies
Yes
They are not here now. Around October I believe to the end March is .The best time to go is around Valentine's Day as long as it's a clear day not raining or foggy.
No. We were also just there visiting yesterday, nothing.
Won't see much now as the season is at an end. They are usually there from November through February, maybe middle March at latest.
Depending on where you are in Santa Maria it is about 20 minutes away.
Unfortunately, the Monarch Butterfly Grove is closed for the season. You can still go there but there is no docent and very few if any butterflies left. They don't all fly away at once but slowly leave over a. Of weeks on their journey to Canada.
There were very few butterflies left in that area last week
It's protected by the state it's a national park.
They were a few weeks ago...some you had to see through a telescope. They were up inside and at the top of the trees. You can still get a pic with your phone
They thin out in February the best viewing time is around New year's. You will still see some but not as many
It would be wonderful. It's romance time for the Monarchs.
There are a few left. They will congregate in the rain and it will be harder to see, but theIr still there.
I was there on the 20th and they were still at the good amount of good amount of them it's better to go when there is warm weather because they're actually active so try to make sure it's a sunny day otherwise they just sit in the trees on a cold overcast day
It's a public park and free. Worth walking around. It's next to the sand dunes beach so you can combine both.
You have a lot of options. There are dozens of hotels and restaurants in 5 miles either direction. Check out Zorro's Cafe for great Mexican. For hotels, we stayed at The Cliffs hotel and spa.
When it's warm and the sun is shining. The butterflies aren't active when it's cold.
As Rustics says there is a row of porta potties but it also butts up against a campsite that has actual bathrooms. They were all gated off when I was there a few weeks ago but they might be open now.
The grove will be open, but the guides may not be there those days, and the mobile store likely wont be open.
Right now is a great time!
There are trails behind the grove and over the small bridge that go quite a distance to the water.
It's open all year round. But you will find butterflies from October end and November
Yes it's open during the day and they are just starting to show up but in around a month they will be abundant.
Yes from what I hear. I went to early in the season to see them.
I beleive January is.....
3/31/18 There are maybe 300 or so left at the Grove. There was 14,000 at the peak in Dec & early Jan. Monarch butterfly overwintering season is from mid October thru the end of February. Then they head back North East
North Beach Campground. Pismo State Beach.
Possibly. If it stays cold. The mentor said that they start migrating at the eed of February and first part of March. Depends on weather.
When we visited a couple of weeks back, their count was at around 2,000 which was the lowest of the season. One of the staff members mentioned that the peak was around Thanksgiving at about 14,000.
No, the 101 is not open. Take the 5 to get back to the 101.
Not sure. The count was 14,000 last weekend.
It is FREE to see the Monarch Butterflies AND they have telescopes set up for an even better view which is also FREE
This place is technically always open. The guides may not be there and the telescopes won't be up, but you are free to walk around a view the butterflys yourself.
I live one block away from the grove and am there often. It's impressive right now (15000 last estimate from the volunteers) and The numbers should just just get better when you're here. Good timing Ketty!
There may not be volunteers there but it is open always. The butterflies will be there.
