Totally thought I might have been overreacting in thinking we were being racially profiled today during the cat adoption process, but reading the earlier reviews confirms what I previously thought. Came in for my mother to adopt an adult cat as a companion. These are usually the cats that are harder to find homes for because everyone wants the kittens. My mother specifically wanted an adult cat because they would be low energy and more settled. We filled out the application and were told the process would take about an hour. After over an hour of waiting, we were told we were being denied because 1) Our previous cats died at 13 years old and that was too young for cats to die (multiple Google sources say otherwise) and 2) Because my mother could not remember the number of her vet, they could not confirm that she previously took her cats to the vet. This was all information that was reviewed with a manager prior to our hour + wait, and there were no indications that this would be an issue. Additionally, I saw other families who were in the same part of the process being treated with warm smiles and being told how lucky their pets were going to be to go home with them. We have been life long cat owners and have always adopted. I get being absolutely certain that the pets are going to be well cared for, but this felt biased on multiple levels. Super disappointed in this experience and plan on making it known to others who are looking to adopt from North Shore.

When I purchase anything I always check reviews. I go to the least positive reviews because that tells me a lot more about the company/organization than the positive reviews. I already had my suspicions about this organization. And how could it be a nonprofit when they make a profit? I would recommend just going over the negative reviews before even reading the positives. They are usually very telling!

Really poor experience. I grew up wanting to adopt from NSALA, however my experience after I finally did was very alarming. I chose my pup and found out she had to have her spay and a umbilical hernia surgery before picking her up (fine). One the day I was supposed to pick her up I was told I would be sent home with meds an e-collar and anything else needed related to the surgery and new adoption. The day of, I arrived early and it seemed like no one had any idea what I was talking about when I informed them I was here to pick up my rescue. It took a total of three hours to get my pup and get out from the time I walked in (also fine, could have been worse I guess). Now, I’m on my way home, I live FAR from the shelter. I realize I was never given any medication or e-collar. I call and someone verifies I should have been sent with antibiotics and painkillers. Then I receive another call saying she doesn’t need it. The next day I receive a call to check on her, I told them one of the incisions are getting enflamed and she won’t stop licking it, they said they would call in meds to a local pharmacy for me (never happens). Finally by the third day I had to take her to emergency because one wound was completely opened and was getting infected, and after $400 more dollars I finally got the necessary meds and equipment to care for her. Still no response from NSALA, and will likely never recommend this shelter.

I went and FELL IN LOVE with a puppy there. Made an immediate connection to the point where everyone at the place was cheering for us saying “you have to take her!” It was an immediate bond. We confirmed that she had NO living restrictions (meaning she could live anywhere). They were well aware I live in manhattan in a beautiful co-op pet friendly building with a private backyard in a quaint neighborhood and were fine with that. Upon completing the adoption papers and being eager to take the puppy home, a woman came out and said “are you the one adopting this puppy?” I said yes and she responds “well you can’t. There are other dogs but we would like someone with a backyard.” I told her I have a private backyard. She did not care and insisted I could not have the dog I fell in love with. I even had my four year old niece with me who was HEART BROKEN. Wouldn’t bring my kids here. They were cold, unsympathetic, made it impossible to adopt a dog. This shelter seems to be run more as a business and not an adoption center. There is a lack of compassion here. I asked the woman “wouldn’t it be better the dog be adopted and have a nice home with me than a cage” and she responded “the dog has been here for a week, I’m sure someone else will want her.” After all this, they called me 10 minutes later asking if I wanted to have my application processed in case I want another dog. I said “due to my experience, especially with a rude unsympathetic employee, I do not wish to adopt at your center” the woman said “okay, bye” no apologies, no sympathy, nothing. I am heart broken.

Well if you can’t afford to adopt a dog I’m not rich but I am blessed and I have a 95-year-old father I will personally take you to North shore if you live in New York for you to pick out a dog which I will purchase for you
How old is the dog
That is very sad that you won’t take in your moms cat. You should
If for vet services I believe they accept a form of credit for animal care. You'll need to apply for that credit.
North shore animals try to work with people call and asl if they have senior fares. A lot of people do. Benefield medical does give discounts. M 998 HMMWV if u adopt they give u the food and medical. U pay for ur own supplies when you bring your forever baby home
Yes , a no kill shelter I adopted my terrier from here 13 years ago. She's my old lady now.
I live in TN and a great org that help me is PEOPLE FOR ANIMALS. I live on a farm and cats are dumped or show up. They have helped me fix them, but I have to save for shots and FOOD. IT'S easier to find homes after they are fixed. Five have been (free) adopted into safe loving homes. I am still feeding/loving 15 cats (all rescued and fixed. Good luck.
Hello. I'm on my way in a bit to northshore animal league and came across your post. I'm sorry about your health and hope and pray you get stronger everyday. Have you found a home for your beagle? Rt now I have a a beagle/hound mix. Adopted him about 1yr and 6mts ago. Wanted to get another dog for us and company for my dog. Hes rarely ever home alone, as I'm a stay at home mom. (My youngest us 13) but he loves to play so much that I think a friend for him would do him some good.
Yes they have an onsite Veternarian, but you need to make an appointment. Their rates are very fair
To answer your question I paid less. I guess it depends on the size and the breed . I adopted chihuahuas. It was a Donation $100
Call or go online and fill out volunteer form. It's pretty easy.
I don’t think they do that. I think you have to find a shelter near you that you find affordable or good
Hi, thank you! You can visit us in person or mail us any donations - we appreciate any help we can get.
Dwclawing is no longer recommended. Always have a scratching post. This helps them to go only in one place. Call them and they will let you know.
If you go to their website, they have a link to a service called SpayUSA. They help with finding and giving referrals to low-cost spay/neuter services using your zip code
They probably do, but not sure. Canned food is most likely as it definitely hasn't been tampered with, followed by unopened tamper-resistant bags. They may not take open, partially used bags. You can contact them directly.
Sorry ,I personally don't know but you can call them They are going to help you
Mary Ann, I am not sure what percentage of donations goes directly to caring for the animals but I will look into that for you. I am certain that everyone who works at North Shore Animal League does it based on their love and wish to care for dogs and cats who needed their love and assistance. I don't believe they are a bunch of overpaid people who don't care, everyone there cares and loves every animal. I worked there 30 years ago and was amazed by the number of donations and the amounts of money donated. They started with a small house and have grown to several buildings used to treat the animals. I will ask and see if I can get you an answer by mid February.
I'm not sure. Great place to go..I got 2 of my dogs there.best dogs ever..good luck 🐶
Two white-haired Australian labradoddles
Call and ask but know they have odd hours and days..
Proof of address, and form of ID. If you rent the place, you might need to bring your lease which states you are allowed to have pets. Also, you must pay $350.
Yes check there website Medical staff is great I use them for regular checkups too
Yes, they even except Care Credit.
No, unfortunately we're not able to board dogs. Our compund is not big enough. Maybe sometime in the future.
They are a no kill shelter.
Yes Pat is right. When i adopted my dog, we gave them the adoption fee which included spaying, uo to date vaccines. They did speak to everyone inthe house concerning her. It's been ten years since. You also can goback for vaccines, pet training.
Call them and ask about their volunteer opportunities :)
It depends on where you go. I'm not sure how much North Shore charges. Lefferts blvd vet charged $240 for cremation of my cat. I had her given back to me in a beautiful wooden box urn with name plate.
North shore animal league is your best shot although I do recommend keeping an open mind when going there. But they have alot of pits. Good luck
No they are not a scam. They are selective about who they adopt to as they take good care of all their animals; they will even offer you cheaper vet services if you want to use them. If you have never had a pet (or not had one for many years) it will be a lot of questions. Just be patient. There are a lot of caring people that work there.
Yes they have vet services & host of other services
Agree, had both my dogs neutered at NSAL. Great service!
They might, the Aspca has spay/neuter bus that only charges $25 or free if on public assistance. North Shore neuter Ferals for $35, not sure what they will do for pets, give them a call.
Yes they do, but check with landlord first it may depend on the size of the dog and how loud it may be.
Just walk in! Most of the time the staff is very friendly. I wouldn't go just as they open, or right when they're closing because they're very busy with the animals. I have been adopting there for 40 years. Will never go anywhere else.
Call them and ask.
I'm not sure but you can try Petco. They may sell or let you adopt Rabbits.
My family has adopted several dog's from North Shore and through all the years we've never had a visit from them.
Honestly I'm not sure, but I know on their website they have detailed information about fostering.
No appt necessary but call for hours when they are open. You can look at all the kitties and pet them too. They are happy kitties
No. It's your responsibility. I had it done for free at a Nassau county free rabies shot event. (It was supposed to cost $25.)
Call them to see if they have space available or any other rescue/ no kill shelter.
No. The charge is about $65 per visit. If you pet needs any additional testing there are other charges. It can be costly.
They are open 10-6 usually, holiday hours might differ. No appointments needed, you can walk right in. If you do find what you're looking for, unless it's near closing time, paperwork is done on same day.
I have never heard of a hypoallergenic cat except the one that is hairless. Your friend needs allergy testing and should know the extent of allergy before taking an animal into the home and then developing asthma. The animal league won't give an animal if there is risk the animal would have to be returned or given away. Dogs on the other hand , do have hypoallergenic breeds which don't shed. Look them up on the Internet to have a basic knowledge of appropriate breeds that are suitable. There is a wealth of information out there. Poodles are the most common.
How do you adopt a dog then return it Dogs are not furniture to be returned
I don't work here but you can contact them. Also try the Arizona Animal Welfare League they are a no kill shelter.
Or you can try Arizona Animal Welfare League, they have a clinic there.
Also if you live in an apartment or condo you need the management info. If you had a previous pet you need the vets information as well.
The north shore animal league is a not kill shelter, also I know about scarny second chance animal rescue
I would call them and ask
Because we can close the windows, 😂😂, or u have to use close your balcony by using plastic net😆
North Shore Animal League has plenty of dogs looking for a home.
So sorry to hear that! Take the long island railroad to port Washington and it's no more than a 10 min walk from the train station.
You call or check there website
It is located at 16 Lewyt Street, Port Washington New York
Unsuitable home life or finances
You better call
Yes
Call them.
Yes all have from north sure animal league They both lived to be 16 & 15.
I don't know depends on how bad ur situation is
North Shore Animal League is open on appointment basis. From the website, you can click adoption inquiry form link and someone will contact you for an appointment.
4 pm
Call them and tell them what your looking to do.
Call them and ask to make an appointment. Lots of shelters are closed to the public, but they will allow you to view animals by appointment only.
Yes
Call and find out
Call North Shore..if they can't take it, ask them where else they would recommend. Don't abandon your dog! Also, look up "no kill shelters on Long Island".
Um adult dogs are usually $100, 6month and under puppies are $350, rescue puppies are $250. Now pedigrees and small breeds are $250. It will take most of the day to adopt, they are careful as to the adopters. They need to make sure you can adopt, if you're not the homeowner they will contact them for approval. Make sure you ask about any instances of biting. They recently had some issues. I'm not sure what happened but I have adopted from them over 20 years and have never had an issue. Anytime you accept a rescue there is no guarantee of the breeding. They try to be careful but instances do occur. Good luck and enjoy
They are great!!! They will not give you any animal that is sick, has not gotten all the shots, etc. There is north shore animal hospital and a pet supply store they have now..... as far as free? I don't know, but would assume it is because the animals are supposed to be 100% healthy. I have been getting mybpets from there for decades, they have changed for the better......
Depending on what was done will depend on the stitches used. I recommend you contact NSAL for that information
As far as I know, ASPCA is not no kill. Why can't you make arrangements for your loving family member to come with you. Ask as many people as you know as well. Do call NSALA though. All the best to you and puppy!
I think you have to call and make an appointment to do so.
You will have to do your research I don't know any place where you can adopt a bird Northshore only has cats and dogs
No credit check needed they just want to make sure the pet is in a safe environment and you can take care of it they ask you a few questions and that's it and review your application
I'm not sure about that. I will have to check into that the next time I go there. You can check their website tomorrow for that particular question. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
They have a hospital to make them better I truly doubt they put out puppies that are sick for adoption
Speak to your Vet, maybe they could suggest something.
Call them
Im sure there are.Call them I'm sure they can help you.Good Luck!!
Call them
Yes twice
Sorry I don't know call the town of North Hempstead shelter
Don't know call them also call the town of North Hempstead
It's not a pet shop. It's a shelter. You can adopt whatever animals they have who need a home. If you're serious about adopting you should visit with an open mind and I'm sure you'll find lovely dogs in all shapes and sizes who can't wait to go to their forever home.
They usually have them on there mailers of who won. It's a scam anyway not real.
I dont no Patricia glen I'm a community member.
No appointment needed. They are only open Friday thru Sunday.
I am interest
Yes
Yes affordable spay and neuter Dr burger
No
It's hard to get a"small dog" puppy there since most pups there are mutts
They do as long as it's not open
You have to check their website, they have a lot of mixes.
Most pups are same day adoption but I suggest you get there early. You would then pick out a pup and ask someone. They'll give you an application to full out and they'll ask for 2 references. When done, you'll have to wait about 3-4 hours while they check up on you and make calls. I wish you the best of luck
We got a mixed Lab last month.black & white paws
Yes
Yes, they will also ask for references from neighbors, verfing thier phone # and address, to see if you are responsible neighbor.
Yes you can, however, you would need to make an appointment. Call their number and talk to them. You can not show up without an appointment since it's passed 30 days from adopting. Upon returning the dog, you would need to have their original tag (their North Shore tag) along with ALL the paper work. The original adopter also has to be there to present the dog.
I think they only charge $15 for their vet to do the first shots
I don't work there. That's gonna be hard to find. You have to check all the rescue sites on line every day if you're looking for something that specific
I'm not sure give them a call and find out
Yes
Think Monday to Friday you should call it's worth it can't beat the prices
I believe there is volunteering information on their website. I think they generally take older kids and might also want experience.
They need approval to show that it's permitted to have a dog at your residency. If coop or condo, needs to show that from management. If rented, then a letter from landlord. Other than that, you will need to fill out paper works there
No
Thursday get there 3pm
Yes
Yes they do...why r u returning your pet?
Go to North Shore with your cat and a donation
About $140
Sorry about your loss. I will be hard to look for a specific breed at a shelter including this one.
Yes
You can always call them I found them to my helpful
We adopted 3 years ago and we visited frequently after (any time our puppy had an appointment in the health center). They typically have a nice range of ages. For very young puppies, they usually have some but they tend to get adopted quickly, especially in december.
We always have staff there to care for the animals even when closed
Eastern
Pretty sure they can help
Nice of you but I'm not sure. They must accept donations
It all depends on the demand for cats....but if you need a home for one of them let me know..
Call for appointment if is an emergency , or a non well check visit take him /her to the hospital which is aoround the corner of the clinic they are open earlier..good doctors
I think is better go take looks
I'm not sure, you might want to call, good luck!
Yes
I'd would call them to find out
About 4 months but North Shore Animal League will tell you about it when you adopt. They want you to bring them back for spay and neuter.
Call to verify.
I agree with Ken, I sure you'd have to bring them in but you should call them to verify. Or maybe call the ASPCA to see if they would be willing to help and pick up your new house guess. Hope this info helps. Good luck.
I think it's 18. You should call and ask. They will ask for other documentation too. You have to provide references and they'll verify them. They want to be sure their pets go to good homes.
Please call North Shore Animal Shelter directly...I'm just a client of theirs....I'm sure they will help....Good luck
They are currently under construction and have reduced hours until it's over
Yes you can they accept cats and dogs
Nope.
You will have to get a letter from the past owner or have him call to state you are now the new owner. And will then be able to change the new info.that is affiliated with the dog.
Wouldnt bet on it. They dont hold pets. You cant reserve. First come first serve.
Yes, it's not too much of an involved process on the applicant side.
You can put name on there list.Call to see if you can go through the paper work and it would be on file.
Check their website to see what's available for adoption.
You should ask but i dont think they all get chiped, only after a certain age
You mean if you want to give them your animal because you cant take care of them anymore? They do take in animals and help to find them forever homes. If you mean pick up ur animal for like a checkup, i dont think they do that but you can try calling them to make sure
Puppies are submissive by nature and therefore will "get along" with an older dog.
You can only get one at a time and there is a waiting period in between
Hmmm, sorry to hear that you cant keep Milo due to his weight or larger than expected size. The outcome for the adult size of puppies is always a guess. Some may end up smaller than expected. Many years ago, we adopted the "runt" from a litter of mixed breed pups. Dusty grew to about 95 lbs after a year! Maybe call North Shore and explain the situation. They may take him back. Whatever the outcome, please do what's best for Milo.
This happened with my 18 year old Beagle February. The vet I saw tried a pill to ease his pain. Paralysis set in an I had to pick him off the floor. I hated to see this. My brother died too. So I felt it better to have him put down March 2nd. I adopted a puppy March 3rd.
Since this is an adoption center the dogs and cats available change often. They do definitely get all kinds of dogs, including teacup and purebreds, but I'd imagine that they get adopted quite quickly when they come in.
I do not know exactly but they do have a great financial plan
Yes
"Baby girl havoc and pit bull" have to be the funniest combination of words in the English language. That being said, because of the social stigma associated with pitbulls, they are sure to have plenty for adoption. Good luck
Theres more then one building, hence more than one address. This is one of Northshores address
Cats and dogs only
All goes to the leaque to support thier efforts on behalf of dogs and cats.
Call North Shore and request the breed that you are waiting for. There are no guarantees and you could wait a long time.
No I don’t want a stud. I just prefer males. I have light colored carpets. Plus I’ve had males in the past 2 of them just not at the same time. I truly love the breed. Would they hold a pup is there pictures of them on the site to choose I’m like 5 hours away one way. I used to live on Long Island. I would even pay for pup over the phone with credit card or debit card doesn’t matter.
They add an additional fee of $75 to the adoption fee. If the animal is young and needs neutering the $75 is refunded when its done. You can bring the pet back to them or to your vet. Show N.S.A.L. the proof and the'll reimburse the fee.
Yes as long as they can contact your references. Plan on spending a few hours there.
For kittens we were told eight weeks old minimim. They are really helpful, give them a call for more info
They would help you and its a no kill shelter
Give then a call first.
That I am not sure. I would think so, your best bet would be to give them a call. I am sure they would want to diagnose it for themselves first.
You can walk in , you don't need an appointment. Price depends on the kind of dog or cat you are adopting. But keep in mind it is suppose to be a donation. You will also go thru an adoption process.
If their phone is not working maybe you can check them out on the internet, maybe it's very busy . Saturday is a busy day
Your best bet is to go there. They are minimal compared to all the vets, and I find them top of the line also compared to other vets.
Please let us know if they took your dog..I say they won't unless it is a puppy...It's a scam..I contacted them numerous times on their dogs that end up at the NYC kill shelter..They NEVER respond..One died yesterday..RIP Max 3-3-18
I do know that all depends on the Vets that are there. Not all of them work on other animals but some do. Such as rabbits.
I believe you can cancel at anytime , you can also check with your bank.
I believe when I was there recently I saw someone getting their pet teeth cleaned. Best bet is to call though. Might be only certain days or hours.
Call them
It is immoral and unconscionable to kill any animal or cause an animal pain and suffering. People who wear animal fur for their vanity will pay with karma for their inhumanity.
Northshore Animal shelter , is located in the Port Washington section of Long Island. Exit 36 off LIE. Exit Searingtown Road. From there it's 10minutes off exit. Google maps or Waze for directions will get you there. Hope this helps
I believe it depends on different things. Age,weight,breed and weight. I'd call & check. I adopted a 6m old, 40lb dog,,they neutered him,everything came to $100
Recently I just got a beautiful boxer pitbull mix. You could even call before going and ask if that's the specific dog you are going 4.
Call Bully Crew, If They Can't Help They Might Be Able To Reccomend Someone. Check them on Facebook. New York bully crew
I'm not sure. Call them, they are all lovely people who work there. So sorry for your loss.
Yes, takes awhile, but worth it.
I went to North Shore last March looking for a Pom and was lucky enough to find a Pom. She came from a puppy mill in Oklahoma and was a day away from going to adoption unit from medical unit. I came back the next day and formally adopted her. If you're patient you can find a Pom there but don't be picky when it comes to color because they are few and far between.
How old is your dog? I had dogs all my life, and for me my dogs have been and are part of my life. And when they die i mourned for them the same as a family member. For now you can take lots of videos and pictures of you and your dog so you can have all those wonderful moments that you lived with your dog. I hope this can put your mind at ease for when that time comes.
They could have most any breed. I was looking for a Pomeranian and got lucky when I found one to adopt. If they gather dogs from puppy mills you'll find some top breeds. Got to ask to be advised if any are available and keep checking
Only you can feel that in your heart...is your dog suffering?
I would think they don't, they look for donations, hard to believe they have a sweepstakes. Never heard of it
They are very cautious about spreading things between animals. That makes me think they wouldn't accept such a kind donation. Still I suggest that you call them and ask.
We live in nj... We adopted. So i dont see why you couldnt drive from any state. Nirthshore animal league gave us a DREAM dog. 5 year old cutie named winnie. So tame and well trained. Seriously i feel like we hit the lottery. But a simple phone call will answer. You generally dont get businesss replying to questions so i wouldnt drive up without calling.
You have to call them and ask.
Sign up for emails. They'll sent you emails on when they hit a puppy mill. All those pups come in for check up and ready for adoption
Thank you for your help
You would have to contact the show and find out where the adoptions are located. If you are looking for a puppy , northshore has quite a few and so does the Aspca. Just food for thought. I hope this helps
Yes, they have both. However, there is an adoption fee. You can also try the ASPCA. They have kittens and cats as well. I know the ASPCA will charge a small fee according to income. However, the North Shore Animal League would not allow me to adopt because my income was not enough i.e. retirement.
You have to keep going back and see what they have each week sometimes each day? Depending on what you're looking for, remember a dog may be looking for you?
I am not sure, was not aware that North shore animal league had a truck
No clue. Why don't you just give them a call?
No its not a game show or retail store. Its a no kill animal shelter. First prize saving an animals life.
Fine out how much van mobile from place to go bensonhurt that it
I believe they accept most, saw many different signs up. They take care credit too I believe, sorry don't recall any particular names.
I really don't know.
