I myself have to agree, if you can't pay the $75 adoption fee that covers much more than just taking the animal home you shouldn't even look into getting a pet. They cost money to care for on a daily basis let alone the doctor bills and shots etc. I do know here in Texas we have a "clear the shelter day" once a year. I'm not sure if any other state does this but I'd look into it. Also, If you look online and at your local pet stores there are plenty of people giving away cats and dogs even other little fur friends! Its usually someone who got a pet and realized there is a lot more to having a pet than just giving affection. I have collected many new family members just simply walking the neighborhood. I now have 6 cats, a dog and about 30 fish! Yes, I have a problem turning away any stray animal..it costs me about $80 a month in food alone and thats a good deal! I spend more than $400 every 3 months for flea meds alone and yes they're all indoors but I have a dog who gets walked..

North Shore Animal League is the ABSOLUTE WRONG place to try to adopt from if you want it free. The wouldn't adopt to me because I'm on disability. Saying that's not sufficient income.
