I have never heard of a hypoallergenic cat except the one that is hairless. Your friend needs allergy testing and should know the extent of allergy before taking an animal into the home and then developing asthma. The animal league won't give an animal if there is risk the animal would have to be returned or given away. Dogs on the other hand , do have hypoallergenic breeds which don't shed. Look them up on the Internet to have a basic knowledge of appropriate breeds that are suitable. There is a wealth of information out there. Poodles are the most common.
Someone does assist in meeting the pets and adoptions. But it's probably best to know exactly which she's allergic to (cat/dog/both) and determine if she needs a hypoallergenic pet before she goes.
