The original test was to see if people could survive in a sealed environment (potentially on another planet). The oxygen level got too low so they started pumping in air. Most critics believe that defeated the point of the test. Overall, the concept and test were successful. The Biosphere 2 is now used by the University for small scale biological research into how environments adapt to changes. Much like what is happening to Biosphere 1 (Earth)
Also there is a lot to be said about the social aspect of the experiment. Maybe it was not intended to be a social experiment but the 8 inhabitants eventually split into 2 factions over some disputes and spent most of the final year barely talking with each other.
There is a new movie out called spaceship earth. Documentary. Worth watching
Poor planning would be my guess.I don't remember if that was talked about. It is a self guided tour.
