I really enjoyed this for the educational factor. I mean, that's what it's about after all. People with young children.... the little ones may like the plants, but I don't think much else. It's pretty cool though and so is the story behind it all. Another good thing is, it's a self guided tour.... going at your own pace is nice. Glad we went.

The best immersive science museum you will ever visit. I'd sleep over if they'd let me. Take the extra tour into "the lung", its worth it! The docents and staff are so helpful and passionate, ask all the questions, they love helping guests have a great experience.

My wife and I had a great time here. With a gorgeous scenery, that makes for some great photos. I also enjoyed there user friendly app. Which takes you step by step and with great insight on what the scientist went through and their goals. Best time to go would be the cooler months. There is walking and the rainforest section is SUPER humid.

Our first visit was back in February 2019 just before the pandemic shut everything down. We had an amazing tour guide who took us throughout the entire facility including the underneath part. Our second visit in January 2022 was a little different, we had to download an app to download tour guide videos, and didn't have access to go underneath the facility like our first visit. Regardless, it was a wonderful experience and my mother who joined us on our second visit enjoyed it.

The original test was to see if people could survive in a sealed environment (potentially on another planet). The oxygen level got too low so they started pumping in air. Most critics believe that defeated the point of the test. Overall, the concept and test were successful. The Biosphere 2 is now used by the University for small scale biological research into how environments adapt to changes. Much like what is happening to Biosphere 1 (Earth)
As already mentioned, it is a virtual tour through an app that you play at each stop so it's at your own pace. It reminded me of a scavenger hunt that you'd play a video to get your next clue. :) Some inside parts are open (desert, rainforest, ocean) but a lot of stops are outdoors as well so lots of walking in the sun, FYI. 🌞
This is definitely not a handicap friendly space. Lots of stairs once you get in to do the tour
Was rainy and cold side in January. But, in the Biophere it was nice and comfortable. Depending on tour site. Very nice place to visit. The guide will explain everything as you go along. You will enjoy the visit.
It is not a zoo. It's a series of totally enclosed ecosystem experiments comprised of a wide variety of plant life. It's well worth seeing.
We visited about a week ago. I called over in the morning to ask about a wheelchair accessible tour. We were lucky and they had a giude available for a modified tour. It was GREAT! Our guide, Carol, was wonderful. I highly recommend.
I'm not sure of true elevation. Are you asking because of the walking involved?
There's actually two tours, a short history tour that takes approximately 30 to 40 min and then the main tour which takes about 1.5 hrs, both tours are optional
I would say if the 9 year old in question likes science or even space travel, they would probably be interested.
