I was a few hours late and Payless canceled my reservation. My flight was delayed, which has been pretty much the norm for the summer of 2022 air travel. Payless then charged me more than double for a lesser vehicle than the original reservation. I would strongly advise against using Payless. Go with a premium or mid-tier car rental service instead, you will get a better vehicle for less money.

Check in was fast and retrieving the car and exiting the airport was easy. The car was clean. But, be aware that there is an additional $150 charge for what they label as Zone 2 travel. I was told it was for the unlimited mileage. It was shown to me when I checked in and I was surprised because I figured their posted fees on the internet already included the unlimited mileage. By then I was not going to start looking around for another rental car service. Personnel were polite.

DO NOT RENT FROM THIS COMPANY. I should have read the other reviews, but please do yourself a favor and stay far away. First, the not-so-unlimited "unlimited mileage" policy is a load of garbage. If they don't want people taking the cars far away, why can't they just say so from the get-go instead of hiding travel distance restrictions in the fine print of an allegedly unlimited rental. They'll charge you $$$ to take the car further than about Riverside county, even more if you do it inadvertently. Second, they clearly know people are upset with the nasty surprise at the check in counter, so they have a "no refunds after 48hrs prior" policy. This should be a red flag to anyone renting a vehicle. Finally, the actual vehicle I rented had over 100,000 miles in it, and was clearly questionably maintained. It literally stalled with no warning (automatic transmission) while exiting a freeway, leaving me without power steering or powered hydraulics for the brakes. Kinda sketch...

Was two hours late picking up the car so they canceled my reservation. Had to pay more to rent a car and it was the worst car I’ve ever rented at a car rental agency. I have never had this issue with another rental agency and will never use Payless car rental again.

They never answer the local number and the national Payless will tell you they have nothing to do with this chain. Bottom line is don't use Payless in San Diego. Their counter people are trained to scam you apparently.
In my experience, they will charge you extra for every extra breath you take. This branch is scum, Payless Corp doesn't even want to acknowledge it. I always have extra charges.
Welcome to the toll road scam. They will try to get you to pay a set fee like $13.50 a day to use their toll service should you ever encounter a toll road one at most the toll road could cost you $6 or $8. Don't agree to pay any tolls if you have to go through a non-person toll you will only owe the amount of the toll even though they might try to charge you $6.95 extra. I would say just don't use payless. And save yourself the problem.

I received great service at the counter and bought the additional insurance. Someone else rubbed the car there were no questions asked when I returned the car. I had a great experience with Payless. With the bad reviews there are also good ones. As the other person mentioned they are as good as the other car rental companies.

They will cancel your reservation if you don’t get there within an hour of your listed pick up time even if you were waiting in the line for the whole hour then charge you triple the rates!!!

Save your time and money and call a different car rental. After fees you might as well have went with one of the better Brands and got the same price if not lower.

HORRIBLE rental company - cars likely to break down. Would NOT trust their cars in the US much less in Mexico. They rented us a junky, dirty car and when it would not start they tried charging us for a battery. The car was filthy inside and the last service was over a year before. We fought it and won. When we told our friends at a party two other people said they had similar bad experiences with "Payless."
