We decided to hike up this while we were visiting Calufornia. Best decision ever. Do not do it if your not in shape. It's pretty subtle at the beginning but gets more steep at the end. About a five mile hike total. Breathtaking once you get to the top. Bring LOTS of water. We brought multiple bottles and it was just enough. We made it a day trip (takes about 6 hours total) then went back and got in the nice cold pool at the air b and b! Recommend 10/10

For those who like to walk. The trail goes uphill, the journey takes about an hour, be sure to take water with you and you need to have a hat, especially when the weather is hot.

It’s absolutely beautiful. A lot steeper then we expected and didn’t anticipate how hot it was going to be. Definitely bring plenty of water. Quite a few people on the trail but not so many that we where constantly around people.

If you visit San Diego, definitely check out this hike! The view at the top of Mt Woodson alone is worth the effort, but potato chip rock is super unique + an awesome photo opportunity. We went up the back way (address is 16310 CA-67, Ramona, CA 92065). There was plenty of parallel parking on highway 67 on a Monday morning. The back way is about 4 miles round trip, as opposed to 7.3 miles round trip if you start from Lake Poway. The path was almost completely paved and VERY steep. It’s challenging but doable, especially if you go slow. I highly recommend wearing a hat/sunscreen as there’s not a lot of shade on the trail. We started the hike around 9am on a Monday. We got to the top around 10:30am. There were 4 other groups already there taking photos so we had to wait a little while, but it wasn’t too bad. I’ve heard from local friends that on weekends the trail can get crowded and the wait time to get a photo on potato chip rock can be 30+ minutes. Overall, a really cool hike. Highly recommend checking it out if you’re visiting San Diego!

Only rocks and dirt. If you like the outdoors you will like a picnic up there during sunset
It has no cost, it is free. You only need your time and energy to climb the mountain. Good luck 🤞 🤗💪
No, You can go anytime
The gate opens at 6 am and closes at dusk. There's a $10 parking fee during the weekends for non-poway residents.
Yes but the trail from lake poway isn't bike friendly at all going up or down. The road up the back side from the 67 would be doable on a bike though it's pretty crowded on the weekends with people taking the easy way up.
Unfortunately the path is rocky dont think it would be a good idea.
You can park your car along the road near trailhead
Yes, u can use.
It's well worth the climb. Not to bad a few places to rest along the way. Spectacular and awesome views of the valleys down below. Take plenty of water and a few snacks for a relaxing sit. Have a great time.
Save the beer in the car for after the hike. It's not a stroll in the park as Dawn pointed out. Plus they sell food and beer at the lodge right by the parking lot...if they are open when you go.
Better go on a dry trail and sunny day.
It's a trail so yes, stand up and walk is the thing. Southern California is home to hundreds of bird species. I recommend a Google image search for the best details.
They are usually hiding underneath big rocks and boulders and under dense vegetation along the sides of the trail. That's where the one snake I saw come out from. I put one foot on top of this big rock to tie my shoelace and must have moved the rock and out came this red and black striped snake close to my other foot on the ground. They heard me scream from a mile away. 😅
The 2 mile hike (4 RT) is off hwy 67 at Mt Woodsen road south 9f Ramona. Park just off the hwy for free. Hike as early as possible to avoid summer heat.
Its not a 3 hours hike. There's diffwrent trails. There's a shorter one that takes 45 minutes up to 1 hour. If you wanna do the long one, you can take the short hike after get to the potato chip, so you can request a uber at the 67 freeway. The short hike starts at the 67 freeway, close to the CAL FIRE Ramona fire station. But I must advise you that I dont believe you could get an uber from there, because it's a place far from everything. Ive droped off someone there some day, so Ive got a request close by and the passanger told me that she would drive to Poway to get a Lyft/Uber there but she checked out the app before leave the house and I was just 13 minutes away. I would rent a car for a day. Try the company called Dirt Cheap in Point Loma, close to the airport and train station. They have a very low price for simple cars year 2008. No credit card needed. I just checked on my lyft and uber apps now and there's drivers 15 minutes away. But im not sure about availability.
Depends where you start (Poway lake or the 67) and your speed. It's 2 miles from the 67, with 1200 feet climb.
Yes it is open. Parking as well. All the way to the rock from either side is open.
I wouldn't do it, but its open.
Yes it is always open to the public
There is like a 40-50 ft drop below the rock, no structures below just nature.
Depends on your pace. We were taking our time and making sure everyone got their necessary water breaks and to enjoy the views along the hike and it took us about an hour and a half, maybe a bit more to get to the top.
There are two way up to potato chip rock. Thru lake poway or off Highway 67. We took the trail off hwy 67, it is paved road but very steep in some parts. Free parking along the road. Take plenty of water!
Mt Woodson Trail is the one we took. It was almost 4 miles up and 4 miles down. I believe there's a shorter way, but that's if you go from Ramona. On the other side of the mountain. We came from lake Poway. We started at 1 pm and got back to our vehicle at 5 pm. Also, take a light backpack, with lots of water. There was 5 of us and I took about 12 bottles of water (16 oz) and 1 was left over. Go as early as possible so it won't be as hot. Take some granola bars or small snacks. U get hungry after so much walking. Hope this helped. Good luck!
You can use the trail head on the left side of the Ramona fire station. Use coordinates 225V+6R, Poway, California in Google maps. You reach the Potato Chip Rock in about 45mins-1h depending on your hiking skills.
Yes, as long as you're not parked at Lake Poway when the gates are closing. You can park outside of Lake Poway or the Ramona side is not gated so you're not restricted to gate hours.
There is a path from SR-67 up to Mt. Woodson but it may be too difficult.
If you start at lake Poway, it's about 7.5 miles. Took us about 4 hours, taking our time.
if you take the fire road its a paved road to the top, 45 mins to the top, 20 mins to hike down
Any month that it is cooler outside. Early spring is beautiful or fall after it has rained because evwrything is green. Enjoy the trail in lower temperatures.
Yes
I didn't see any rules posted, but I parked on Hwy 67 near the Cal Fire station and walked up the trail from there. I did not enter from Lake Poway. We combined the fire road and the Fry-Koegel Trail for an enjoyable 5.6 mile loop. The Lake Poway Park web site says " Lake Poway's gates open at 6:00 AM daily and are closed and locked at sunset. "
Half hour on the weekend. Usually shorter wait time on a weekday.
It is over 7 miles, over 1800ft of elevation change, so plan accordingly. Take plenty of water.
It is accessible with a stroller, just very steep. You will certainly feel the burn💪
It's still there. The mayor had pulled an April fool's joke by saying that it had been broken, but it was simply that, a joke.
Absolutely, but bring at least 2 liters of water for them.
