Yesterday I did a whole 6 miles hike, back and forth, from Turnbull canyon entrance south bound, north sumac trail, north rosehill no.1, skyline dr, back to Turnbull. It was pretty fair, and a total of 3 hours with 5 min breaks in betwee each trail.

Turnbull is a nice beginners trail for the most part. Most of the trail is very mild uphill, only towards the end near the water tower is it any challenge, even then it's very short distance of steep incline. The views are nice weather permitting. You can clearly see DTLA and the SG mountains. If you have good eyes you can see Signal Hill. Parking is hard because they're is no immediate access to the trail, you'll have to try your luck at the Greenleaf/Turnbull area which is almost a mile away. For me this is a plus, keeps less dedicated crowds away, sorry, not sorry. You just have to be mindful while on the road as the sidewalk ends halfway to the trail. Other than that, it's a nice place, medium difficulty. Keep in mind there are no restrooms near trail and no water either, that's why I give it 4 stars. Given that you'll be there 2-3hrs at a casual pace, then you should take care of business before you go. 😅🚽

This is a great trail for hiking, usually go during the weekday (because the parking is easier) and it’s never too crowded. It’s always rewarding to make it to the top of an just take a moment to let it all in. Photos taken on a recent hike (I strapped my camera and lenses on and took it up the trail, probably won’t do that again).

I really liked this hiking trail. It says its moderate, but I'm not going to lie...it was pretty tough. Lots of uphill. The view is great at the top. It can be a busy trail. We got there kinda late so many people were ending their walks, but several were still hiking. Parking can be tough as there isnt much space and the neighborhood is permit only. After the neighborhood the permit only stops and you might get lucky and find a spot; inbetween the neighborhood and the hiking trail. We took our dog. He loved it also. We saw a tarantula in a ditch on the trail. It was dark before we finished. Take a flashlight and water.

Turnbull is over crowded and restrictions on the parking is to lower the environmental damage of the crowds. There's over 750k hikers/bicyclists visit this area yearly, that's more than many national parks. Without parking restrictions the crowds will continue to grow destroying paths & wild life.
Yes get to the top of the Turnbull. You will see electrical towers above you. Carry your bike around the gate. It's a steep road. Ride it if you can. But when you get to the top. Look down. The trail goes every which way. Look at my picks. To the South.
Drive into the canyon. There are two places to park on the right side near the top.
Stay on the trails and you will be fine.
Go all the way on beverly blvd after you pass the residentials it will be on the left hand side where the little gazebo is at
Yes. Make sure they are on a leash. And bring poop bags to pick up after fido.
One trail from Hellman to Trunbull is 3.5 added another trail to bring it up to 7+ miles
You can look. In u tube. Will tell. The all story....

Hellman Park is the entrance if you're going to be there from 9-5, that is when the park is open and after hours you have to look for areas with no preferential parking.
No bbq. You can visit a whittier city Park to BBQ
There is no fare for parking but there is not a lot of space permit parking is need it on the residential area so better not risk it I noticed people parks either on painter or as far to greenleaf and walk up to the trail
It depends what entrance you use. If you use the Hellman trail you walk up to the fork and either go right or left. The best way is to stay right and go up the steep Hill. When you get to the top of that you make a left onto the singletrack trail. That is called the Mariposa trail. If you enter off of Beverly boulevard. You stay left on the fire road until you get to the fork and make a right that will take you up to the water tank. If you continue heading east of the water tank you will hit a trail known as the switchback trail. If you make a right and head down that trail it leads to the main fire road. Two different entrances, twa different loops.
No, no motorized vehicles. It's a shared hiking, and mountain biking trails.
Well park hours are 9am to 5pm till May, June will be open till 6pm. The reason for the park hours is so that wildlife can roam the hills peacefully. They give us enough time to enjoy the hills so we should also let wildlife enjoy it as much as we do.
The snowcaps can be seen with amazing clarity.
I would not recommend a trip at that time. There are a lot of coyote and even a mountain lion spotted now & then. You also would be in danger of homeless/ taggers and on top of that violated the trail hours in danger of the Park Rangers.
Yes they wait for you to come down
I don't recommend it.
dog friendly yes. rules are all dogs on leash and rangers are very bored and will issue tickets unfortunately. I think the earlier you go the better off you'll be. but due to the new park hours that makes it tuff. heads up for coyotes and deer!
