Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor of the memorial started in 1927 and completed in 1941, taking 14 years to complete. The nearby Crazy Horse has taken much longer, but is, of course, much more ambitious.
Gutzon Borglum was the original artist hired to carve Stone Mountain but left in 1925 after a money dispute taking his drawings and plans with him. Augustus Lukeman was the second sculpture. He carved 3 figures but didn't finish it. The State of Georgia purchased the mountain after 3 decades of inactivity. It was finally finished in 1972 nearly 50 years from its start.
It was never actually completed. The carvings were supposed to be busts of the presidents, as you can see in the Sculptors Studio. They stopped working on Mt. Rushmore when Borglum died around the beginning of WW2. Just the faces were already world known, and they decided that instead of using more money to complete the carvings, they would leave it as it was..

Didn't he do Stone Mtn?
Somewhere along about 14 yrs or so. Lots of hard work and sweat
About 14 years! Which when you see it in person, without all the advances we have today I felt it should've taken much longer.
