Worth the hike, weather was GREAT when we went in July. My 16 year old had the best time too. We enjoyed the lake after.

Great trail! I went on a November day and thankfully there was so snow. The wind at the top was fierce, but the structure gave perfect relief from it. I highly recommend this trail if you are in the area.

Black Elk Peak is the tallest mountain east of the Rockies and is sacred to the Lakota. The hike to the top from Sylvan Lake is moderately strenuous, and the view from the top is incredible.

Carry a lot of water, this is a hike in the heat of day. It had almost Forty years since my last hike up here. I enjoyed the views, on the way up and back. Interesting hikers young and old were on the trail. Give your self time to enjoy the hike. Pick and eat the wild raspberries.

We took Rt 9 up and Rt4 back... was about 8 mi loop and took us about 6 hours including about a 45 minute stop to eat at the top. We could have done it in probably 4 to 5 hours without lunch and at a faster pace...We really took our time and enjoyed the hike.

No, this is national forest territory. But Custer has an amazing fireworks display!
It should be just fine for a 13 year old. It was a little challenging near the top just because of the stone stairs but the view is absolutely worth it. I would plan for about 5 hours if you want to down some time at the peak.
There is a gift shop at Sylvan lake
Sylvan lake and then take either 4 or 9 up and the opposite down
Yes I don't think they have hours. I parked at Sylvan lake at 6am had to self pay, but trails are open, enjoy!
No fee to hike the trail itself.
You have to hike it. There are a few trails. The main trailhead begins near Sylvan Lake
If you start from Custer State park the trails are all very well marked
The hike is SUPER fun! I hiked it last June and it was just incredible, with the views to the fun hike. It's not too difficult. I'm not sure what it's like in March. I highly recommend this hike!
Our 6 year old golden retriever did the hike no problem. Bring lots of water!
