Washington was considered the father of the new nation who guided the country's government and political structure as it's first president. Jefferson was the man who expanded the country's borders and enlarged the nation from coast to coast via the purchase (from France) of the Louisiana Territory and the exploration of said territory and the Pacific Northwest. Lincoln was the great emancipator of the nation who not only freed the slaves but preserved the union as one nation via the Civil War. T.R. guided the nation as an international power into a new (20th) century with its industrial, political, and military might--as he built the Panama Canal, launched and exhibited the U.S. Navy as a sign of military prowess, negotiated the end of the Russo-Japanese war earning him the Nobel Peace Prize, corralled the American Industrial moguls into honoring the working class w/fair wages and conditions, and established the U.S. Parks system.

Carving started in 1927 by Borglum. Washington was dedicated in 1931 representing the founding of our government. Jefferson was dedicated in 1936 representing the expansion of the US via the Louisiana purchase. Lincoln in 1937 for preserving the Union. Roosevelt in 1939 for the completion of the Panama Canal. Borglum died in early 1941 a few months before it was completed by his son, Lincoln.
