A real steam engine with cars from the 19th century. The history, views, and staff were amazing. I recommend making a reservation in advance. We went on a Tuesday at 12:45 and it was packed both ways, in addition to the trip before and the trip after. We rode Keystone to Hill City. The “window” cars have windows that slide open, the “open” cars have a roof, but completely open sides. It was hot, but the train was moving, the wind was blowing and the kids were sleeping by the end of the first trip! Trains are so relaxing… Pro tip-we were on Battle Creek which had padded seats. Some of the cars had park-bench seats, others had padded. Make sure you get what you want (long trip to sit on wood slats). The seats flip, so no matter which way you go, you will be facing forward. They sell drinks/snacks on the train (cash only). If you go keystone to hill city, sit up front by the engine. It does a “steam off” as its pulling into hill city which look awesome! Then, while they are filling up the steam engine, walk a block to the west and get an ice cream cone…plenty of time!

Rather you board in Keystone or Hill City both destinations have plenty to do. 2 hour round trip seeing plenty of the terrain some history and random animals and fowl on the way. Making the trip unique. My wife and I rode the enclosed car Orville and the open car Red fern, from Keystone to Hill City. Hill City has a Train museum and a snack shop. The food was average but a very welcomed snack. No restrooms on the train so make sure you go before you go. They offer candy bars and popcorn on the train along with drinks. Overall very fun and informative ride.

I've ridden the train twice now and both times were incredible. Most recently I took the trip that had the "Shootout" Midway through the ride and it was spectacular! The scenery along the ride is great and the history that is shared is enriching. A definite attraction to put on the to do list in the Black Hills!

Don't even think about skipping this of you're in Keystone! This experience was worth every penny and the views of the Black Hills are breathtaking! The air was fresh and this was in themiddle of July 2015! I'm dying to go back!!! We enjoyed waiting for our turn to ride the train by shopping at the gift shop and seeing the sites in Keystone. This is something your children will never forget!

Yes, you can choose any of the return departures that are available. One of the favorites is taking the 10:00 out of Hill City and returning on the 2:30 from Keystone!
Room costs for 3 people
Yes and each way is an hour and you can get off then use the restroom if needed then get right back on for the ride back.
The train takes one hour to travel between Hill City and Keystone. In most cases there is a short 15 minute layover and the train returns to your point of origin. Overall duration 2 hours 15 minutes. You can also choose to return on a later train which will give you about 2-1/2 hours to explore town at the halfway point of your ride. Please see our schedule below for specific dates and departure times. https://www.1880train.com/train-schedule.html
adults are 32.00 round trip plus tax, children age 3-12 are 16.00 round trip plus tax. age 0-2 are free. one way is 27.00 adults, 14.00 child. I hope this helps.
Thank you for your interest in the 1880 Train! They are not air conditioned, in the enclosed cars, each bench seat, has a window that you are able to open or close, and we have the open sided cars that do have a roof, but big open sided windows.
Thank you for your inquiry. Our track is north of Mt Rushmore, so and the monument is not visible from the train. You will be able to see Old Baldy Mtn, Elkhorn Mtn and Harney Peak, with other nature, wildlife and historical mining sites.
Check on the price.worth every penny.
There is shopping in keystone.. a few restaurants... I don't recommend planning to get food in hill city bc it takes too long and you could very easily miss your return... In keystone there is shopping and food... We started in hill city for our trip... Not sure how long your break will be for return... It is so worth the time and great bargain
No, it is not.
Did not see a kennel. One service dog rode with us.
They have to go back to Keystone for other people.
The train is a narrated, 20-mile round trip between Hill City and Keystone in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota, with views of Black Elk Peak, mining encampments, forests, meadows and rock formations. We do have Old West Shootouts as special events on Thursday 6:45 pm departures from Hill City through the end of July and on September 6th. You choose your seats when you make your reservation and we suggest choosing seats on the opposite side for the return trip so that you see different scenery.
