I am traveling April 1-8 to Italy. My passport expires on May 26th. Will this cause a problem?

Generally in order to get a visa or to travel internationally you need to have at least 6 months of valid time on your passport that covers the duration of your trip. So in your case your passport would need to be valid until roughly October 8th of 2018, but that would be the absolute minimum. There are ways to expedite or rush the renewal of your passport but that will not work over the weekend, or the day before you leave in yoir case. I hope you have trip insurance. My best advice would be to call the airline you are traveling with and ask them your situation. Good luck! And if please respond with how this ends up for you.

I have to fly standby on Monday there are plenty of seats. I can get an emergency passport at the Federal Building Monday morning. They open at 7AM

As long as you're back before it expires I don't see the problem. Contact homeland security to get an official answer.
