I have used my Debit card. It is true, you have to pay a deposit so what they do is to "freeze" that amount in your account. They do not charge it but instead of that the amount appears as a recent transaction in your card. Later, if you don't damage the car the frozen amount goes back to your account. I hate using my Debit card because of this, you basically are lending 1000 dollars for a couple of weeks. The timefrsme will depend on your bank. Mine takes about 2 weeks. Better use a Credit Card

Agree with Esteban and with a credit card you get mileage or cash back points from your credit card company. Plus with some credit cards you get limited vehicle coverage (check with your cc issuer!). Then use AAA for added discounts.
