Beautiful and historic! Well executed representation of mission life in the 1700's. Well kept grounds and amazingly well preserved buildings. I definitely reccomend it for the special events they host.

So much history to learn. Inside of the mission grounds and exhibits are well taken care of and the exhibits are set up with numbers for an audio tour you take at your own pace. Membership is available. Friendly staff. Variety of items inside shop. If you collect flat pennies there are 2 machines located inside the mission...

It was an annual things for this city that celebrated its famous Swallows Parade. It finally started after 2-3 years pandemic. There was a lot of people gathering and having a great parade and times. Good to be at this place to celebrate the tradition. Even actor Eric showed up too.

Beautiful historic site which is explains the history of the Mission in Orange County. Has a beautiful chapel inside. Free audio guide included with admission. Has several exhibitions on different things: treasures, the mission’s operations history, different historic living quarters, etc. there is a gift shop as well that sells various religious things. While the site mentions the Native Americans who built the place, not much else is discussed about them, which is kind of annoying. I wish they would have included more recent scholarships on how the arrival of the Mission from Europe and other places affected the local Native American populations, both the positive and the negative. I also wish they dedicate a section/two of the place for the Native Americans who built this place. Aside from that they have a room on St. Junipero Serra which contains historical info about his life and ministries.

As soon as you get off the train walk down Verdugo St. and make a left on Cmino Capistrano and you will see the cross walk that takes straight to the mission. I would use walking navigation as soon as you get off the train.
There's a big statue of Fr. Serra by the entrance to Serra Chapel.
On the bell wall, there are 4 bells. But in front of the Great Church ruins, there are two additional hanging bells on display.
Mission San Juan Capistrano was the 7th mission, founded by Father Junipero Serra in 1776.
About 45 minutes or 45 miles

It is... breath-taking and beautiful. Flowers and paths everywhere to lead you around the property. A small cozy church in mass is regularly held. A vegetable near a picnic lunch area. A handful a beautiful water fountains. Even the ruins of the original church are a sight to behold.
It is located in the small town of San Juan Capistrano off of Ortega Highway. The docents have done their best to maintain the ruins but there is so much surrounding it that it makes it hard to truly enjoy it. It is awe inspiring. As to the why may never be truly known but it is the location that St. Serra chose to settle in to create a home for the monks and people in the area at the time.
I went on Saturday and there was also an event. I believe that if you will not have access to the entire Mission then they should give you a discount. I was there for a class project.
There are 2 restrooms located onsite and are identified on the map and guide provided at the entrance. You can view the map of the grounds on our website at https://www.missionsjc.com/hours/mission-grounds-map
They give you a listening device and has numbers throughout the mission So you can learn years and Dates on what happened and who lived there
It's purpose was to evangelised the native Indians and teach them how to harvest the land
To tell you the truth I do. Not have a clue. Only thing I can tell you is there were good people under harsh circumstances throughout history.
Good afternoon the Mass in Spanish on Sundays is at one o'clock in the afternoon

Did you know? Mission San Juan Capistrano was founded the same year the Declaration of Independence was signed, and shares the same birth year as the United States! American President Abraham Lincoln has a unique connection to Mission San Juan Capistrano. Just months prior to his tragic assassination he signed a patent of title returning Mission San Juan Capistrano back to the Catholic Church. That document, often referred to as "The Lincoln Document," is historically priceless and is part of the Mission's museum collection displayed from time to time. The Great Stone Church collapsed during a worship service on December 8, 1812. After the disaster, the padres made no attempt at rebuilding, therefore leaving it in ruins for the entire community to remember their loss. Annually, Mission San Juan Capistrano recognizes the "Day of Remembrance," tolling its bells and remembering the 40 victims who perished.

Yes their is a small chapel inside the mission still in use today. The original church was destroyed in an earthquake about. 100 years ago
It was "officially" founded in 1776. They tried 2 years earlier but has to return to the Mission in San Diego because of an uprising. The buildings on the grounds took many years to build.

There are many buildings to enter at this mission. The chuch building of course, but also other buildings that contain historical artifacts on display, pictures, or even activities made especially for kids. There's lots to see at San Juan. You'll also visit a gift shop near the entrance.
Put your starting point into google maps or google the drive time. But about an hour.
Not, daily...
7th Mission in the Chain
Your best research should be going through the mission buildings and grounds with a lot of historical explanations. Rent the audio tour earphones.
This is the only Mission at which it is actually known that St. Junipero Serra actually celebrated Mass in the Historic Serra Chapel, which is the oldest standing structure in California. Also every March 19th the famous Swallows of Capistrano return to nest on the Mission grounds and finally this Mission is one of 3 in California to have been founded twice along with San Gabriel and La Puríssima Concepción.
There is no river nearby that I know of. Maybe Trabuco or San Juan creeks?
Yup! Some areas you can't but generally yes
Mission San Juan Capistrano was founded on November 1, 1776.
The original structure started Nov 1, 1776. Been a while.

The Mission is owned by the Catholic Church, however it is run by a non-profit organization. This means, Mission San Juan Capistrano does not receive any funding from the Catholic Church, State, or Federal Government for operation or preservation. It depends entirely on the generous contributions of visitors and benefactors. With the help of the public, the Mission can continue to be a an inspirational historic, cultural, and religious site.
There are pictures on display inside the mission to show you what it looked like. You should visit so you can see them.
Maybe you should do your own homework kid
Lots of kids like you today and a California choir kids group as well. Looks as though they were all enjoying the mission.
Restoration has been done to the Basillica and to the West wing, also roof repair
Mission San Juan Capistrano was founded by Father Junipero Serra in 1776 as the 7th (of 21) mission along the Camino Real. It had actually been founded in 1775 by Father Fermin Lasuen, but within days of this original founding, the Kumeyaay attacked Mission San Diego and burned it down to the ground, brutally killing Father Jayme. In fear of expanding revolt, the mission bells were buried and the site quickly abandoned. Father Serra returned in 1776, with the first adobe chapel completed in 1778. A larger chapel (the Serra Church) was completed in 1782 and is still in use, the oldest building in California. By this time, of the Mission's quadrangle was also completed. So, if it took from the founding date of 1776 to 1782 to build the original quadrangle, it took 6 years -- four sides of buildings surrounding a large center court. But additional construction continued, especially with the building of the Great Stone Church (1797-1806). A massive earthquake destroyed it in 1812.
Many types of food items were produced at Mission San Juan Capistrano: Olives were grown, to be pressed into olive oil. Grapes were grown to to made into sacramental wine. The first planting of the 'Mission grape' occurred here, and the first wine (1783) produced in Alta California happened at Mission San Juan Capistrano. Grape plant cuttings from here were sent to other missions and subsequently spread throughout California. Barley was raised, as was corn and wheat for food. Grains were ground by stone into necessary flours. Primarily goats and sheep were raised (7,000) as were cattle (2,500), but fewer mules and horses (200)--the recorded herd numbers in 1790. Some livestock would have also provided a food source, but also would have provided items such as candles and soap (tallow), or produced leather products, or wool for the weaving of clothing and blankets.
For the museum tour only. Mass is held in the mission church regularly. I suggest attending if you are Catholic.
I don't know anything about school tours sorry. You should call the school to find out.
Most likely. But u would need to look up the apartment complexes there and call them.
You can buy a booklet @ any Catholic store.
The Mission of Saint John Capistrano of Sajavit. It is an awesome historical site. A must see.
Mission San Juan Capistrano was originally founded in 1775. This site was selected to be the "logical" halfway point between Mission San Diego and Mission San Gabriel. Logical, meaning that other certain criteria were needed. The location also needed to be near a water source so that the mission could prosper in an area large enough for crops and livestock. But it also needed to be near native villages. Missions were established in order to 'civilize' and through religious teachings, convert the willing natives to the Catholic Church. Additional instruction in various trades gave the mission its necessary workforce to grow and prosper. But soon after, the native tribe near Mission San Diego attacked, burning down that Mission. Fearing an expanding revolt at Capistrano, the mission bells were buried, and the site was quickly abandoned. In 1776, Father Serra returned to the site selected for Mission San Capistrano and re-founded it, the only mission that was founded twice.
As Missions were built along the Camino Real, sites were chosen to develop a system so that they were only one day's journey apart (one day on horse or three days on foot). Mission San Jose was chosen to be somewhat midpoint between Mission San Diego and Mission San Gabriel.
The Serra Chapel within San Juan Capistrano has been standing since 1788. It is the oldest building still in use in California. Mission San Juan Capistrano was founded in 1776. But the Serra Chapel is the oldest building still standing within the mission. That makes the Serra Chapel approximately 230 years old.
The first church, made from adobe was completed and blessed in 1778. In 1782, it was replaced by a larger adobe structure, the 'Serra Chapel' at Mission San Juan Capistrano. Needing a still larger church, the four story high 'Great Stone Church' (made of quarried sandstone blocks, limestone as mortar, and adobe) was constructed from 1797 until 1809. An earthquake in 1812 collapsed its roof, never to be rebuilt. It stands in ruins today. The adobe-constructed Serra Chapel is California's oldest building still in use.
It was founded Nov 1776
According to their current schedule, they have reduced hours on New Years Eve, but are open on New Years Day from 9:00-5:00, with the following statement that "hours might differ."
Im sorry i did not know there was one! You might reach out to there customer service number
This is the only mission along the Camino Real that was founded twice. Originally, it was founded by Father Lasuen in 1775 as the 7th mission. Eight days later, and after learning of that the native Kumetaay attacked and burned down Mission San Diego, the mission bells were buried and the site was abandoned. In 1776, Father Serra returned to the site and re-founded Mission San Juan Capistrano. Due to lack.of sufficient water, the Mission site was moved to its current location in 1778. Its first small church was completed and blessed in 1778. It was replaced by the larger Serra Chapel, completed in 1782. It still stands as the oldest building still in use in California. The Great Stone Church was built from 1797 -1809. The devastating earthquake of 1812 collapsed its roof, leaving it in ruins.
Call ahead before going. Especially with the holidays, there are some altered hours. But usually, it is open during normal business hours during the day.
Mission San Juan Capistrano is one of 21 missions established in California. Father Junipero Serra established this Mission in 1776 among 8 other missions along the Camino Real. This chain of missions located about a day's travel from each other allowed Spanish control of the area while serving the local Indian populations in Christian conversion.
The first CA mission built was Mission San Diego, the site dedicated by Father Junipero Serra on July 1st, 1769. The mission was moved 5 years later in order to be closer to a river water source, its current location.
You'll see the mission right outside the train window, and there's a bus stop next to it for those who want to go to Laguna Hills or San Clemente
