The first church, made from adobe was completed and blessed in 1778. In 1782, it was replaced by a larger adobe structure, the 'Serra Chapel' at Mission San Juan Capistrano. Needing a still larger church, the four story high 'Great Stone Church' (made of quarried sandstone blocks, limestone as mortar, and adobe) was constructed from 1797 until 1809. An earthquake in 1812 collapsed its roof, never to be rebuilt. It stands in ruins today. The adobe-constructed Serra Chapel is California's oldest building still in use.
