The Great Stone Church collapsed during a worship service on December 8, 1812. After the disaster, the padres made no attempt at rebuilding, therefore leaving it in ruins for the entire community to remember their loss. Annually, Mission San Juan Capistrano recognizes the "Day of Remembrance," tolling its bells and remembering the 40 victims who perished.

The original chapel was destroyed, as I recall. Do not recollect the date. There are some remains. A new larger church, based on the original one, was built just behind the mission
