Taking 2 weeks to process property tax payments when they are brought to office. 30-90 minutes phone wait. With so many people depositing online you would think these times shouldn’t be increasing !!!!

Make an appointment if possible. Things will go much more quickly. The clerks here work hard and do everything they can to get people out as soon as possible. Make sure you have done your homework and have all the required paperwork.

When selling my camper privately, do I keep the plates & send customer with Bill of Sale only? How do I get a refund for unused months on tags?

Pat Mechem | Oct 24, 2020
Polk County Treasurer | Oct 24, 2020

Hi, Pat, You will keep your plate and registration. You will need to sign the title over to your buyer and give them a Bill of Sale (there is a copy on our website at www.PolkCountyIowa.gov/treasurer. You may return your plates either by mail or use our drop box located in the front of the building and include a note with the sale date and verifying your address. If there is $10 of credit left on the plate we will apply for a refund through the Iowa DOT for you. You can expect to receive a check in 2-4 weeks from the State of Iowa. Hope that helped.

How do I go about registering a new car being the building is closed to public

Danielle Kuhle | Oct 24, 2020
Polk County Treasurer | Oct 24, 2020

Danielle, Since we are closed to the public, you may use our drop box in the front of the building or you may mail in the title work. Please include a phone number to call in case we have any questions or if you wish to pay over the phone with a credit card/echeck. Our website can help you with what is needed for a title transfer, a link to DOT's forms that you will need and also a link to help estimate fees. https://www.polkcountyiowa.gov/county-treasurer/vehicle-registration-sticker/vehicle-title-transfer/ . The governor's proclamation extended transfers so that vehicles purchased or moved into Iowa on 2/17/20 or after, and until July 25, 2020 will not pay penalties. We do not recommend waiting since the time-frame at the end of the proclamation to complete your business may not give you much time to do so. Polk County will not reopen buildings to the public before August 3rd. Watch our website for updates. If you have any additional questions, please email us back!

Can I register a newly purchasrd car in Iowa online

Anna Avant | Oct 24, 2020
Polk County Treasurer | Oct 24, 2020

Good morning, Anna. Good question. Right now you can only do the annual "renewal" on-line. You will need to go to your county treasurer in order to transfer a vehicle title. Make sure you have all your paperwork i.e.: title, bill of sale, and any other paperwork, if you purchased from a dealer, that they may have given you. All persons to be an owner will need to complete and sign an Iowa Application for Title/Registration. If you live in Polk County, we are open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday for title transfers.

If the title shows issue Date as 07/05/2018, what would the absolute LATEST date for renewal be?

Kathy Young | Oct 25, 2019
Polk County Treasurer | Oct 25, 2019

Hi, Kathy. The title issue date won’t have an effect on when the registration expires. In Iowa, the owner of a vehicle can select any month to be their registration month, regardless of when the title is issued. If you can provide the title number, license plate number, or VIN we could look into it for you. For sure a vehicle’s registration is valid for one month past the expiration date listed on the registration.

Can I pay for renewal with a credit card?

Kathy Young | Oct 25, 2019
Polk County Treasurer | Oct 25, 2019

Yes, there are service fees with the electronic payment options and they are higher with a debit card or credit card because we are not able to absorb the banking and credit card fees associated with those payment options. However, if you choose to pay by electronic check, which is simply an electronic withdrawal from your bank account, the service fees are only $0.30.

Make an appointment ( or plan on a 2hr wait to walk in) and bring your bank statement showing that the fee has been paid and have them at the very least print you a receipt to carry in your car. Although, I'm being if you do go in, they'll just get it all handled for you.

I need to register a vehicle I bought from an individual. What all do I need, and do I leave it in the drop box?

Justin Sorensen | Oct 24, 2021
Polk County Treasurer | Oct 24, 2021

We are open by appt for title transfers and move-ins. Other services are by a walk-in, first come/first serve basis. Please visit our appt site at www.polkcountyiowa.gov/treasurer. You can process title transfers by mailing your original documents or dropping in drop box at our south parking lot. Pls visit our web site for Move-ins OR Title Transfers, Transfer After a Death, and Trailers for more information. The website will give you instructions, links to DOT state forms that you will need, and a link to the DOT’s fee estimator tool to help estimate your transaction amount. Please include your phone # for questions or to pay additional fees. If you are having trouble getting an appointment it is important that you to submit your transaction to us in a timely manner another way such as through mail or drop box located at the front of our building parking lot level to avoid any late penalty. Include your daytime Phone # for questions and payment.

I bought a car and need to complete a title transfer to my name. On the website it says to enter appointment I must have all paperwork completed and with you what paperwork is this besides the title document itself and proof of identity.

How to get deed after spouse died & mortgage paid in full

Jamie Carroll | Oct 24, 2021
Polk County Treasurer | Oct 24, 2021

After you pay off your mortgage, the mortgage company is responsible for releasing the mortgage lien on the property. The release should be mailed to the property owner after it is recorded in the Recorder’s Office. Contact your mortgage company concerning release of the mortgage lien if you believe they have not done so yet. After a spouse passes away, the surviving spouse may file what is commonly known as ‘Affidavit of Surviving Spouse’ with the county recorder’s office. I found an example of an Affidavit of Surviving Spouse that was recorded on June 24, 2020 that begins on book and page 17907-988. You can search for this document from the following website by entering the book number of 17907 and page number of 988. https://landrecords.polkcountyiowa.gov/LandRecords/protected/SrchBookPage.aspx

Is it a new vehicle or one that you get every year.? If it's for a new vehicle I'd call and get an estimate for how much it will be for your T,T&L and either Mail your title and a Check or Money Order to the Treasurer or there is a Dropbox you can drop your title and payment. If it is already a vehicle you had registered before you should be able to renew them online. If you don't have the letter with the pin they send then you and use your old registration and they will show a image of where and what you need to enter in. Hope this info helps.😊

During this closure, is there still away to get non-personalized blackout plates since you cannot order them online?

Blake Bergstrom | Oct 24, 2020
Polk County Treasurer | Oct 24, 2020

To obtain the blackout plates, since we are closed to the public, you will need to mail $35 plus $3.00 postage/handling per vehicle or use our drop box in the front of the building. Include the plate number to the vehicle you want the plates on, a note to what type of plate you want i.e. Blackout or Heritage, etc., and a phone number in case we need to call you. You are required to mail your original plates back to our office so we can properly update the State motor vehicle system to cancel ownership of the plates out of your name and avoid illegal use of your old plates. Our address is 111 Court Ave, Rm 154, Des Moines, IA 50309-2298. It will cost $2.20 (or 4 $0.55 cent USPS stamps) for standard sized plates or $0.65 cents for a small motorcycle plate.

Do I have to keep current license on my Rv because it is in a permanent lot and will not pulled again. If I do have to keep license current can i put them in storage.

Lynda Christiansen | Oct 24, 2020
Polk County Treasurer | Oct 24, 2020

Lindy, Iowa law requires the registration to be kept current when it's parked or on the roads. You would need to check with the lot where you are keeping this to see if they patrol this or are exempt because of long term parking. If you want to put the plates in storage, they must be current. When putting a vehicle in to storage, you return the plates and registration to our office. You can mail them or use our drop box located outside the front of our building. Be sure to include a note that you want this put in to storage. Use our website: www.PolkCountyIowa.gov for address & phone #. Thank you.

If I lost my regular title can I get a junk title just so that I can junk my car?

Teresa Jones-negrete | Oct 24, 2020

Teresa, You may want to see if you can obtain a Demolisher’s Certificate from the Police Department. If you obtain the Demolishers, you will then bring that in to your county treasurer’s office for a junking certificate. You may possibly be able to dispose of your vehicle directly under the following law: Allows an owner of a motor vehicle to dispose of a vehicle to a licensed vehicle recycler for scrap or junk without surrendering a certificate of title or a junking certificate IF: a) the motor vehicle is twelve model years old or older AND b) the motor vehicle is sold to the vehicle recycler for less than one thousand dollars.
