So disappointing. Went here as a child, have taken my children. Took my grandchildren this past weekend. Hardly and animals in the zoo. A lot of the exhibits you where not sure if there were animals in them at all. I know the animals are not always out. But I'm not even sure they were there. Also had a dinosaur exhibit and a 3D movie cinema. Theses attractions were at extra cost. With all the loss of animals at the zoo the cost of theses other exhibits should be included in price of zoo ticket. One part of zoo I kept telling my grandkids about was the glass tunnel where you can watch polar bears. When we arrived at the tunnel. No bears just a lot of algae! Dirty nasty tunnels. Very dissatisfied with our visit will probably be our last. It's sad how things that were so beautiful are just falling away.

Had an amazing time! It was a ton of walking over 18k steps so wear proper shoes and ensure you bring strollers. Bathrooms are pretty few and far between depending and the lack of a paper map is confusing to say the least. But it’s definitely a good and fun experience!! Would definitely return!

The animals that were out were great but was disappointed by the lack of concession stands open and the fact that there were a lot of animals not even out. Went to see the flamingos and they were all locked in a small cage I'm the corner of the exhibit. Could just be because we went on a weekday and not a weekend or because of the construction but still wish we could've seen more. Still overall a great time and a good way to spend the day we family.

My husband and I visited the zoo today and we loved it! We lucked out with perfect weather so we saw 90% of the animals there. It’s a beautiful place, and we were happy to see big, enriching enclosures for animals. Lots of friendly staff and volunteers. Took us about 4 hours to make our way through everything. Highly recommend!
They have one tiger right now. Her name is Kisa. They are working on building a new habitat for her now, but don't worry she is still out in her old habitat.
Yes you can. We have plenty of places in the zoo for bday parties. Give a call to the zoo and see if you can get in touch with guest relations. They can get you to the right department. The bday parties are really the best here.
You have to go to the zoo website. You pick the time slot you want and pay for your tickets and parking. They are only selling so many tickets per day. So you have to buy online. We went a few weekends ago and were inside for several hours. There were other people but it wasn't crowded. Masks inside buildings or if you were close to others not in your group
I was there 3 weeks ago. The explanation is on the website. The arctic and red panda/tiger areas are being renovated. The only animals that are not viewable are the seals and the red panda. However for all the times I have been to the DZ, I have only seen the polar bear once, and never the red panda. I am super excited about the new habitats!! Those are the two habitats that I simply avoid generally because they are so dissapointing! Penguin habitat is amazing and don't miss the prarie dogs, kangaroos, gorillas, lemurs!, Giraffe, wolves, otters, zebras or the newly added wilderbeast. I also always look forward to the butterfly garden and aviary. I hope the lion and bear habitats will be updated soon too!

Yes they have tigers and they come real close to the glass. If the glass was not there you would be able to pet them. The penguin house is closed because it is being rebuilt and the butterfly exhibit is closed. You have to make reservations for the day and the time you need to be at the front gate. Bring masks as they are required in indoor exhibits and some outdoor areas. I was there August 9 th just for you to know how current my information is that I stated. I have posted photos, the animals were pretty active considering it was 90 and humid. Very pleasant experience as always.
Yes, it is $66 for an individual membership, $98 for an individual plus one unnamed adult or two named adults, $88 for a single parent + up to four children or one grandparent + up to four grandchildren, $112 for two adults + up to four grandchildren or + children under 18, or $203 for same privilege as family/grandparent level plus two unnamed guests each visit.
I'm actually not sure. I recommend buying the family membership and they can go anytime this year multiple times. 102 for a family of 4 and 112 for a family of 6.
I was looking at the price for tickets and why would the ticket prices be more expensive on the slower days? And they seem to increase each day?

Typically when your online purchasing the tickets, the closer they are to the present day (say I order the tickets for tomorrow) I wouldn't be saving any money, where as if I order it for 2 weeks from tomorrow, it should, realistically, save you a few dollars.
As to why the prices seem to increase more each day, it could be that those are getting to be peak days and that's why they're increasing. I suggest, if you have a kid or even if you don't, to get a membership. Within 3 trips to the zoo, the membership pay for themselves for even a single adult membership.
Easily. A group of 5 will be $78-98 depending on ages and assuming at least one adult (includes parking). What you do inside including food, drink, 4D shows, gifts, etc. is on top of that.
The exhibit itself is technically closed, but when you walk around the perimeter of the exhibit you can still see the polar bear. It's just a bit messy And limited.
Brown bears exibit red panda giraffes and tigers exibit are all under construction when i was there on april 18th they were also doing smtn to the wolverines area and there putting up the dinosaurs as well for may25th i think it is hope this helps if so click like
Yes, you need reservations generally. They are accepting a limited amount of walk-ins, however. I wouldn't risk it - the online reservation process is easy.
I went there this weekend. Open: most outdoor animals, birds, most reptiles, the otter, the Carousel. Closed: polar exhibit (it's open on the outside but you'll see nothing the whole time), butterfly house, penguin house, some food places,
The zoo has wheelchair, electric convenience vehicle, single and double strollers and wagons for rent. Single strollers are $7.00 each and the ECVs are $28.00. Other's are $10.00 each.
It depends on what you need help with. This time of year there are zookeepers pretty much everywhere. Ask one of them, they are always more than willing to help.
No there is not a "twilight" ticket discount. Especially with the arrival of Fall and shorter days ahead.. but there are plenty of discounts to be found elsewhere on the internet. just do a quick search and you should find ample discounts to take advantage of
Rebuilding tigers now the lions are there were very active when we went the other day got our tickets through bluecross blueshield online for $14.00 . I think reg is $18.00.
I don't remember seeing any elephants there. I checked their web site (they list all the animals they have) and didn't see elephants on the list. Still a great zoo, and the penguin exhibit is worth it.
There is the BELLE ISLE AQUARIUM not affiliated with the Detroit Zoo located on Belle Isle. It's now open Fri - Sun. Check out https://www.belleisleconservancy.org/belle-isle-aquarium for further details.
One loop around the Zoo can net you anywhere from 3,800 to 7,000 steps! A visit to animal habitats can up your step count so you can easily spend the entire day there if you take your time enjoying the various animals exhibits & other attractions like the theater, train, carousel etc..

Someone bought us a zoo membership for Christmas but my husband lost the “gift certificate” (the piece of paper with our names on it. Is our name in the system or did we lose out on it since he lost the paper?

You may have to contact the member services directly to see if they can help. They should be able to help you sort it out of your names are on file on the system (which I imagine they are on a membership).

The website has all prices. But I definitely recommend that you go. They have done recent improvements and it's a great place and lots to do. I do recommend going in the spring. If you go when it's too hot or too cold most animals are seeking shelter for shade and in the fall they take some animals out due to the weather. But there are exhibits for birds, butterflies, reptiles that are enclosed. They also have a 3d/4d theater. And a few places to eat. Foods a little pricey so if your on a budget pack a lunch and blanket. There's plenty of picnic area and picnic tables. And bring water, it's a big place. You will get thirsty lol. Have fun!
The tiger exhibit is closed for remodeling but you can see most of the animals. Rhinos, primates, and giraffes are inside during colder days but you can still see them inside. Apparently kangaroos and wallabies will only come out in the cold if it's sunny though.
Yes, they are! Plus, you can always check their website to double check if WildLights is open on days with inclemate weather.

I have read a lot of comments saying many animals are not viewable at this time. I live 2 hours away and don’t want to pay the money and waste my time. What animals are not available at this time?
From April to September 3 their hour are from 9am to 5pm. Then from September 4th to the 30th they are open 10am to 5pm. From October to March their hour are from 10am to 4pm.
wheelchairs and Electronic Convenience Vehicles (ECV) are available for rent at the Main Train Station (near the front of the park) and at the Africa Train Station (in the far corner of the park when the train is operating).
Yes, battery ones but did not notice any push wheelchairs but that doesn't mean they did not have any, also they do have strollers and wagons for rent also.

Can you go to gift shop without buying a zoo ticket ?
You can hold whatever you need. We always have a cooler bag with our drinks and cold food. a backpack for the kids things etc. If you don't have a stroller or wagon you'll probably want a backpack to easily carry your things and to be more comfortable.
The zoo will stay open. The red pandas are off for renovation, the design looks like it's going to be really cool. Rhinos and giraffes if end up inside because of the rain you can see them inside behind their exhibits.
We were just there Monday and they didn't really say. It looks like there is still a lot to do. You can walk through part of it and see them if they are out. We didn't see them however but it was quite hot.
I have a family membership for $99. When I go to the zoo I bring our own food and drinks. Yesterday I spent $15 to ride the train and see the Dinosaurs. The membership includes parking.
Not sure about the animals but they do have scotters and wheelchairs that you can rent. Scotters are $15 and wheelchairs are $10 wagons are $10 double strollers are $10
I believe they do. According to their website: A family of nine American beavers resides at the Jane and Frank Warchol Beaver Habitat on the northern edge of the Cotton Family Wetlands.
What is the advantage to buying tickets online? There is no discount the past 3 days. Is there a shorter line once you arrive at the zoo?
Crystal Callander | Jan 1, 2019
Krystal HenryRuss | Jan 2, 2019
Its usually a couple dollars cheaper online. It doesn't get you in faster though. If you go at least twice a year a membership is the best way to go, parking would be included, and there's a second entrance for members only.
Yup. We bring a cooler and snacks every time because the food and drinks there are so expensive. They have picnic tables spread all around the zoo so you can sit and eat. If you have smaller kids i HIGHLY recommend buying a wagon so 1) they can ride in it and 2) it is very convenient to carry your stuff
Back in 2015 the last 2 elephants at the Detroit zoo were sent to a refuge in California. Due to the amount of walking they do and our harsh winters it was in the best interest of the elephants to be moved.
Science Discoverys Animal Encounter Shows | Jan 2, 2019
No, they dont do that kind of promotion anymore. It is 49 bucks per person for a Mothers Day brunch. They have 3 meal times. They are sold out for the brunch. You do get a bit of a discount if you live in Wayne, Oakland or Macomb county.
Like mentioned above when its warm out is best time i get lucky here and there to see them swim but mostly they are walking around looking all tired and worn out as for the seal tanks being drained they were cleaning them they do that every few months best bet is get a membership and go when ever u can u will catch em swimming here and there. I know not much help srry. Have a nice day
I've been to both. Toledo Zoo is more compact, less walking between each exhibit. The aquarium alone is worth the admission. They have a fabulous polar bear exhibit, and their elephants, hippos, & tigers are fun to see. Unfortunately, they no longer have lions, which Detroit DOES still have (though they can be hard to see). The animals are typically easier to view at Toledo versus Detroit.
Detroit zoo, as many have pointed out, does indeed have more exhibits, including Lion's, monkeys, reptile & amphibian houses, & much more; I haven't sent it yet but I've heard their new penguin exhibit is fantastic. However, it is a LOOOONNNG WALK & it is not flat, like Toledo. So, if you have impatient littles, Detroit may not be the zoo for you. If you are looking for somewhere to walk and get some physical activity while enjoying the animals around you, Detroit is perfect. You can go entirely through the Toledo Zoo in about 2 hours, you need at least 3-4 to walk the entirety of the Detroit zoo.
They have otters, seals, and an excellent penguin exhibit. However, they do NOT have an aquarium. The Toledo zoo has a great aquarium if you want to see fish, etc.
They have them at night.

We,ve been to the zoo before but we were not able to see the polar bears, are they more likely to show up with the cold weather? we want to come this weekend. Thanks!
Elizabeth Trueba | Jan 1, 2019
Jeff VanNieulande | Jan 2, 2019
They are more likely to show up in the cold weather. They're a lot more active in the cold and in the morning, so go early!
Yes, they have mobility options. I want to say they have scooters to rent, but i would confirm that by calling. It's definitely worth the effort--we have a great zoo!
