There were lots of squirrels on top and in the canyons. Lizards were everywhere. Birds of all kinds and elk up along the south rim.....

Yes, there were a lot of elk in the mornings by the hotel and there are a bunch of squirrels.

I think it depends on the time of year. We were there over July 4th and saw a decent amount of wildlife. Deers and some momma and baby elks, lots of squirrels and lizards, a few rabbits and birds.
