Leave time to tour the town of Turkey, TX. It is the home of Bob Wills, the father of Western Swing. If you are in to tourist traps and kitsch then you could eat at The Big Tex. But we have better food and it is long on show, short on substance. At the Canyon (Palo Duro), If you are good at hiking and like it, allow yourself a good amount of time to Hike the Lighthouse Trail. Snakes should be gone by then so it will be a good hike. Bring night hiking gear and a tri-pod with you. The night sky is gorgeous especially if we have High pressure over the area when you are here. But the moon over the hoodoos will make great pics, also sunsets can be stunning, but if you stay late enough to photograph during the golden hour you will be coming back in the dark, hence the need for headlamp. But the trail is well marked and mostly broad. Other shorter day hikes available. (Fortress and any that take you by the bluffs along the river). But dont think broad rivers like you have there.
I would do some homework so you'd know what your priorities are. Both ranger stations are well worth visiting. Palo Duro is much larger with a small museum. There is a dugout. Caprock is much smaller but has some nice trails with buffalo everywhere. I wouldn't do both the same day unless you are just driving through.
I took some great pictures at Cap rock as well as White sands. Beautiful place. The buffaloes decided to travel the road while we were there which was great to see.
I should have talked to you before visiting. Missed some stuff. Honey, road trip! We need to go back to Texas!
