No, you can easily see them from the visitors center and the road.

No, you can see them from a distance but the best view is from the top. Also the first portion of the dunes is pretty hard sand that is easy to walk on.

Yes but it is a very short hike. In the spring, you my have to cross a shallow run off area.

Was just there yesterday. Actually, you can see the dunes from miles away. And you can get great views up close anywhere in the National Park. The visitors center is oriented for a great view complete with Park rangers to answer any questions. Truly a spectacular place .
