From the Native American tribes that inhabited the area.

The park is named in honor of the tribe that inhabited Green Bay's shores and island s when the Europeans first settled the area. The tribe called themselves Bo-Do-Wad-Me which means "keeper of the fire". Eventually the spelling and the pronunciation were changed to Potawatomi. (Source: dnr.wi.gov/topic/parks/name/potawatomi/)
