Take the half day to drive around and visit the site near the road. Use the full day to do one of the many hikes between the lakes.
Walk up Lassen peak. It takes about 2 to 3 hrs up.
climb up the peak if you can - the view is absolutely awesome from up top and the top of the volcano is very neat to see, but start super early if the weather is warm (hats, water, food and sunscreen are musts, and proper hiking shoes (i.e. with good soles) will help because it is very rocky up top
Kings Creek falls is a beautiful hike and isn't as strenuous as Lassen Peak.
We just drove through on our trip and stopped at the information buildings along the way. We had lunch at a picnic table we found along the roadside and just stopped when we wanted to. Unfortunately the museum and information building at the end was closed by the time we got there. But we learned so much just by taking our time and checking things out. Make sure to check out the mud pots I have never seen anything like it anywhere else
There are many trails to hike. You can visit mud pots, kayak/canoe, drive to the campground and visit the lakes.
