SO MANY CATS, SO MANY TOES
Eric Machac
Really fun tour of Hemingway's old abode. He wrote most of his works here, and you get a cool view of the writing desk and his office. The grounds are lush, and well kept. A 100% must do in Key West. I mean where else can you see polydactyl cats drinking out of a urinal while peering through the trees at a lighthouse in the distance?

There are so many kitties being very well taken care of. Between the history of Hemingway and his gorgeous house, the kitties, and the vegetation you can’t go wrong! Please seriously consider visiting!

It’s a cool place to see whether you are or aren’t a Hemingway fan. You can take a 30 minute tour or tour on your own but I’d recommend the tour to get some Hemingway anecdotes. We’ll maintained and informative with lovely gardens to sit for a minute.

They are spoiled rotten here. There are currently 57 cats that are all named and there is a veterinarian that visits daily to take care of them. They have the run of the home and the gardens but are not allowed outside the property. They are population controlled and many are polydactyls but not all. I have never seen such spoiled cats. They are great fun to watch and take pictures of.
It's my understanding that the the cats are smart and spoiled. When a storm is in the air the cats instincts
It's been reported in various news articles that they wouldn't be able to get over 50 feral cats rounded up into stop and go traffic for hours in over 90 degree weather. The people are staying now to try to protect the cats.
Wild animals inbreed all the time. The six toes come from a mutation in the cats' genes which about half of the offspring will have 6 toes. The cats are healthy.
The color of the room is actually Razzmatazz
So how many claws on front and how many on rear?
No picking them up, but if you sit down anywhere outside it wont take long for those playful polydactal cats to hop in your lap.
All our cats are born and raised here at the museum. They are all decedents of Mr. Hemingway's first polydactyl cat and the polydactyl gene is a recessive gene. With all that being said we keep a select few kittens who are born un-spayed and unneutered to keep the genetic line going. With all our cats having the polydactyl gene we get 50% of the kittens from the new litter will be born with the extra toe. We have a book that tells us who the family lineage of all our cats and our veterinarians help us with the breeding process as well.
This is a question you should ask their Vet by using your phone to call them. My guess would be no, the cats that are their are from their and spayed nurtured to assure the breed, an outside feline would contaminate the legacy despite what you were told of the origin of your cat
Oh yeah, special section for your wedding too, with a small stage and pergola. Very intimate setting. 😃
Blue Macaw is fun. Pretty place. Live music-not too loud. Roof top deck, for more privacy.
We have seen the kitchen, it is so "Vintage" (old style).. This house and the beautiful tropical garden... are so marvellous,. We feel great émotion !! à french 🗼 🇫🇷 tourist..
I'm sorry but we do not judge cats based on the color of their fur, breedist.
I believe the news report said that they were brought inside.
The cats go outside landscaping team does the dirty work. Cats are happy and we'll taken care of. Amazing team of people working behind the scenes I go there every year and learn something new.
Please do not bring cat nip on the property. It results in some of our cats having a negative reaction and we often have to seek vet attention for them when it happens.
There's shade on the streets outside. I highly doubt they'll let you bring your dog onto the property on account of the cats
Just saying. If you come with a family 👪 you don't carry cash around like an armored truck. You pull out the 💳 card . I would think the museum could make a lot more profits if they accepted the card. We passed it up because we didn't want to go find an out-of-network ATM & pay their service fees for cash 💸 . especially after we had already found & paid for parking. In this day and age there are just very FEW places that refuse credit card anymore. you don't expect it 😱
The cats are pretty laid back, but I didn't witness them interacting with anyone but humans. I can't imagine the Visitor Center hasn't fielded this question before, so here's hoping for the best. I hope you get to visit!
I would allow 2 hours. Especially if going to do the guided tour!
The house is full of cats I do not think they will let it
You can't change the name of his residence
No, unfortunately not. Unless you're a cat, 'cause they accomodate plenty of cats... :)
There are dozens of cats that also sit on sofas and sleeping beds. I don't think that's the case.
No, it is not accessible to wheelchairs, other than the gardens, perhaps. Unfortunately, given the age of the structure, its historical significance (even predating Ernest Hemingway's association with it), it is unlikely that this can change. Hemingway's writing studio, in a separate outbuilding, is on the second floor, up a narrow stairway.
No definitely not, there are cats roaming all over the property.
Aren't the hours listed on website? I think that's where I found them and found out it was cash only for admission.
The second floor is not handicapped accessible. I have MS, but it could walk up the stairs with not too much trouble. The grounds are accessible.
The Little White House offer package deal for entrance to Hemingways house AND the Little White House at a discounted rate plus you can pay with credit card
The streets are packed with cars. Frankly it is better to walk around Key West than drive.
We visited Hemingway House over Christmas. We took a tour. The tour guide said that Paula, Hemingway's ex-wife, sold the house when he passed away. She wanted it to remain in the family, but no one wanted it. So she sold it to an estate place, and then the local historical society bought it in its entirety. That is why the original furniture and grounds remain on the site. So said the tour guide. Supposedly, all the cats on the property are descendants of the original polydactyl cat, owned by Hemingway's two sons. The cats are very friendly and are well taken care of. The tour costs $14 apiece, and is well worth it!
All fences down, one tree down, three roof tiles blown away
I don't know. I heard they were fine. I visited there a couple weeks ago.
Nope. Its the same home that the original owner built. Except that they added air conditioning last year.
Unfortunately the staff were forced to stay at the house during hurricane Irma, however, the cats were allowed to return to their homes as they were relieved of their duties. So to answer your question, yes.
Cats , people and house all good
I asked and they said that they used the powers of climate change to scare the hurricane away from the house.
They are all just fine!
Maybe more unsettling to them than staying in place. I hope they made the correct decision
