The beauty of this raw wild environment is really undescribable. Climbing a 4000 footer feels like you're on top of the world, with endless waterfalls, rivers, lakes, and mountains, I've spent all summer here for years and continue to find somewhere new. Despite the popularity of the well known places you can still manage to find solitude deep in the forest.

I mean how do you rate the entire White Mountain national Forest. It's one of the most beautiful places on the East coast, if not the entire country. No matter whether you're looking for a beginner Trail or something incredibly challenging you can definitely find it in the White Mountain national Forest. You can spend years if not most of your life trying to redline all the trails. Even if hiking isn't your thing there are so many scenic overlooks right off the road they can get a real sense of the grander of these mountains without ever stepping foot on any of the trails.

Autumn colors / fall foliage extravaganza!! If you time your trip right, you'll be stunned by miles and miles of vibrant autumn over the mountains and through the forests. Every corner looks picturesque as you drive through nature's display. Recommend to get a car with a sunroof or a convertible. There are several overlooks and pullouts on these forest roads to safely photograph the views. A trip to the summit of Mt. Washington (not free) is a good anchor point for exploring this region. This year, peak autumn was around October 9th (apparently, a week before expected). Download offline maps of the region as connectivity is spotty.

Hiked up to Liberty Springs. Quite honestly almost didn't make it, but we did. It was a far harder hike than I anticipated, with a large part of that being mental - it is steep, very rocky, and then for good measure it seems someone decided to add even more rocks and make it steeper. We didn't leave enough time, thinking how could three miles take us much longer than three hours or so? But, it did. As darkness fell, the younger in our group (15 & 20) took off ahead to at least find the campsite and get us set up, while my wife and I (52 & 53) proceeded to hike by flashlight. Thankfully we weren't one day later or it would be have been pouring. We used Liberty Springs as a base camp, having a very short day hike the next day to the most stunning views we'd seen in a long long time. So beautiful and so expansive. One last practical thing: I, personally, totally botched my clothes packing, somehow leaving my cold weather gear back home. It rained and was in the high 40s (F) at night. I had to hunker down in my sleeping bag for warmth, while the others enjoyed time outside the tent. To summarize: hard hike, amazing views, pack for cold and warm weather.

According to their website "Most White Mountain National Forest lands are open and free of charge for your use and enjoyment". So where can we park our small camper vans without any hookups/ other services so we don't need a parking pass or pay fees?
Yes I think it's worth it to visit anytime of the year. They've already had some snow fall up there so you'll see some of those views. If you're looking to visit for the foliage, then I'd say wait till next fall. We went up there second week of October and although some parts were still in prime fall colors, as ww head further north we could see we caught the end of the season. And actually even back then, the top of the auto road was closed because of heavy snow so I'm assuming if you go up late November, you'll see some beautiful snowy mountains.
-36° F, -38°C, the wind chill being -94°F, -70°C.
Yes.
Yes, as long as you follow Backwoods Camping rules. Look it up if you are unfamiliar with them.
Yes
Yes u need a hunting license and a permit for the game and weapons that are allowed during that time
Not a clue! The White Mountain National Forest isn't a single little spot on the map. It covers many towns hundreds of miles of roads, some towns in two states.
I suppose you can. Lost River has bags of dirt you can buy to pan so if you can find out where get their dirt.
I think to park anywhere, you need a parking pass!
Typically no. The National Parks are operated by the US Park Service aka National Parks (Department of Interior) and the US Forest Service (National Forests) falls under the Department of Agriculture. Because they are two different organizations, their passes are not typically interchangeable. The Parks pass however DOES work at some state parks, but you’ll want to check with the specific state park before heading out. Hope this helps!
No idea, I hike and camp, don't stay in campgrounds
Right around September peak foliage is Octoberish
There are many campsites. You'd have to call around and see if any have an opening. They fill up pretty quick.
White Mountain National Forest is a very large area. It encompasses many summits other than Washington
Haystack dispersed camping has some Verizon 4g. And some places on Gale river . Bit limited
yes some facilities might be closed but you could check their website for specific locations and hours
Yes it does
satanist or not, I'm not sure I understand your question. I don't believe that the park or the mountains close for labor Day weekend. Although I wouldn't recommend visiting as it is extremely crowded.
Yes in valleys and low wetlands there will be bugs mostly black fles
Clint, you have a couple of options to start with, but I assume you already explored these:. nhstateparks.org is a website with info, as well as googling white mountains camping. Sorry my info is limited, but we "camp" in a park model RV, and while we've visited many of the national parks in the last 3 years, neither of us are hikers. Hope this helps.
There are 137 trails from 1.3 miles to 18.6 miles they range from 412 ft to 6272 ft hope this helps
Drew, there are plenty of areas to do this. There are areas of the Forest where such things are prohibited also. Common sense and a little research will help you with the best location. Gl
They are visible from late August to early April
Hunting is allowed on all White Mountain National Forest Lands including Wilderness areas pursuant to state regulations. State hunting licenses are required to hunt on National Forest land. Hunting on private land within the National Forest is prohibited without permission of the landowner.
The Kancamagus Highway is the best views year round, especially to see the leaves change colors.
Yeah they're there but I've spent a lot of time up there haven't seen any.
There's also Fransted Campgrounds a little pricier but has a lot going on. Free hot showers. Laundry, nice selection of campgrounds. Secluded ones and ones by the river. People that own it are very friendly, right by FRANCONIA NOTCH and all highways to the other state parks. They have horseshoes, a playground for kids, community bonfires as well as bonfires at each campsite. I believe volleyball and/or basketball hoops.
No. Coyotes, moose and black bear live in NH but no wolves.
Boy! That is really hard to say...what i would do is get the $25 parking pass at any of the Ranger stations (easy to find online). I would ask them for suggestions, they're very knowledgeable and extremely helpful. My favorite easy hike is Dianah's Bath, 30 minutes in, a fairly long "stair step" of falls with interesting geological features. A little crowded but worth it. Grest picnic area (no tables, no fires, adjust accordingly) Go beyond the falls for gentle climbs and far less crowding. Next, talk to everyone that you see, people who spend time in the woods take the time to talk to others you'll be amazed at the friendliness of 90% of the people up here. The people from up-tight cities even get more open/talkative up here (Nature does that to people).. You will get lots of useful information that way. All in all, bring a camera andgo for it, you and yours will have fond memories for a long time. ENJOY!
Depends on were you r and how dry it is. Lot of it is fed forest. Nationsl parks..need do some good planning and talking to people.
Year round, and it cost us $5 to park/ hike in there. Unless you have one of the passes.
Some free, some paid as others have mentioned. Bring cash as almost all pay lots are self serve with envelopes and a drop box
New Hampshire state bird is the purple finch.
