There's plenty of places of the kancamangus you can primitive camp. Just follow the fire restrictions and be behaved and you won't have a hard time.

They have state owned campgrounds. Lafayette campground is right on Franconia Notch Parkway. It is right on the river. About 2 hours from Boston.

Yes it's a national forest but like they said you have to respect the rules.

Yes, but there are some areas where there us a lot of visitors so fires are not allowed. Very beautiful year round and some good, rugged hiking.
