There's plenty of places of the kancamangus you can primitive camp. Just follow the fire restrictions and be behaved and you won't have a hard time.
They have state owned campgrounds. Lafayette campground is right on Franconia Notch Parkway. It is right on the river. About 2 hours from Boston.
