We live about 40 minutes from Kankakee River State Park. We decided to go camping this weekend, the campground is very well maintained, campground was clean, bathrooms were clean, and special thanks to Camp Hosts, Tom and Tammy. Large sites, easy back in, fire racks/pits in each site, electric at most if not all sites. Lots of family’s enjoying a beautiful weekend, and tons of out of state license plates, which is always a plus. We walked the walking/bike trail Friday evening and we were greeted by some baby fawns, and a really cool spider web. The only negative I would have to say, I had to call support to make reservations, and they set us up in the Chippewa Campground, which was closed. Make sure your reservation is at the Potawatomi Campground not the Chippewa Campground. We will definitely be returning for more enjoyable weekends.

Beautiful area abundant wildlife. Many rock formations and little caves dispersed throughout. The river has a good current and some white water in a few areas, but just as many shallow shelly areas to walk in. Large harmless snakes and pretty wildflowers. People left garbage and fishing hooks all over the place so be careful if u have small children, pets, or go barefoot..best to bring water shoes with. Def coming back but I really wish it was open later than 8 so we could at least watch the sunset

Pretty awesome sate park with incredible views. You can fish, walk trails, kayak, bike, and more. Theres pinic areas and some playgrounds along with several camping areas. Theres also horse trails. Just a great park overall.

Really cool and beautiful state park an hour or so southwest of Chicago. This park stretches nearly 10 miles along the Kankakee river. A paved biking/running path stretches the entire way, making it a great destination for a day or biking …

River Kayaking is usually good. Watch out for High Water and Floating Debris. Life Vests & Head Protection a Must. Let other Family Members know your plans and Route.
A few but remember it's Illinois. There is a main bike bath paved and there are some dirt paths that venture off. By archery there are a few also. Which is at the beginning of the bike path. Those are mostly hunter and cross country skiing trails. The scenery for all these trails is woods. The only spot you'll come across cliffs is by main park. It's a swinging green bridge. The Chippewa hike is pretty. Parts are mowed path way parts are beaten path.
Not any more, the campground has been closed for a number of years, not sure why.
No. You can go down to water by big green bridge and go wading.
Not full hook-up, electric only. There is a dump station and a place to fill up water there. Don't try to fill up in the loops because you can't reach the water as all standpipes are behind campsites.
There are several bbq grills , but only 3 have pavilions. To be safe I would definitely reserve a pavilion, otherwise it's first come first served . You could do it all online otherwise the office will have all the information.
You can bring your own kayaks, but we always use Reed's canoeing trips, they offer kayaks as well and pick up and drop off. Reedscanoetrips.com
Get out there now before the mosquitoes get too bad. Should be fine for a few more weeks.
I believe that is true that the campground will reopen, but that is still a long ways away.
And
The state campgrounds have been closed for a while. There are a few local places nearby.
There's a small store about half way down Altorf road for bait and other small essentials. You can get there by going past the main entrances on 113. As far as fishing shore go whenever you think the fish will bite!
Ok! Theyre a little hard to find cause theyre not on the map provided at the welcome center. Go to the parking lot next to the green suspension bridge. You cross over a busy road (there is no crosswalk, you gotta make a run for it). Theres kind of a clearing/open path area, on one half theres a gate with a sign that says no parking emergency vehicle access. This is the entrance. Jf you walk down that path you will eventually be able to see the waterfall. You'll walk at most a mile to see it. If you want to get closer, you can climb down towards the river, but its very steep so be careful!
Fishing here is great there are largemouth bass smallmouth bass crappie Bluegill Sunfish catfish ect....
Best place is to meet at rock creek across the street . Smaller area that's consolidated . You will find your person.
Please don't. Too many children here and it's illegal in IL. You can however carry a camera and take wonderful photos of nature. You can carry a water bottle and get some fresh air.
There is a trading post just outside the park, idk what the cost is there. We had to buy wood from Lowes and it was roughly $7 a bundle and decent sized. The wood from Circle k is garbage. There are small handmade signs posted on telephone poles with a umber for a local wood person as well. Idk how much those are
All depends if someone was there the night before
6:30 a.m. my bad
When I was there 2 weeks ago. It was. I'd call the park office to confirm now.
Going west on hwy 102, pass up co rd 500 and the north park loop rd, then turn left into the park. Park your car in any lot and walk west on the paved pathway along the river. . You'll go thru an old covered bridge and after the next picnic area, you'll use a suspension bridge his over Rock Creek. From there the path goes by forest and river scenery for miles and miles.
Shouldnt be a problem .
It's State Park so it's open to all. There are not posted restrictions regarding quantity of persons.
Never been there that late at night so I don't know
Yes you can. You definitely have to have a fishing license and know the laws of the fish size and limitations for Illinois.
Yes it's open already the park is really clean for you to go on the water
There are no cabins or trailers to rent, and both campgrounds at the park have been closed for several years.
Playgrounds at the park remain closed, as are the picnic areas.
Yes
This is not the place to pan for gold --- the Kankakee River is deep, and the riverbed is covered with plant life and the large and small stone remnants of a number bridges. On top of which, it was a major trade route for 100s of years --- so, whatever small amount of precious metals might have been there in the past are long gone.
Yes, if you don't try to use a park ramp.
Some of the areas are open for daytime camping but you can call the ranger station at the State Park there's probably someone there until 4 Saturday maybe Sunday
I've seen some spots, maybe someone at the Kankakee river trading post would know more
I drive by every day and both campgrounds are closed. Your tax dollars at work. ☹️
Sorry but I don't have any personal experience there. I do drive by it everyday, and it appears to be ok. A bit too close to the highway for me though.
Any time you decide to swim in a river you need to be aware of the speed of the water. Even shallow water can knock you off your feet if it's strong enough. People seem to forget that rivers move and lakes don't.
I don't think there is a need to call someone's question stupid.
not at the park. reed's in kankakee rents canoes & offers different canoe trip options
