The limestone caverns has an lower and an upper chamber, it is still owned by a private citizen, but is open for the public and managed by CA state. You will take two bus rides and two ferries to get to the caverns, inside, it has some climbing to do. I visited Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico early this year, that one is much bigger and grander, but this one is worth the visit on the west coast. Cheers!

A beautiful day for traversing Lake Shasta and exploring the spectacular caverns. Every staff member we encountered was knowledgeable and friendly. From check in to the gift shop to the two bus rides, the boat ride and the actual tour, it was remarkable and delightful. If you want a full tour with guide we recommend you avoid holiday weekends. We will definitely be back!

A fun experience that includes a boat ride and a bus ride to the caverns. There will be stairs! Quite a few of them actually and you'll be walking up hill for a good chunk, just FYI.

Easy to find and worth the 2 hours to tour. Pinky, the tour guide, was full of facts and very enthusiastic. The gift shop has great gifts and coffee with clean bathrooms. This is a wonderful family outing and they offer a military discount.

Hey, Sachi. I actually work there. The smoke has affected the air quality, but it has massively improved on the lake this week. Either way, the caverns are open for labor day weekend with more frequent tours in fact. I hope to see you there! 😊
We love your spelunking enthusiasm! Although we do have many "off trail," we do not offer wild cave tours currently. If you are looking for a wild caving experience you may contact the Shasta-Trinity National Forest Service to see if they are allowing entrance into one of the other raw caves on Forest Service land. Their front desk number is 530-275-1587
Starting May 4th we offer dinner cruises on Shasta lake every Saturday. You'll need to call a couple days in advance to reserve a spot. Buffet style dinner on a patio boat cruising Shasta lake.
They do have a seasonal schedule so I would suggest calling or looking at it online.
We love all kinds of fur-babies! Only some of them are allowed on the tour though. We do allow Service Animals, Emotional Support Animals and small animals (small enough to carry through the entire tour) will be allowed with their family on the cave tour. However, if you have a larger animal, we offer FREE kennels and other options to care for your animals while you are on the tour. We keep a close eye on the pets and ensure they have water and food (if the owners allow) as well as being comfortable!
We are not associated with the California State Park system. Lake Shasta Caverns is privately owned and operated, therefore we do not honor the Golden State Pass.
The caverns are dated at least 200 million years, and were formed by flowing water. Over the years this water drained leaving the caverns seen today. The caves are made entirely of limestone and feature a wide variety of formations, including stalactites, stalagmites, soda straws, columns, and flowstone.
From their gift shop or through their website.
The tour is only about 45 min.. About 200 steps to walk up.. It's not that bad at all.. And it's pretty cheap.. Boat ride across the lake, bus ride to the cave, tour guide, bus back, boat ride back, all for under $20 or so.. Kids are cheaper.. It's awesome.. We go a few time a year just for fun.. Great pictures and fun time.. Enjoy!!!
For 2018, the cost is $28 for ages 16 and older, $16 for ages 3 through 15.
Just visited on Jul 5th and they are fully open.
It maybe hard to get to the waterfront, plus I believe it was 800 steps or so..
Yes, but you'll have to carry it a long way down... go to Wiskeytown lake. Much easier access. :)
No I did not get a senior discount even though I am 56 years old I didn't even ask for it but I will say there were some folks that were older than I am there and they seem to be enjoying themselves even though they moved a lot slower than everybody else
Yes they do.
We are closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas days, but open the rest of the year. The only other time we will close is due to weather (such as high winds, snow or ice). Currently it looks as if the weather is going to be beautiful for Thanksgiving 2020 ans the days surrounding it. We have already been staffing up in estimation that it will be busy and we will be opening more tours on the surrounding days to accommodate larger crowds but still remaining compliant with COVID protocols.
All year. On their website they show the fall/winter hours. I believe it's 3x a day now. Hope that helps.
We are closed on Thanksgiving Day, but we are opened on the days surrounding it!
While they do have a very nice gift shop that is wheelchair and scooter accessible, the cave tour does require the user to take a boat, a bus, a fairly steep hill and numerous steps including in a cave. This is very unfortunately not one for individuals with mobility limitations. I'm sorry about that.
Yes. Is a large parking lot but the road to get to it is narrow and winding
There are about 500 steep steps to climb and descend. It is a strenuous hike to see the cave. They do have a bailout point for those not up to the climb.
No you buy tickets and ferry across to the caves.
Right now, every half hour from 9 AM to 4 PM. April, May, and September every half hour from 9 AM to 3 PM. October to March 10 AM, 12 PM, and 2 PM. Labor day, fourth of July, and memorial day has self paced tours leaving every 15 minutes from 9 AM to 4 PM.
Good morning Sheri! Current pricing for the 2019 year is $30 for adults (ages 16 + up), $18 for juniors (ages 3 - 15), 2 and under are free of charge. This admission fee includes the boat ride across the McCloud arm of Shasta Lake, the 15 minute scenic bus ride taking you 850' above Shasta Lake, an hours guided tour of the caverns and the return trip!
It all depends on the size of the oxygen machine/tank as well as an individuals physical abilities. We have had people navigate the cavern tour with machines that seemed to do very well. We even had one gentleman that carried a larger tank with a dolly through the cave and did absolutely fine! We do have a turnaround point in the lower half for those who want to try but are not able to make it through the rest of the tour. At least this way one can still see a good portion of the cave.
There is still a cost associated with the bus ride and tour of the caverns. We do not allow foot traffic on the 2 mile road from the shoreline to the caverns as it presents a safety hazard due to the buses driving up and down the road. The courtesy dock is free and we allow the use of it with small boats and patio boats. Houseboats may use the shoreline north of the dock to gain access to the bus parking area and small gift store.
We do not have a camp ground on the property but 2 miles away, off of Shasta Caverns Road there is Bailey's Cove Campground. For a total list of campgrounds in the area you can follow this link from the Shasta-Trinity National Forest web site and see all of the campgrounds withing the area. https://www.fs.usda.gov/activity/stnf/recreation/camping-cabins/?recid=6418&actid=29
We will run during the rain. We only shut down due to high winds (30+ mph), lightning strikes within the area, snow and/or ice. This weekend we are only looking at rain with a chance of winds. We suggest during weather events that people call us the morning of their visit to get the most recent update on weather.
It's best to call them to find out.
Yes we are! In fact we are offering a special treat for all moms on Mother's Day. Moms will get free admission, a picture with their family or group and a complimentary flower. All in appreciation for what they have done for all of us through out the years.
They give a walk through so you can see everything
We are opened every day of the year with the exception of Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day!
The cavern is famously only closed for two days a year. Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.
No you do not. All tickets are on a first come, first serve basis. Weather may impact tours so we do suggest calling before you arrive 1-800-795-2283
on the tour I took they said they were open everyday except Xmas if I remember right
I would call and ask. My opinion is yes, might effect.
It is not impacted by government shutdown
it really depends on your physical health. anybody with knee problems or back problems might find it very arduous..you've got to travel in upward straight staircases approximately 300 feed at different stages, not all at one time but at different stages so if you have no problems climbing stairs then the Shasta caverns is a wonderful wonderful tour. !
We are closed Thanksgiving and Christmas so that our employees can spend time with their families. However we do stay open all other days of the year!
The Golden Park pass is good for all government owned parks. Although Lake Shasta Caverns is a National Natural Landmark, it is actually a privately owned attraction and does not honor state or federal passes.
The 2018 rates are: Adults ages 16 and up are $28 Juniors (3-15) are $16 2 and under are free of charge (but need to be counted) Adult Year Pass are $70 (unlimited visitation + one free pass every visit) Junior Year Pass are $40 (unlimited visitation + one free junior pass for each visit)
Registered Service animals are allowed, as well as friendly pets that can be carried for the whole tour. For larger animals we have kennels free of charge. We will check on your pets while you are on the tour. Please DO NOT leave pets unattended in your car while you're on the tour. Ask our store clerk for assistance.
We do allow infants and even had a few just months old. We only front pack carriers as we want the infant's head in front of you. Most 3 1/2 years can make the tour with very little assistance or carrying. There are several different rooms that we stop and discuss the tour. This provides an opportunity for children and adults to sit down before heading to the next room.
I think $28 for adults and $18 for juniors. Check the website. Worth every dollar!
During summer the last tour is 4pm
Thank you I ended up calling the tour lasts 2 hours and is free to all mothers today.
They have different hours for summer vs. winter. I would call them or visit the website.
