Loved the grounds. Staff made a mistake with our check in, but were more than willing to offer their help to relocate us, which we declined. They then gave us a couple bundles of firewood for the inconvenience. Considering the cost of firewood in the area, it wasn't too bad of a deal. As far as the campground itself, it is nice and peaceful. We awoke to a sumphony of singing birds every morning at sunrise, which was kind of magical to be honest. Deer were plentiful during our visit as well. The bathrooms were clean and the showers were alright also, even if the water took a few minutes to warm up. Would definitely stay here again.

The campground was amazing. It was clean and our lot was very roomy. Everyone at the park was very courteous and helpful. We went to Big Meadow for stargazing but you could totally see the milky way and everything at the campsite as well. Just have to stay up until 2-3am when everyone is asleep.

The CG is first come, first served during April. Price is $30/night tent or RV. We got a nice site in C loop that enabled us to get good Starlink coverage. Rangers are excellent, and park is kept really clean. We did get about 6-7" of snow one night. The roads were plowed first thing next morning. Skyline Drive viewpoints and hiking are the main attractions for this park.

Beautiful time of year to visit, the leaves are changing and the colors are exquisite. The campground has plenty of activities, clean bath houses and restrooms, a small store for necessary items, a restaurant, a lodge with games and gorgeous views, and lots of trails to hike. I recommend hiking Dark Hollow Falls.

Good chance you'll get a site. You can call and check availability as you get close.
8am is when it opens.
Drop a pin in Google Maps. Or search for it in Google Maps. That and the Rangers at the gate will direct you.
Definitely check their website. You'll see what's reserved and what is taken already. But this late in the season, you shouldn't have any problems. You picked a great Campground. It's fantastic there.
They do not close the gate. There is self registration after hours.
It should fit on all of the sites I saw.
Im not sure about that specific site. Most sites look hammock friendly. Lots of trees!
It is best to come after 12:00 noon
Last I saw on Shenandoah National Park Facebook page was that they were full booked through October with reservations. They have a limited number of non reservable sites that first come first serve in person only, sounds like they usually fill those for the weekend by Thursday evening this time of year but you can follow on Facebook and they put up posts when they run out of space.
The campsites are far enough apart that there should be no confusion that it is your personal area.
You can get a campsite for $20 a night or stay at the inn for $172 a night if you hike definitely get down to Lewis Falls 😎
Fireworks are prohibited in National Parks
They do have some group sites, but I don't know if they are open now.
Not crowded yet
Near MP 51
No, but there are electrical outlets at the lodge or the welcome center which is walking distance.
I've seen darker campgrounds but Big Meadows would be considered moderately dark, I believe. The East Coast is difficult to find darkness compared to the western states.
So while there's not anything up at big Meadows itself, because it's at the top of a mountain, there are lots of trails that go down the mountainside where you can catch brook trout
Please forgive me stating the obvious. I want to give you my best answer. To camp in Big Meadows or any other campground in the park you would need to pay admission to the park, and then one night fee for your campsite. You should not have a problem if by conversion van you mean a van camper.
6pm is not too late. Once we arrived at big meadows around 8pm. Your reserved site will be available for you with your name and camping duration dates posted on your campsite.
It's open year round, except during winter weather events. The gov't shutdown may have an effect on access to some areas, even Skyline Drive. As far as I know, the Drive is still accessible.
Delaware North runs them above the campgrounds they're about $134 and night they have a shower a fireplace and air conditioning
Yes, there are 8 private shower stalls. (In same area as the laundry and small camp store for firewood). There's a small parking lot, too. The cost is 7 quarters, I believe, for about 5 minutes of hot water. You just put quarters into a box inside the shower stall and the water turns on. I think I saw a change machine, too. I recommend showering in sandals (flip flops). Each stall should have a small bench, too.
Yes, you can camp with dogs. Some trails though do not allow dogs.
U can probably find a camp sight at big meadows that time of year , its off season . If not lewis mountain isnt far and they will have spots as well. Its the off season so you should not have any trouble.
Yes, you can. Look on the G, H, I loops for "pull-through" sites that can accommodate larger vehicles.
Tent sites fit one tent comfortably, but sometimes it can be a challenge to find flat smooth ground. If it's a drive up site, some can handle more than one tent, depending on how the surrounding campers set up. There are plenty of trees for hammocks at most sites.
You can get a backcountry permit from the Ranger station and go anywhere that is not off limits like, the summit of a mountain or a popular waterfall. Permits are free
Yes. There are showers in that one shower building and behind the laundry area in the camp convenience store. The showers are 1.75 per 5 minutes and you really need shower shoes and a way to put your clothes back on with a wet floor to stand on. Change dollars to quarters at the machine outside the store.
But you might have better luck with the email form on their contacts page. They say it takes a week though. What did you need?
Honestly - Thursday, before 3 if you can swing it. Fridays can be pretty tough, and you might as well get the extra day out of it rather than leaving early enough Friday day. Also I'd plan to try one of the other campgrounds close by if Big Meadows doesn't work out.
The closest thing would probably be the Story of the Forest trail. It's not ADA compliant as far as accessibility goes but it's a nice, easy trail that would be suitable for senior citizens.
Currently full. If you don't already have a reservation, you are out of luck.
At that time of year there's usually plenty of available no worries safe travels and enjoy! Please don't rush your trip this is a beautiful beautiful area.
Definitely, it's on the top of the mountain so there's a clear 360 view for the sky
