Are tire chains recommended during winter? Can a family car drive in safely, or would you recommend a 4x4?

Daniel-yes-especially if you are planning on going to higher elevations I'd definitely recommend chains at the minimum & 4x4 if u have one-rather safe then sorry. Pack water, snacks & a couple blankets-cuz u know stuff happens. One of favorite areas in the whole USA. Have a great adventure!

Depends where you would like to go. A front wheel drive car with good tread is sufficient at this time. Rain and snow this weekend with temps forcasted in the 50s for next week. You should be fine with the family car. ☺ If you go out of the valleys, 4 wheel drive is required.

At the least I'd say studded tires or chains

Brian Johnston | Jul 16, 2018

4 wheel drive and chains would be advised.

I would recommend a 4x4 AND studs, AND chains, if you aren't used to driving in snow. Out of state drivers who are not used to winter driving are a major contributor in winter time accidents.
