Ive only been in June but the ponies really are everywhere. We were able to sit next to them and pet them, one of the babies laid down in my lap and actually fell asleep! It was the craziest thing. Highly recommend
It's hard not to see them. So you want to pick a time when you will enjoy the visit the most. Keep in mind that the park is higher than most of Virginia so the temps are often much lower. This means folks love to go in July and August when you might even still need a jacket in the evening. Normally our campgrounds open the first Friday in March but at Grayson we wait until May and have had some snow even in May. So unless you are looking for cold weather experiences wait. Mid-June is when the rhododendron bloom and fall color tends to be earlier.
