Do I need a 4wd vehicle to do the dirt trails or can I get around pretty good in a high clearance 2wd truck with all terrain tires?

2wd and care should be OK. A tow strap and shovel plus plenty of water should be in your truck

I believe it all depends on where exactly you go. I didn't encounter any trouble in my Kia Soul...but I didn't attempt to do anything that I wasn't sure she could handle.

Most trails are sand, if you are a experienced driver and don't stop you can do it

You should be OK in some places in red rock. Just don't drop into any deep gully's and not check you surroundings to get out. That's when we put ours in 4wheel drive.

No not at all

Depends. Most ways on unpaved roads are ok. BUT, there are some very soft sand areas where even a narrow tired 4x4 can get stuck , especially if loses speed and momentum. Also some uneven tight spots where you can have one wheel spinning as you go nowhere. Be careful to avoid these hazards or have a plan to get out if them.

Some of both. 4wd roads and high clearance

High clearance 2wd should be fine as long as it hasn't been raining
